I waited till 2011 to finalize my albums list - all my lists - partially due to laziness, being busy, the holidays... but mainly because I'm not sure what the hurry is. I don't do this for the web traffic (clearly), so I gave myself a little more time to decide than usual. (And as long as this goes up before the Village Voice' s Pazz n' Jop, I don't feel delinquent.) So here's my list, the top five or so have been a lock for almost half a year, but the rest were in flux right till I [...]

A year end albums list is kind of a strange thing, especially when it's one person compiling it. Since this blog is a committe of one, it can become quite capricious. In all likelyhood I wrote about some records this past year that I was overtly enthusiastic about at the time. Now the end of the year rolls around and some of those records are not on the list. "What gives?" you might ask. It's hard to remember which label flew me to Tahiti and which one comp'd my CMJ this year, so I may have forgotten to include a [...]

So, the scuzz pop/surf/grunge outfit know as Night Manager have a brand new 73 coming out shortly via Fire Talk Records . Here is the A side, which to me sounds like the start of summer. Listen. Downloadable: Pizza Pasta (mp3) The 73 looks something like this: Preorder the Pizza Pasta 73 @ firetalk.bigcartel.com . For your streaming pleasure, here is the band's free EP entitled /////// . As I was cleaning my inbox I noticed the good folks over at Brooklyn label Blackburn Recordings sent some track from Sweet Bulbs a few months ago. I was quickly captured by the band's brand of noisy pop rock. The label has taken care of the s/t release and can be picked up here . Listen to my favorite track off the LP below and marvel at the insane cover art above. High [...]

I don't mean to be all "Las Robertas all the time," but this is THE show to be at this Saturday night. This new group called the Pita Gods have started putting together shows, and this is a helluva show to start off with. It's a who's who of upcoming Brooklyn talent (seriously, Sweet Bulbs, Sunny Ali & The Kid, and Telenovelas are three bands that are going to be in the next crop of Brooklyn exports, in a big way, even if that way is a bit overhyped) plus a really, really sweet out of town band. And if [...]

Arches - This Isn't A Good Night For Walking It's been a while since we heard anything about Brooklyn indie rockers Grizzly Bear. After a bit of searching I found Arches out of Philadelphia to fill that void - that would be Tommy, Jules, Cristian and Kevin. The kids just wrapped up a show in [...]

I love me some post-punk. Thus I stumbled upon Sweet Bulbs, a lo-fi fuzzed out band from New York City. And not the Ian Curtis post-punk. These guys add pop induced flavor instead of the darkness that usually accompanies post-punkers. Heavy on the lo-fi, these cats steer away from ordinary by distorting guitars and just [...]

Sometimes I'll have mp32s laying around on my computer that I have no idea where they came from. The computer will be playing on shuffle and something will come up that I don't recognize it. Then I'll be gobsmacked at how good it is, and wonder where the hell I got it. That happened more than a couple times with Sweet Bulbs . I had a couple songs that I probably downloaded either from Skatterbrain or Gorilla vs Bear. While I was downloading, one of my kids screamed about something and I promptly forgot to [...]

On Friday night, you will have the chance to checkout the band that put out Black Hole , one of our favorite albums of last year . The band is called Young Adults . They hail from Allston, Mass. They look something like this: Young Adults are playing Death by Audio along with Shark? and Slow Animal this Friday evening. It is so worth trekking out to South 2nd Street for this one. I went and compiled some [...]

Oh man, Shea Stadium's gonna be a partay tonight. New York's concert venues are pretty packed to the gills with fun things to do tonight, but as far as Friday nights are concerned, this show is where it's at. First of all, if you haven't been digging on Weed Hounds lately, you should probably give them a listen-over. They're definitely for fans of Pains of Being Pure at Heart mixed with some way scuzzier production and a little more edge. Sweet Bulbs go one shade darker on that lo-fi twee spectrum. Maybe two shades darker. Regal [...]

The beauty of a free show is the "can't lose" proposition. Aside from the length of time you choose to invest, the no-cost aspect allows you to engage and judge, free from the perception that artist x needs to provide you with entertainment equivalent to, or greater than, the cost of the ticket you purchased. Brooklyn band Sweet Bulbs was why I had shown up for a free show at Bruar Falls. Having only read the bits of buzz here and there, and heard the handful songs that have made their way onto the internet, I wasn't exactly [...]
Throughout this year's CMJ, NYC bloggers, indie labels, and other determined do-it-yourselfers curated countless showcases at spaces of all types, with unofficial showcases much like the "counter-SXSW" events that happen in Austin every spring. This was all in addition to the official CMJ music marathon's panels and showcases - an institution within the music industry since inception in 1980. The result? A win-win situation for all: if you had a badge, CMJ ruled. If you didn't have a badge, CMJ ruled. For me, this year's highlights included both official showcases and unofficial DIY shows, [...]

Personally, I like to spend my Saturday Halloween nights at house parties with friends, not riding any trains where people in scary masks with fake weapons give me anxiety attacks. BUT, this show almost, ALMOST makes me reconsider. And I really hate riding the subway with people in scary masks holding fake weapons. All five of these bands fun, exciting, palatable to most listeners' ears, and will put on a raging Halloween party. These bands are all so straight-up enjoyable fun, that I bet you could even drag you non-music-loving friends along and they'd have a good time. Plus, who [...]
A Halloween party thrown by the Pelly twins (New York music blog girls and an indie rock radio institution) in cahoots with venerable all ages honcho Todd P. is happening on Mischief Night, October 30, in Brooklyn. The lineup includes DOM, Smith Westerns, Yellow Fever, Total Slacker and Sweet Bulbs. Details: DOM Smith Westerns Yellow [...]

Friday, September 10, 2010 Today's Quick Mention: My plan is to hang out on the couch and watch double digit football games all weekend, but if I were to get inspired to venture outside I'd totally hit up Club Deville tonight for Lower Dens and the Mohawk tomorrow for the Wild Frontier Fest. See Showlist Austin for more details. Let's bring this silly week to a close. Enjoy. : Sweet Bulbs - Kissing Clouds : At least one post a [...]
