Who Are You,You Are Awesome Awards (Three-way tie) Here are three albums that came out this year which I liked, from acts about whom I knew very little at the time, and still barely know anything about. Other than that I like them. Obviously. 1. Surrounded - The Nautilus Years These guys are from Sweden, and a solid review from DiS made me seek them out. They sound like Grandaddy with richer strings, fewer robots, and almost as many moments of heart-stoppage caused by sheer prettiness. There's [...]

We've made no secret of our love of all things surround here at HAD, so we were psyched to find another artist (much like The Flaming Lips) who seems to be continuing to embrace the format: Cornelius . It should probably come as no surprise that the Japanese electronic musician is a proponent of putting his music in the surround sound/video format: His recordings often make liberal use of stereophonic effect, and his live shows are an audio visual onslaught. Cornelius' first 5.1 release came in 2003. Titles (appropriately) [...]
Next to the Fleet Foxes ' debut, my favourite summer album was from This Is Ivy League . Now there's a new remix from the French Horn Rebellion ; they have turned London Bridges into a quite appealing dance track. Check it out and let me know what you think! http://www.myspace.com/thisisi vyleague http://www.myspace.com/frenchh ornrebellion [...]

It's been a while since the heyday of the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev , whose late '90s opuses ( The Soft Bulletin and Deserter's Songs , respectively) broke new ground for spaced-out Technicolor dream-pop which the rest of the music scene promptly forgot about after the Strokes . Until now. Surrounded 's tremendous The Nautilus Years sounds like nothing less than a lost Rev or Sparklehorse album from that golden era, filled with hushed vocals contrasting with big, vibrant arrangements. Take "Safe Sun Tomorrow," [...]

I've denied it , but now it's official: Albert Hammond Jr' s sophomore LP Como Te Llama will be released in the mid of June. Alright, that is basically nothing to be sad about, still I don't approve of him doing that record. Why? It means, that Albert probably'll have a tour, TV appearances and all that stuff and the next Strokes record is even farther away. Still, he's a Stroke, so go buy the new single GfC via amazon . MP3: Albert Hammond Jr - GfC ( YSI ) [...]

Surrounded is yet another wonderful musical export from Sweden. When the band is not standing in front of giant barcodes looking rather bored, they're making lush atmospheric rock music and that is anything but boring. On The Nautical Years , Surrounded's second album, they have proven themselves to be highly skilled in creating soaring epics full of flourishing instrumentation. The first single on the album is the breathtaking "Safe Tomorrow Sun", which encapsulates everything there is to like about the band. The instrumentation is spectacular featuring spirited guitar and violin parts over a [...]

Stellar Swedish supergroup seeks select society of citizens for synergetic soaking of sound. Surrounded 's single "Safe Tomorrow Sun" sits sadly separate from the top 50 songs of 2007, snubbed similarly to those in yesterday's post. Still, some stock may be salvaged. All alliteration aside, this subtle yet potent band from across the pond deserved more press this year. This record boasts some epic progressions, set just slow enough to sear into your cranium with deliberate weight. It's spacey and low-fi with sampled and manipulated strings, bombastic beats and smart basslines. Leave it to the foreigners to [...]

Surrounded are Swedish and fall somewhere between Idaho , MBV , Mercury Rev and Sparklehorse . The Nautilus Years is a record submerged in colourful soundscapes with a tone that implies post-melancholy, - the place where direction begins to be found. The music is complimented by humble, but direct and clear vocals. Safe Tomorrow Sun is a picturesque song that moves steadily and has a reassuring chorus. Paper Tangerine Crush evokes the title as the song flows with a half-hearted optimism. The Oceanographer [...]

[MP3] Jeremy - Make Love Not War Tenderhooks Frá Knoxville kemur þessi fína drullusveitarokksveit með hið gáfulega og grípanda lag "Kidstuff". Lagið er af þeirra fyrstu plötu og nefnist hún [...]

What's in a name? In the case of Sweden's Surrounded, it also describes their sound, an intense, brooding, and surprisingly simple brand of indie rock that surrounds and fills and envelopes. The second LP The Nautilus Years , is out in June in the US and is already available in Europe. www.onelittleindian-us.com www.surrounded.se
Surrounded's new release on One Little Indian is called The Nautilus Years and is due out on June 5th. Normally I wouldn't write about well produced atmospheric rock like this. However it's hard to pass this kind of stuff up when it appears in your inbox all wrapped and bowed and ready to post. Buy it here . Safe Tomorrow Sun Bonus: On Top Of the World (Remix) ------------- [...]
Sweden's musical collective The Gray Brigade have a new song for you. Not as catchy as Feel Like Crying, but very enjoyable anyway. The Gray Brigade - Please (MP3) Indie For Bunnies has collected Best-Of-2006-lists from various blogs (including mine), and has now compiled the overall top-100-albums of last year. Very interesting choices there. Take a look for yourself [...]
