As a young middle school student, I went through the notorious metal phase. If a band’s music consisted of loud guitars, testosterone-replete vocals, and dark lyrics, I probably listened to them. Though what runs through my iPod headphones has changed a lot during the last several years, System of a Down’s self-titled debut still sticks with me. It is important to note that though it is a guilty pleasure, I don’t think it is a bad album by any means. Because System of a Down was lumped into the same category as contemporaries such as Korn and Slipknot and their [...]

Brace yourselves, Halloween is coming - so i made up a top 6 (only 0,99% from 666) with the world's sexiest vegetarian musicians. If you're asking why only vegetarians, it's because we have to remember to be kind with animals in this period of year(especially with black cats, because we all know how some go crazy when this holiday is coming and do nasty things to animals whom they associate with necromancy, occultism, etc.) and - who gives us a greater example than those whom music we listen to everyday? 6. Billie Joe Armstrong - Green [...]
Rock out with your dismembered cock out Saturday night at Yuyintang.
The late 90s and early 2000s were an interesting time for popular metal music, when an often-bemoaned genre known as "nü-metal" clawed its way into existence, its rap-infused tendrils hot on the heels of bands like Rage Against The Machine and Faith No More, with its core still deeply rooted in groove-filled pop sensibilities that [...]

The System of a Down singer brought his solo material to Solana Beach // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.
Serj Tankian, one of the most eclectic and exciting frontmen of his generation, recently completed a North American solo tour. And whether you missed it or just wanna re-live the awesomeness, we have good news for you: MetalSucks' own Miikka Skaffari captured some typically-spectacular shots of the System of a Down vocalist at the legendary Fillmore in [...]
It's only about a year late, but Occupy Wall Street finally has a candidate for that anthem old media Baby Boomers spent last fall demanding . (No, sorry, the Third Eye Blind one still doesn't count.) Tom Morello has joined forces with Rise Against's Tim McIrath and Serj Tankian from System of a Down to record "We Are the 99%." The track combines power riffs that will be very familiar to Rage Against the Machine fans, lyrical calls to action ("We were asleep before, but not anymore, so fight back"), and those odd quasi-cabaret interludes of which [...]

I was so bummed that I had to miss the local System Of A Down/Deftones shows over the weekend due to other plans. Everybody who went to the shows had glowing reviews of both bands, and of course, the mighty System was out doing press. Everybody who's interviewing them would obviously be curious about any ...
This week's roster of hard and heavy new releases is pocked grossly with '80s hair metal throwback albums, like sores on a shriveled wang. Sorry for the purple prose, but fear not MetalSucks reader - we'll slip on some latex gloves and pick out the killer glam and (mostly) non-glam Shit That Comes Out Today after the jump! [...]
Well well well: yesterday's match-ups sure were br00tal! Once again we had three unequivocal knock-outs, with Johann Hegg tearing Iron Lung to shreds in a scissor fight, Dime making himself Paul Speckmann's master, and Mark Morton sending Per Wiberg off to be a lamb of god. And, once again, we had one close match - [...]

System of a Down's Serj Tankian continued to support his newly released solo album, Harakiri , with an appearance on last night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! . Tankian performed the album's lead single/title track, which you can replay below, courtesy of The Audio Perv . Recently, Tankian sat down with Consequence of Sound to discuss his recent work, including his three other solo efforts that will follow Harakiri . Check it out here .

Best known as the vocalist of quasi-prog metal band System of a Down , Serj Tankian is one artist not content with painting the same landscapes. Amidst System’s hiatus, Tankian has been working nonstop this past year, releasing a second book of poetry ( Glaring Through Oblivion ), developing a musical production ( Prometheus Bound ), and recording four solo albums: his latest hard-rocking LP, Harakiri ; his collaboration with Jimmy Urine of Mindless Self Indulgence on Fuktronic, a soundtrack to an imaginary film ; his first symphony, Orca , using [...]
Serj Tankian is one of the most interesting musicians in the rock/metal scene. His solo career is full of experimentation with a unique sound that makes it hard to look the other way with him, even without System Of A Down. Here we have the next installment in his solo career, Harakiri, and who knows ...
Oh, Serj Tankian. Bless him. Few songwriters better exemplify the pitfalls of overtly political songwriting than the top-hatted occasional poet and former System of a Down frontman — no one's denying that his heart's in the right place, but by God does he write some stridently awful lyrics. With Tankian's new album out this week, we got to thinking about his work with his former band, and about political songwriting in general. We generally have nothing but respect for anyone who wants their songs to do more than rhyme "moon" with "June," but the art of tackling politics in song [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Q + A Stefan Gosatti, Getty Back in 2011, when thousands of birds fell from the sky and millions of fish washed up on shore in freak die-offs across North America, most people were happy to accept the media's flimsy scientific explanations. Serj Tankian , the Lebanese-born Armenian-American solo artist and frontman of Grammy-Award winning hard rock band System of a Down (SOAD), didn't take [...]
I got an email from MetalSucks editorial stating that this week's Shit That Comes Out Today represents "a great chance to ease dudes into unknown stuff!" That means only one thing: BUTT LOADS of big metal new releases this week! An A-list Shit That Comes Out Today. AFTER THE JUMP. * Vintersorg Orkan (Napalm) On [...]
