Already had enough of Christmas? Then why not enjoy seeing Jacques Dutronc being buried under a symbolic avalanche of captiatlist Christmas-ness? If only he'd been dressed up as Père Noël too. Oh dear, sounds like poor Christophe is aching again this yuletide season, but at least he still believes in Father Christmas... I posted this a few years ago, but in case you've never seen it, this is the Dim Dam Dom 1966 Christmas [...]

Right, where were we? Somewhere in the not-too-distant past I posted part 12 of this verrrry slowwwwly progressing Chaîne : It was Jacques Dutronc covers band DUTRONC , but they were covering Les Problèmes - recorded at Toe Rag studios with Liam Watson at the helm, and released on Damaged Goods Records. I've got multiple linkage for you with this next one >>>>>>> [ image source ] [...]
If you're wondering just what on earth was with that "Zou bisou bisou" song from Mad Men on Sunday night, look no further — we're here to help! The song was a prime example of yé-yé, the Francophone take on bubblegum teen pop that flourished in France during the early 1960s and briefly became a global phenomenon. The genre took its name from a bastardization of the English "yeah yeah," gave the world some of the 1960s' best pop songs, and even got a serious academic working-over from Susan Sontag, who wrote about yé-yé in her 1964 essay [...]

Ha! In your face eBay sniper software! That bid in the last 2 seconds just wasn't enough to beat my highest bid. I win. You lose. I am happy. But what did I win? Currently winging its way to me is this piece of vintage vinyl. Track 2 is Sylvie's breathtaking version of The Spencer Davis Group 's mod-scorcher Gimme Some Lovin' . Now gimme some Sylvie! [...]

Alright, so it's no Dusty In Memphis, but that is not to say Sylvie A Nashville is without its charms-quite the contrary. Not unlike the Dusty In Memphis project, here we find yé-yé French chanteuse Sylvie Vartan away from the Saint-Germain and in wilds of Nashville during the mid-60s trying her hand at cutting some [...]
French it-boy Julien Doré made a new album, you may have seen the very funny clip that goes with single Kiss Me Forever. The album has several Gainsbourgian touches, you may recall his cover of SG's S S in Uruguay on his debut, and the clip for Les Limites (that referred to a video Gainsbourg made for Chez les yeye's ). The deluxe-version comes with a bonus-disc with English songs, made with his former band. I prefer the French tunes, like the (again) Gainsbourgian Golf Bonjovi, the song Glenn Close (JD likes [...]

Christmas 2010 did already pass, I know, Christmas A Go Go already shut its door for this year, but luckily there's always room for some Serge Gainsbourg paraphernalia here at FS. In 1965 a television show started at ORTF in France called Dim Dam Dom , which stood for Dimanche, Dames and D(h)ommes. The show ran for six years until 1970 and intended to be informative and humoristic with musical intermezzi. It was presented by girls like Françoise Hardy, Mireille Darc, Nathalie Delon, France Gall, Marie Laforêt and Sheila. In 1966 Dim Dam Dom [...]

Legendary ye-ye singer Sylvie Vartan returns with a very strong album , produced by Keren Ann & Doriand, who also wrote a couple of songs. Others who contributed are Benjamin Biolay (La Vanité, great song), David Hallyday (her son), La Grande Sophie and Etienne Daho. The production is very sixties, with plush keys, loads of strings and guitars drowning in echo. Duet-partners are Doriand, Julien Doré and Arthur H. Vartan isn't the world's best singer anymore - then again, she never was. This album is way better than the rehashes on Nouvele Vague. See the duet with Doré [...]

Peppermoon , the beloved trio from Paris returns with on October 18 with a great new album. Because of the 5th birthday of this blog, I can post some new tracks. Main man Pierre Faa tells all: Happy birthday Filles sourires ! Joyeux anniversaire... Thank you Guuz for these five years of passion, thanks for opening doors to artists like us. We owe a lot to Filles Sourires and the Filles Fragiles compilations . And we keep only good memories from the Filles Fragiles tour you set up. Five years [...]

Colour me surprised by the work of Sylvie Vartan , a yé-yé girl of no little talent. What I expected to be another French girl belting out typical sixties fare has revealed itself to be a smart, tough little comp of some of Sylive's best sixties moments -- though the highlights are her tracks from 1967, of which there are too few here. Missing too are the three tracks from 1968 produced by Jean-Claude Vannier , 'La Maritza', 'Un p'tit peu beaucoup' and 'Jolie poupée'. But despite this lack, Sylvie's bite and bellow pushes through and [...]
Sylvie Vartan sing Renown Japanese in 1965. Thanks of micahwave .

Or Joyeux Quatorze Juillet, to all of our French friends. For those of you unfamiliar with the celebration, today is French Independence Day. It is the 220th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille by the citizens of France, who had grown disillusioned with the rule of Louis XVI (though technically, it's the celebration of the celebration of the year after). It's the equivalent of our July 4th celebrations, and much like our holiday, the French often celebrate with parades & fireworks. And actually, there are a number of US cities that have notorious Bastille day celebrations, [...]
