Wavelength announces lineup for 12th anniversary festivities

Wavelength announces lineup for 12th anniversary festivities Facebook Nestled amidst some concert announcements in a post last week were a couple of odd one-offs for No Joy and PS I Love You which were not part of any announced tour or timely promotional cycle. It didn't occur to me to ask why, but just a little bit of thought would have made the answer obvious - Wavelength . The dates of their shows corresponded to the four-day weekend of the Toronto music series' twelfth anniversary festival, and though neither of those acts is properly local - they [...]

Suuns: December 10, 2011 Webster Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Suuns: December 10, 2011 Webster Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song [photo courtesy of Maryanne Ventrice and Impose Magazine ] When acidjack recorded Suuns in January at Rock Shop , he noted the versatility of the band and the "controlled intensity" that the band brings to each song. By December, when I recorded their show at Webster Hall opening for The Antlers , Sunns seem to have perfected that approach. In one of the best-received opening sets we've seen in quite some time, Suuns began with the new 123 b-side "Red Song" (streaming below), which presaged the compelling [...]

Seven Great Records of 2011

Seven Great Records of 2011 Started thinking about this a few weeks ago and I realised it's been a really strong year for new releases – I could've named twenty albums very easily. On top of that I've recently picked up on a couple of records from this year in the last couple of weeks – the Wilco and Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat - ones both of which I'm pretty sure would've been on this list if I knew them a little better... So … Seven Great Records of 2011 Bad As Me – Tom Waits [...]

Seven Great Gigs of 2011

Seven Great Gigs of 2011 I'm a little apprehensive about writing this post about best gigs of the year, partly because I think I've seen less this year than many others but mainly because I seem to know a few people who seem to go to a mindboggling number of gigs. I know of a couple of people who are nearly into three figures for the year. Think about it, pretty much two gigs a week… {prostrates himself on the floor} But, anyhoo, for what's its worth here are seven cracking live experiences from this year. In no particular order… [...]

[Best of 2011] Rhys' List

[Best of 2011] Rhys' List Tweet vaso link I don't really feel like 2011 has been one of those years where one album or artist has just dominated indie music press coverage like we've seen in the past couple of years. We've had nothing like 2010-style Kanye, no world conquering magnum-opus like Merriweather Post Pavillion, no truly incendiary debut like Myths of the Near Future. Let's be honest, even GaGa had quiet one compared to 2010, meat dress and "Judas" aside. [...]

Why Suuns are the Most Important Band of 2011.

Suuns "Red Song"
It's that time of year when lists clog up the wireless web and quivering wrecks tremble into office appraisals. Thus having provided a highlight of a certain festival we've harped on about incessantly ever since it came to a dramatic close with Panda Bear and with Zeroes QC a staple of our Records of 2011 rundown , we examine just how and why Suuns became the MIB ('Most Important Band') of the year... When someone mentioned the band Suuns to you in 2010, there was probably only a [...]

Suuns Drop New EP

Suuns Drop New EP Given our ecstatic love for SUUNS first full length Zeroes QC , we have to say expectations for their next effort were running painfully high. Luckily for us, the band must have anticipated the potential for backlash, as their new 12" EP Bambi/Red Song (cover above) is nothing but totally killer new material. SUUNS at Shea Stadium from the HAD Archive Comprised of only two [...]

Dots & Dashes' Records of 2011.

Every casual browser of this here internet loves a list, particularly around this dishearteningly dark and ubiquitously dank time of year. Whether it be a page documenting childlike greed winking and nudging at material gain beneath the tawdrily-lit pine or the explicit illumination of what it was that made whichever year draws to an anticlimactic close shine and brighten the gloomiest bowels of forgotten memory, the pipes, wires and cabling of the web are currently clogged with Lisztomania. Not that referring to Ken Russell's full-length; nor to Rick Wakeman's stodgy soundtracking; nor to Phoenix' glowing estival peep but instead to [...]

LE GUESS WHO? FESTIVAL 2011 REPORT

LE GUESS WHO? FESTIVAL 2011 REPORT If I had a chance to put up a festival, it would probably look something like Utrecht's Le Guess Who? . Usually, seeing a festival means running from show to show and getting lost between a couple of huge (outdoor) stages. Here, you get to enjoy the artist's performance in some really cool indoor venues. Add a kickass line-up, a beautiful small town and a great atmosphere and you get a charming festival definitely worth visiting. SATURDAY Fool's Gold were the first band I saw on the festival [...]

Suuns

Suuns Suuns - Red Song I opened up at the Bricks last night with the b-side to this lil' EP and truth be told - it didn't go over very well, to say the least, with all the out of towner skate peeps (who, predictably, I guess, don't seem to share the same enthusiasm for the hypnotic, throbbing drone of low end coupled with weirdo, minimal instrumental effects and haunting vocals as I do). Who'd have thunk it? Seems like some people still need a lesson or two in "things don't [...]

YOU GOTTA SEE THIS: "Red Song" by Suuns

Suuns "Red Song"
I'll be honest: the video for Suuns' "Red Song" creeped me out a bit. But in a good way.

mp3 | SUUNS • bambi

mp3 | SUUNS • bambi Off the new Suuns EP comes the title track "Bambi" . The song shows a more beat-loaden side of the Canadians, but still it's Ben Schemie's reverb-drenched mumbling melt that dominates their sound. "Bambi" is hypnotically engaging and makes every Suuns addict look forward to a second record. The band is going to start recording in the next weeks! The 12″ Bambi b/w Red Song is out on Secretly Canadian . You can purchase the vinyl from SC Distribution . [...]

Festival Frolics: Saturday, Le Guess Who? 2011.

Festival Frolics: Saturday, Le Guess Who? 2011. Saturday, day three of Le Guess Who? provides probably its most diverse as we run from A (Winged Victory For The Sullen) to Z(omby). Returning to Ekko for the tearjerkingly stunning A Winged Victory For The Sullen , Adam Wiltzie and Dustin O'Halloran exhume "seven songs about dead people and broken hearts." A tripartite Amsterdam ensemble occupy stage-centre, the impetus on the neoclassical nature of the duo's lavish compositional mastery. We soon sit. Not in protest, but in order that we may fully revel in understated grandeur, in deferential appreciation. For every [...]

Generals have fought for spies like you

Generals have fought for spies like you Dashed off to Thekla the other night, in the distinguished company of habitual gig-buddy Coleser, ostensibly to see Canadian rock icons theBesnardLakes, but in reality much more excited by the prospect of seeing fellow Canucs, the magnificent Suuns. In the end, it really was a dash from the car park to stage side as we heard promising sounds eddying from the famous old boat, and just about made it on time. I love Suuns; and I may as well say now that Zeroes QC may well be my favourite record of the year. They were great [...]

MM Shorts 42: New Suuns Video

Suuns "Red Song"
Suuns have shared a new video for Red Song , one of the tracks on their new 123 out this week on Secretly Canadian. The video is layered with images from found sources, which pull together for an eerie pastiche reminiscent of Ringu. a Follow @madmackerel
