Described by one critic as "Paul Simon's take on The Smiths", Oxford-based Jonquil deliver their third collection of percolating, Brit alt/pop with Point of Go (February 21). Taking a cue from the danceable New Romantic period of the 80's while adding Afro-pop guitar lines and a vibrant Vampire Weekend rhythm mindset, Jonquil sums up the ten new songs as "far more poppy and accessible" than earlier works. While the dense layers of skittering rhythms and careening production jumble that defined 2010's One Hundred Suns remain intact -- what we saw [...]
And now for not long awaited/demanded second half of my Frank Sinatra covers album post. You can find part one here. Mind Over Matter - New York, New York Mind Over Matter was an NYC hardcore punk band that, if their Last.FM bio is anything to be believed, played a major factor in the development of screamo. If I was Mind Over Matter, that's not something I would be bragging about. I like this cover a lot, especially how it injects NYC crime statistics into [...]
So here we are... the largest Obscure Sound compilation ever made. 21 tracks, 83 minutes. Enjoy

I once met this girl, and we were supposed to go on a date where we'd play conkers, just to be bonkers. I spent the prior afternoon kicking around a little garden of horse chestnut trees that I know, scouring the floor with competitive intensity for the best specimens. I was excited by the girl, but at the time my glee was more a simple one: just the easy pleasure of kicking through the grass, of returning to a childhood game, of doing something so cheeringly innocent and uncomplicated. Swells are a quartet residing in San Francisco. Their self-titled debut EP is a collection of laid-back indie-rock with relaxing West Coast vibes akin to The Morning Benders and Surfer Blood. The EP is packed with four varied and exciting songs that should appeal to most rock fans, especially if they're fans of The Walkmen

SecondTuesday — Buzz Bands LA's monthly songwriter night at Lot 1 Cafe — takes a turn for the eclectic in October. On the agenda: sibling rivalry, a birthday celebration, a beer crawl and plenty of good tunes for a good cause. Headlining on Oct. 11 will be Joey and Andy Siara of the Henry Clay People , who will perform solo material in something of a brotherly brawl. Who knows, they might even do a couple of songs together. Also performing will be Soft Swells , the duo of Tim Williams and Matt Welsh [...]

Last night, the Low Anthem's Ben Knox Miller made an announcement: It was the late Charlie Parker's birthday (he'd have been 91), and so the show would be played in Bird's honor. We all gave this sober nod, recognizing his nice first-time-in-Kansas City gesture.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

Hidden Shoal Recordings is proud to announce the release of the new single 'National Runner' by garage-dreampop trio The Caseworker . With 'National Runner', The Caseworker have an instant pop classic on their hands. The song's consummate balance of drone and chime features a heady mix of hypnotic guitars and driving rhythm section, all perfectly offset by Conor Devlin's starry-eyed vocal. Learning that the track is an ode to famed Ethiopian Olympic long-distance runner Miruts Yifter makes all the more sense after being doused in its heady atmosphere. "The Caseworker extract darkness from [...]

Continuing our flashback series, give Swell's "This Story" a listen. It was released on Everybody Wants To Know in 2001. The track is basically one low-tuned groove, served up fresh with all the other sounds that were current when I was 16. Swell - This Story
Quiksilver Pro NY + Free Music = Swell times. Pun intended // Surf and music has always gone hand in hand for me. My fondness of Kings of Convenience , Koop , Mason Jennings , Donovan , Jon Swift the Astrophysicist , heck even the Goons of Doom , all stemmed from one surf film or another. In just under a month - Sept. 1-15th - the Quikie Pro will be hitting the shores of Long Beach, NY . This will [...]

Zee Avi Today's free MP3 is by Malaysian Zee Avi and the lovely gentle female folk of Swell Window

On most days rock is better when it's raw. When you find a band that reminds you of a raw open wound, you've hit the jackpot. Crystal Swells sound like that giant gash you put in your knee, you know, the one from that unbelievable skating accident? It wasn't worthy of stitches, but you had to consider a trip to the emergency room for about 30 seconds. On their album, Goethe Head Soup , Crystal Swells offer up six tracks of fuzzy garage punk that are not to be missed. These songs are well constructed and perfectly executed. [...]
Current Swell, a band based in Victoria BC, is in the foreground of the "new roots" music front pushing out of Canada's west coast. The band has been around for a few years getting their early recognition around the world as a mainstay in the "surf rock" community. Their sound continues to develop into a [...]

Crystal Swells are back with another mind blistering piece of fuzzed-up surf rock. 'Mellow California' is taken from the band's album 'Goethe Head Soup', and you can listen to the song here: 'Mellow California'

"Protect Your Own" is album number two for Victoria, British Columbia's Current Swell. If you haven't heard of them before now, I hadn't either. And that's a shame. The album is a rocking, rootsy collection of original songs that are growing on me with every listen. Their bio calls them "surf rock," but it's far more versatile than that. In fact, other than the laid-back, kick-it-in-the-sun attitude, there's not much surf here. (Unless you think Dave Matthews and all his sound-alike community are surf rock. Then, I get the comparison.) I hear a lot of reggae, traces of [...]
