Based on "Brugada", the lead track from their forthcoming third album Crown and Treaty (April 17 UK), London's '09 Mercury Prize recipients Sweet Billy Pilgrim appear to be dramatically ramping up the heady home-grown folk-tronica and sublime chamber pop of their earlier works for a larger stylistic canvas and bolder musical pallet. An adventurous prog/pop excursion -- check out the extended instrumental break half-way through -- "Brugada" nimbly soars, dips and dives from jangly folk ode to dense, harmony-rich workout of cinematic scope. Read part 1 here Read part 2 here Feeling re-energised by my early night and a day off the grog I'm ready to throw myself into the Sunday fold with new-found gusto. I decide I must see as many bands as possible today to make up for my poor show yesterday. So after going to the Film & Music tent for the Q+A with the cast of The Inbetweeners (which suffers from microphone problems, stifling heat, and the fact that Tom bloody Jones can be heard in the [...]

"We Just Did What Happened and No One Came" de 2005 e "Twice Born Men", de 2009, um disco [...]
I sometimes wonder when Ben Eshmade lets his penguin workers sleep. For those unfamiliar with Ben and his feathered team, they are behind all the Arctic Circle concerts in London. The Daylight Music sessions in the Union Chapel. The forthcoming Bubbly Blue and Green festival in Kings Place. The Arctic Circle That Fuzzy Feeling compilations. [...]

Mr abb is right, this has been tougher than usual. I'm pleased we worked it out and even more pleased we've hit on a top four after extended negotiations more convoluted than the US healthcare wrangles and Copenhagen put together. Finally we can walk out to the armoured car in our blue UN flak jackets, shake hands, and pronounce the Big Four. A roadmap to tinnitus, essentially. But before that, my other top records, following angrybonbon's tremendous ten... 1 - Sweet Billy Pilgrim - Twice Born Men I promised a [...]

The Explorer's Club is new and very interesting subscription-based mp3-club made as a collaboration between Eardrums' favourite LOAF recordings (home of great bands like Dark Captain Light Captain , Seeland, Vincent Oliver and others), and Arctic Circle , who arranges concerts in London (Efterklang at the Barbican, Notwist at the Union Chapel, etc). For one year, starting in January, the new club will release new digital singles once a month from 30 artists from all over the world. The singles will include two or three exclusive [...]
"An unassuming thing of minor beauty" says The Wire of Twice Born Men , the remarkably inventive sophomore album from acclaimed Brit "folk-tronic" trio Sweet Billy Martin . Steeped in quiet drama and bathed in long, dark shadows of mood and melancholy, the music of SBM has been compared to Radiohead, The Blue Nile, Elbow, Damian Rice and even Coldplay in that peculiar, distinctively British genre of serious-minded, intelligent and challenging art/pop. The band was recently selected as a finalist for the 2009 U.K. Mercury Prize in the U.K. -- and naturally we thought it was [...]

The nominees for the U.K.'s Mercury Music Prize were announced this week, and if about half the shortlisted artists aren't already familiar to Los Angeles audiences, more will be soon. In fact, the latest (and greatest, if you believe NME's breathless accounts) synth-pop sensation, La Roux , play to a sold-out Troubadour tonight, with four other familiar faces on the way soon. The Mercury Prize is given by the British Phonographic Industry and the British Association of Record Dealers for the best album of the past year. Primal Scream, Portishead, Pulp, Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys have [...]

Beggars Since I went to the trouble last week of making my generally meaningless predictions for the 2009 Mercury Prize nominees, it only makes sense that I take a look at the actual shortlist - announced this morning - and compare. And the first thing that I find is that the UK's bookies, who ostensibly do this sort of thing for living, don't have any more clue than I do. Go figure. Anyways, the nominees for this year are as follows: Bat For Lashes / [...]

The shortlist for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize for best British or Irish album of the last 12 months has been announced today. The nominees are: Bat For Lashes 'Two Suns' Bat For Lashes, aka Natasha Khan, was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2007 for her debut album 'Fur And Gold' – her second nomination is for its follow-up, 'Two Suns'. Influenced by Bjork and Steve Reich, ex-teacher Khan is known for her hippyish image and spectacular costumes when playing live. Listen at: Myspace.com/batforlashes [...]
The Mercury Prize is an annual award for the "best British album," and unlike the Teen Choice Awards where surfboards are given as trophies, winning it is actually a pretty big deal. So is the fact that £20,000 is given to the winner. Today, nominations for the 2009 Mercury Prize were announced and among the candidates are Bat for Lashes, Florence and the Machine, Friendly Fires, Glasvegas and Kasabian. Read all about it at mercuryprize.com .

The nominations for the 2009 Barclaycard Mercury Prize - for the best album from the United Kingdom and Ireland - were announced today, July 21, at a special ceremony in London by BBC 6music radio host Lauren Laverne. Receiving a Mercury Prize nomination (and/or winning it) generally leads to increased album sales and increased celebrity profile for a band. Manchester band Elbow received the honor in 2008. Here are the 12 nominees for this year's Mercury Prize : Florence and the Machine – Lungs [...]

Bat For Lashes' Two Suns , Florence & The Machine's Lungs , and the self-titled debuts from Glasvegas and La Roux are among the nominees for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize, awarded annually to the best album from the United Kingdom or Ireland. While there are some glaring omissions as always (um, Micachu????? ), digging around for videos by the nominees revealed a couple of new-to-me acts-the hip-hop artist Speech Debelle, the experimental jazz outfit Led Bib-who proved intriguing on first listen. (Oddsmakers currently have Lungs as the favorite .) The nominees, and representative videos, [...]
