The New Zealand fuzz-poppers kicked off 2011 with the release of their debut full-length album, Kudos , on Fire Records, and a brief American tour with psych-rock label mates Bardo Pond. And now, to round out the year, they've dropped a video to accompany the single, "Crazy Rulers of the World." The video debuted on Pitchfork a few weeks back and we've got the video for you here in case you missed it. We created this official video from footage shot during their D.C. show, so you've got a little bit of AON [...]
Brand new video for Surf City directed and edited by my good pal Raul Wilderness Bureau [ @raulzahir ] - give it a spin. <!-- <!-- <!--
We've always been big fans of rock music coming from New Zealand. (Check out our Lost Classics entry on the subject.) So we were thrilled to add Surf City to the list of Kiwi bands we love. The group's debut album, Kudos (Fire), came out late last year, and it was the follow-up to Surf City's [...]

There are a ton of killer shows tonight. TV On The Radio ($31 - sold out)and Vivian Girls (w/ Black Lips, $20) are both dropping albums today and playing shows to celebrate. Chris Cornell is doing a solo acoustic show (w/ William Elliot Whitmore, who is amazing) which I would fucking kill to be at. Yes, his new solo shit is atrocious but then again have you ever heard the acoustic version of "

Darlings have a new EP out! That's good news, especially for anyone who's ever listened to Yeah I Know. There are truly some puzzling things about this whole indie rock game, and one of life's biggest mysteries is how terrible, terrible Brooklyn bands keep blowing up and Darlings haven't yet. This is one of the best bands in the borough, period. New song below. Surf City, from New Zealand, are also worth checking out. Lots of fast, pop-ish guitar that's got enough drive to keep it interesting. I'd never heard of Little Racer before, but their [...]

Toronto - Another week, another series of concerts. My life is such a routine. Sharon Van Etten April 12th, Drake If you haven't been fully entranced by a Sharon Van Etten live show, then you get the opportunity to check that off your bucket list on Tuesday. The Brooklyn based singer songwriter is best seen in small intimate venues and the Drake is certainly one of those places. Her most recent album, Epic has garnered her a lot of deserved attention as it is filled with earnest songs that highlights [...]

In 2011, those familiar might think a city with a wealth of musical history and significance such as Memphis would tout an equally wealthy list of music festivals and gatherings. There are at several notables that each have broad appeal - Goner Records' annual Gonerfest , the Folk Alliance International Conference which takes place every February, and the Beale Street Music Festival every May all come to mind. But Brandon Herrington - a Memphis native & member of local band This Is Goodbye - could see that something was missing. [...]

Every year around this time I know how Cinderella felt. A combination of lack of funds and lack of time result in me missing the SXSW ball. So a big thank you to Team Clermont and Greyday Records for providing an SXSW in my living room. For those of you lucky enough to be the two companies have teamed up to present an official showcase Thursday, March 17 at Easy Tiger Patio (formerly Habana Calle 6) from 8PM to 2AM. Just don't expect to see me there as I'll be [...]

DOWNLOAD : Surf City - "Kudos" DOWNLOAD : Surf City - "Crazy Ruler of the World" Surf City first came in to existence when bored friends Davin Stoddard and Josh Kennedy met at a party in Mt Roskill in 2004. Tired of the heavy avant-garde music that was prolific at the time Stoddard and Kennedy teamed up with Josh's brother Jamie and Logan Collins to form the band. Originally called The Fibs and then Kill Surf City their fascination with fast guitar pop and [...]

It surely was.. I spent most of Sunday afternoon propping up the bar at the King's Arms in the company of bona fide legends, and some legends-to-be, at the Arch Hill vs. Muzai Records BBQ. Wallet-emptying beer prices and a main stage muddy vocal sound did not diminish the experience. A little too much daylight, perhaps, for some bands to shed whatever inhibitions they had and well and truly let fly, but for Surf City and Street Chant , it was a chance to have a last blast before SXSW. Good [...]
