Long-running street punks Swingin' Utters are making their way to the area for the first time in nearly a decade; October 2001 was the last time the San Francisco quintet came through town.You'd... Continue reading "Swingin' Utters at the Bottleneck this Saturday (+ MP3)" >

Swingin' Utters have announced the next two months of tour dates as they support their new album, Here, Under Protest . The run will feature shows with Have Nots , Continental, Reverend Horton Heat and an appearance at the Oak Canyon Ranch Hootenanny 2011 with Dropkick Murphys , Murder City Devils and Supersuckers .

Haven't caught much of the Halloween spirit, this year - perhaps due to the recent stretch of warm weather, or Glee 's attempt to turn Rocky Horror into an afterschool special, or because the whole "witch house" thing makes the world seem neither fun nor spooky, or because Al Qaeda's out there trying to make our fax machines go splody. Some combination of all that. Effect being that I haven't been scouring comps for weird East European surf and psychobilly material to grind into the Annual Awesome Halloween Mix TM. BUT! [...]
Last night, I rushed out to the North Star Bar to catch a rather impressive lineup: Have Nots, The Copyrights, and then headlined by veterans The Swingin Utters. Fuck yeah.Have Nots:When the Have Nots took the stage, the room was feeling pretty empty, and there were originally only 4 or 5 people up front interested (myself included). That didn't really effect the Boston band's energy
Wow, was I an idiot... for the longest time I avoided San Francisco's Swingin' Utters because everything I've ever read about them said they were cow-punk(country mixed with punk). Now call me a musical racist, but to me, country music is like putting medicine in chocolate. No matter how much you cover country up, I'm still going to taste the bitter flavor of it.Apparently "A Juvenile Product

For a full-on crazy third day in a row, I have more new music. I got a note a couple of days ago that punk veterans the Swingin' Utters have released a new album. Hatest Grits: B-Sides and Bullshit , a collection of, well, b-sides and bullshit, hit stores Tuesday. The album compiles music from various compilations and soundtracks and things. Hatest Grits also boasts five unreleased songs, as well as some never before heard demo versions of Swingin' Utters classics. It's even rumored to have [...]

Good morning Thursday! I've really got nothing to write about today, or maybe I'm just too lazy to do an in-depth analysis of something or other. For whatever reason, I'm going to relax my mind a bit and do the blogger-favourite of "putyouriPodonshuffleandlistth efirsttensongsthatcomeupnomatt erhow embarrassingtheyare." And just to prove that I'm not cheating, I'll put on a picture of whatever comes up on my iPod. Let's begin. [...]

It's Halloween! I'm going out as someone who makes fun of people who dress up as Amy Winehouse . What are you going out as? Rhetorical. I don't care. The important thing is that, for one night only, unhip shit like surfa-gotha-rockabilly and b-movie dialogue turns cool. It's holiday magic, and I mean to honor it with a second annual low-watt low-bit Locobilly Geekout de Internationale. Spain, Denmark, Italy, The Czech Republic and Secaucus are represented below; half the fun's trying to figure out what the guy from [...]

(AFI @ Berkeley Square in 1996; photo by Chris Bellew ) Growing up in the SF/Berkeley punk scene, I always heard about the mystique of '77 and the year punk rock was born. I wasn't around for the birth of punk, but I was around for the mid '90s punk revival. And as time has passed, I've grown to think of '94 in the way I used to hear about '77. What I loved about punk rock was that every band played with a sense of purpose. Every show at Gilman Street/Berkeley Square - [...]
