I've never been totally won over by Carey Mercer. I'm not a big fan of Frog Eyes , and his songs were my third least favourite part about Swan Lake (behind the band name and the production style on Beast Moans ). His latest album as Blackout Beach intrigues me, however. First off, it's got an amazing title: Fuck Death . And then there's the single, "Beautiful Burning Desire," which has some appealingly weird-ass atmospheric synths. It's a good track, although I've got to admit that my favourite parts are [...]
Blackout Beach is the unsettling solo side project of Frog Eyes / Swan Lake member Carey Mercer; you might remember the two tracks we posted from his last Blackout Beach album, 20082s Skin Of Evil . Mercer's got another Blackout Beach album coming out soon, and he's named it Fuck Death after a Leon Golub painting. In a press release, Mercer claims that the album is his "attempt to make something about Beauty and War." He recorded the album himself, using three synths, two drum-machines, and a guitar amp, [...]

Sometimes it seems like Spencer Krug is competing with Nick Thorburn (of Islands and The Unicorns) to see who can start the most side projects. At least that would provide some explanation for their respectively astronomical outputs under so many different names. But the truth is that Krug just loves making and playing music. That much is obvious after Thursday night's Moonface show at DC's Black Cat Backstage. In the battle between Nicky Diamond and The One Man Wolf Pack, I root for Krug. And that's even taking Michael Cera on bass into consideration. [...]

One thing we know for sure, Spencer Krug hates down time. Since his debut release in 2002 with Frog Eyes, Krug has released 15 full length albums and 5 EP's under 6 different monikers ( Fifths of Seven , Sunset Rubdown , Frog Eyes , Moonface , Swan Lake , and Wolf Parade ). His latest album will come from his Moonface side. Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped does actually have a story behind the title. Krug explained in a press release that originally he had intended to write an [...]
MP3 Coming from Spencer Krug himself, a Canadian singer-songwriter known for his work in numerous bands I enjoy, a track from his new Moonface project. The solo effort will be seeing a full-length debut on Jagjaguwar on August 8th . "The Way You Wish You Could Live In The Storm," is a new Moonface song, but we're only hearing it because it was cut from the forthcoming album. According to a block of text posted with the song, it's "an angry duck that didn't get along with the other songs on [...]

Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped will see daylight shortly. Visit Moonface at his official site. MP3: Moonface - The Way You Wish You Could Live In The Storm

Matt Lowell - Swan Lake Released back in March (and totally missed by me) is Matt Lowell's new EP, Swan Lake. Swan Lake is co-written with Dead Oceans Recording artist John Vanderslice and produced by Joel Hamilton (Black Keys, Matisyahu, Sparklehorse). In addition to Vanderslice and Hamilton, Minna Choi the arranger of the indie Magik*Magik Orchestra was added to create orchestrations and complex arrangements that are completely gorgeous and lush. Its a great EP that show's off the Berklee grad's solid songwriting and matured musicianship all in one nice little package especially for the free [...]
Tweet Allow me to present a simple yardstick to judge how awesome a song is. If it makes me want to dance to it while sober? Hot damn, you got yourself a winner. Which brings me seamlessly - seamlessly! - to Young Montana?, a.k.a. Jon Pritchard. Jon is from Coventry (Editor's note - This is a town in England about mid-way between Manchester and London) . Stateside readers may not be familiar with the phrase "sent to Coventry", [...]

In music, there are the good artists who are creative and make great music that people can really enjoy. Then there are the brilliant artists who are amazing, talented and people fall in love with. Matt Lowell is brilliant. (Apologies for the propaganda I am about to spew at you) Swan Lake is a well formed EP by Matt Lowell a New York based artist and he is apparently quite well known. Graduating from Berklee College of Music, releasing other EP's, touring, performing- he has really gotten around. [...]

So I got to see Spencer Krug live on Friday night in an apartment in Brooklyn along with 60 or so fans as obsessed with him as me, close enough to experience such a wonderfully brilliant musician up close, close enough to speak to him and offer him a drink, close enough to thank him for all his great music for the past seven years (well, I simply said "Thank you" and he thanked me sheepishly for coming), and close enough to an amazing experience I won't soon forget. Spencer of course is the creative force behind Sunset Rubdown, simply [...]

While throwing back a few beers and waiting for the Mogwai show to start, I had the pleasure of meeting the master blogger of this wonderful music web page [Editor's note: That's me]. It came up in conversation that I should write a post (although I'm not clear on if it was offered, or I just sort of invited myself), so I set about finding something worthwhile to share. Back in 2006, Dan Bejar of Destroyer, Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes, and Spencer Krug of Sunset Rubdown and Wolf Parade came together and formed the band <a target="_blank" [...]

Today marks the release of Matt Lowell's Swan Lake EP - his third EP. Click image to download full album Sounds like: The New Pornographers, Swan Lake, Frog Eyes "Destroyer - Bay of Pigs (Detail)" What's so good? Dan Bejar has been a musical renaissance man for sometime now. Adding new dimensions to The New Pornographers, his solo work as Destroyer, or performing with his girlfriend Sydney Vermont as Hello, Blue Roses all turn out some amazing sounds. His latest album as Destroyer is called Kaputt , and will be released [...]

The following blog-post is technically the sort of cheat I wouldn't normally be caught dead doing - most of it was published on my tumblr earlier today. But what can I say? The country's going to fuck, standards are slipping everywhere. It's about spiders. To slightly ease the guilt of reposting something, I'm throwing in two spider-related songs for free and have changed the text a bit. I'm a big fan of spiders, and this is a great time of year to see them in action. With the cooler [...]
