Silver Swans were recently brought to my attention through a comparison to Camera Obscura . The vocals have that same innocent and breathy quality, but these tracks are a bit more elusive and melancholy. They are almost too easy to love, but the appeal is undeniable as they manage to stay sweet without being too saccharine. Look forward to their album Forever , which is to be released late this year. From the late 1960s through the early '70s, Mickey Newbury released a string of classic albums that helped to redefine the definitions of/blur the boundaries between country, folk, and the burgeoning singer/songwriter movement. The word "seminal" gets thrown around pretty loosely these days, but to give you an idea of Newbury's importance in the aforementioned context, both Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark made their initial move to Nashville because their fellow Texan Newbury was there, and Kris Kristofferson, another Lone Star export to Music City, once said "I learned more about songwriting from Mickey than I did any other [...]

Tape Roc - Say No More God Sense - Call Swan Firearm Loving this album, sounds like that dope sountrack that comes along every once in a while, that is so fresh, you keep it on repeat constantly, like Samurai Champloo or Ghost Dog. Great work by Digi Crates. Beats & Bullets : Soundtrack To A Shootout is a project designed as an instrumental sound score to a shootout cinema/street scene. Features all-star Digi Crates Records producers Kyo Itachi (France), King AL (Sweden), Miedlev [...]

In music, there are the good artists who are creative and make great music that people can really enjoy. Then there are the brilliant artists who are amazing, talented and people fall in love with. Matt Lowell is brilliant. (Apologies for the propaganda I am about to spew at you) Swan Lake is a well formed EP by Matt Lowell a New York based artist and he is apparently quite well known. Graduating from Berklee College of Music, releasing other EP's, touring, performing- he has really gotten around. [...]
Silver Swans from San Francisco make their New York debutAnn Yu (of LoveLikeFire) and DJ producer Jon Waters have been tinkering with sounds that sound like it could have been recorded while sleeping. After having performed their songs for the sunshine kids in San Francisco, they're coming over to New York to warm some hearts.May 22nd @ The Rock Shop in Brooklyn, New York (part of New York City

Pic: Kari Altmann Phidias - Cygnus Astratus ( buy ) Out on Freund Der Familie is this amazing effort by new producer Phidias. A track 8 minutes long that rolls through each moment oozing darkness from it's restrained drum beats, simply stunning stuff. The b-side to Black Secret also features a track by Freund Der Familie reworked by Redshape . 7 Citizens - Watson's Party Seven [...]
"Windshield Wipers," the first single off of The Black Swans forthcoming Misra Release, Don't Blame the Stars has this nice old-timey Wilco feel to it, like something Jeff Tweedy would have written back in his boozier and bluesier days on an album like A.M. or Being There. Jerry DeCicca's voice, while filled with sadness and regret, still retains a nice, deep smoothness to it. While the wandering violin melody adds the country flavor every good and downtrodden, barroom lament needs. Damn if I don't want a shot, a High-Life and a good cry myself. [...]

Anyone who is an avid sports fan is a secret math nerd at heart. Every sport is filled with more stats than any human needs to know, often times made up just to fit the criteria at hand (Albert Pujols has the most home runs on the 13th day of any month in MLB history*). Algorithms and pie charts are usually involved, and to this day no human can explain the BCS Bowl system, which needs a computer to calculate the results. And that's why we need people like Silk Flowers' Ethan Swan to do ...
I would be lying if I said that the new track "Mother of Pearl" by Silver Swans didn't sound a little similar to Camera Obscura's vibe of indie pop. But this new demo track from their forthcoming album Forever is absolutely full of sweet delicious pop goodness. Starting off with a thumping bass then later [...]
Hey, look at the menu bar kids! I created a forum where Swan Fungus readers can congregate and talk about all things...well, you can talk about anything, I guess. I modeled it after the Premiere Rock Forum and even though I'm wildly unsuccessful by comparison and generate maybe 1% of that website's traffic I figured it was [...]

Editor's note: As we have hoes/pros in different area codes, we decided to send some of our friends out into the field to take in some non-Detroit shows. Here's the first, from our friends out in San Francisco. Popscene SF held a night featuring two female driven new wavey electro groups, The Hundred in the Hands and Silver Swans . Silver Swans opened with their own brand of ethereal synth-pop. Frontwoman Ann Yu (also singer of LoveLikeFire) and Producer Jon Waters were joined on stage with a backing band that helped flesh [...]
This is what I imagine the home movies of David Lynch's formative years to be like. California Baby captures summer days on Quaaludes, ill-fated youthful excursions, intergalactic gang signs and futuristic auto shows, all under the watchful eye of strangely benevolent alien lifeform. What did you do on your vacation? Cliffie Swan . The name is new, but perhaps you remember them as Lights, whose two prior releases cast a vaguely eerie pall over the good vibrations of psychedelic summers past. Along with the new name comes the trio's second [...]

Michael Gira and the feel good nice weather folks of Swans just announced a fairly thick east coast run of dates around their All Tomorrows Parties performance this fall. Feeling down and need a pick me up? Feel "I Am the Sun" and "A Screw" live, get lifted, and praise be to God. Yah mo b at either the Chicago, Nashville, or Lexington show. A little treat for you for today's Moving Monday feature - a live performance by noisy rockers Pulled Apart From Horses , filmed for the Topman CTRL MX show a couple months back. This track, 'High Five, Swan Dive, Nose Dive', didn't make the broadcast but luckily it has not been lost altogether.

The second night of Kelp 17 happened on May 6th at the Dom Polski. It was one of the exciting nights there. Playing were: The Acorn Andy Swan Recoilers Everyone was excited the Acorn's set. Why? They played mostly from the first album "The Pink Ghosts". I [...]

While throwing back a few beers and waiting for the Mogwai show to start, I had the pleasure of meeting the master blogger of this wonderful music web page [Editor's note: That's me]. It came up in conversation that I should write a post (although I'm not clear on if it was offered, or I just sort of invited myself), so I set about finding something worthwhile to share. Back in 2006, Dan Bejar of Destroyer, Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes, and Spencer Krug of Sunset Rubdown and Wolf Parade came together and formed the band <a target="_blank" [...]

The Black Swans will be heading to the East Coast to bring to the stage new songs from the band's outstanding psych-folk full length 'Don't Blame The Stars' along with back catalog favorites. American Songwriter is featuring the premiere of The Black Swans' new video for the album's title track "Don't Blame The Stars." Under the direction of Jake Housh, the song and Jerry's voice take on a beautiful visual as he sings, "Don't blame the stars for what we can fix with our hands."

Save a slow dance for Silver Swans at Thursday's Popscene, sharing the bill with Brooklyn's The Hundred in the Hands. Silver Swans' dark, dream-pop lullabies are the project of DJ producer Jon Waters and songwriter Ann Yu. The duo likes to record late night and it's heard in the ethereal bedroom sound of the " Secrets " EP. Together they marry synth and low-fi with Portishead-style distorted female [...]
