Photography by emmajeanjumpingbean When you stick 3 weirdos in a room together, ask them to make a record, I'm pretty sure it's impossible to know what to expect. Individually, you may have a pretty good idea (though the chance of surprising you is still there, of course), but all three? Will they be inspired to out-weird each other? Will they calm each other down (like baby & I do to each other)? Will they ignore each other and each do their own thing? Such were [...]
Spanish Gold, 2044 - Swan Lake Settle On Your Skin - Swan Lake Upon the first listen, Enemy Mine , the new album by indie super group Swan Lake sounds exactly how I expected it would. There are no unexpected turns here, no change ups. Of course, that isn't really a bad thing. Much like Beast Moans , Swan Lake's new effort is full of indecipherable, cryptic lyrics, bizarre arrangements, and three very distinct voices doing their best to support each other. Personally I [...]

Last time Wolf Parade side project Handsome Furs released an album, I was less than kind towards it. Keep in mind that this was after mega-great records by Wolf Parade and Spencer Krug's side project Sunset Rubdown. So when Wolf Parade's other principal singer/songwriter Dan Boeckner made the album "Plague Park" with his then-fiancee Alexei Perry, I naturally expected good things to come from it. Maybe my hopes were up far too high, but I like to think that in the 2 years that have passed the hype has died down a bit and I can reasonably review their sophmore [...]

Yet another side project for indie-rock god Spencer Krug A great little interview with Spencer Krug was recently posted over at Stereogum . In the post, Krug talks about his upcoming Swan Lake record Enemy Mine and how much he enjoys song-writing with his "old friends". What caught my attention the most in this interview, however, was when Krug told of his future projects. Apparently, after the release of Sunset Rubdown's still-untitled fourth LP slated for late summer, Krug plans to finish an ongoing project (two years and counting) [...]
:: Paul McCartney has been banging a new chick lately. And they want to take it to the next level . That's right, a prenup. :: Looks like even the Grammy Awards are drinking the Radiohead Kool-Aid these days. And I'm talking big time. Not only is there and Album of the Year nomination and ad campaign with Thom Yorke's mug (old news on both counts), but the band is planning to play the ceremony . :: Want an insight into fame from someone in the music industry, but [...]

Director Ray Tintori, who produced psychedelic other-worldly landscapes for MGMT , got an even bigger budget for the Killers' new clip and he spent it all on costumes. They are crazy costumes, though. At the center of the Bowie-esque tale of alien abduction is Brandon Flowers in a bright red bodysuit with red football pads and plumage ( natch ). He's the most subtly outfitted of all the humans and dancers attending the feast on skull tower.

Swan Lake - A Venue Called Rubella MySpace

Canadian Indie Rock Supergroup Swan Lake returns for a sophomore effort in 2009! All indications are that Enemy Mine , the followup to the band's majestic and weird Beast Moans (2006), will be in the hands of fans on March 24th. Neither the band or it's label, Jagjaguwar , will be offering tracks from Enemy Mine to the media until late February - presumably in an effort to keep a lid on the thing and to [...]

Swan Lake is not the ballet troupe, instead it's a troupe made up of Dan Bejar of Destroyer, Spencer Krug of Sunset Rubdown/Wolf Parade and Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes and Blackout Beach. In other words, a band worth checking out. Their last record, Beast Moans , wasn't as brilliant as a Destroyer, New Pornos, or Wolf Parade record, but a few tracks were decent enough to show that this one, Enemy Mine , could be amazing. According to the press release: "While their debut album was a beautifully-weaved mash-up of their disparate song-writing styles, often [...]

Finally, news about Swan Lake's second LP Thanks to Wolf Parade's fansite for the heads up , it appears Swan Lake's sophomore effort will be entitled Enemy Mine. There's no official date on the release, but rumor has it the album will drop March 24, 2009 through Jagjaguwar Records . Interestingly, the courtroom cover art was purchased by Carey Mercer for a mere C$25 from an antique store in Penticton, B.C. The unofficial track listing looks like this: 1. Spanish Gold, 2044 2. Paper [...]

Oh yes. 2009 is already shaping up rather nicely: Swan Lake 's follow-up to 2006's Beast Moans is now officially on the docket from Jagjaguwar . Tracklist: Spanish Gold, 2044 Paper Lace Heartswarm Settle on Your Skin Ballad of a Swan Lake, Or, Daniel's Song Peace Spider A Hand at [...]

Blackout Beach [ Official Site ] is the solo nom de guerre of Carey Mercer (from Frog Eyes and Swan Lake ), and Skin of Evil is his second full-length, and it tells the story of "Donna" and each of her lovers (past & present) say their peace in song. Composed, played and recorded entirely by Mercer alone, these songs revel in the dark side of the heady proto-punk Cleveland axis (e.g. Peter Laughner , David Thomas ) with a minimal, textural [...]
