I remember watching Florence and her then machine with about 50 other revellers in Black Gardenia a few years ago: it was intimate and she was largely unknown, although the talent was obvious. Those days are long gone now, with FloMa selling out Shepherd's Bush Empire and making adverts for o2, but here is perhaps [...]
Pre-sale tickets are available now, but won't be available to the general public until Fri., Aug. 28.

This stuff is lovely: ghostly Americana with broken, desolate vocals full of heartbreak rather than rage, and the most bare-boned of backing. Yes, I know, I cover a lot of this stuff. In fact you may have heard fragments of this music before, as there is a connection with Dame Satan, whose album I reviewed very positively a couple of months ago. Basically, this is the work of Andrew Simmons of that band - it's a project, not a band, as his MySpace page informs us. I'd be pleasantly surprised if anyone reading this remember Lincoln, [...]
Tabernacle is the new project from Dame Satan's Andrew Simmons. Flanked by a bevvy of guest musicians, he has recorded a new 5-track EP Word, Pioneer.Ghostly folk serves as the basis for the majority of the album. However, the Bay area resident, Kentucky-native brings much of the influence of his home state into the music. Roots and traditional music weaves its way into the mix.Unfortunately,

Opening up for TV on The Radio is no easy feat. I've seen TVOTR open up for The Faint and upstage them handily while being a relatively obscure band in contrast. So what can you do to match the energy and intensity of a band who is innovative in practically every way? Give it one hundred percent. These guys pour everything they've got into the concert. There were jump kicks, double drummers, leaping asian girls, iconic paranoia Ts, and behind the neck solos. I was discussing the show with a friend of mine [...]

TV On The Radio is the sound of distinct individuals creating noise that, while teetering on the edge of chaos, cumulates in coherent and cathartic declarations. On an album, re-takes and studio tinkering can ensure that the music doesn't fall apart. But when playing it live, it's performing without a net. And while there were one or two moments where TVOTR lost their balance, on Saturday night at the Tabernacle they pulled off the high wire act without ever falling. With minimal interaction between band members, what sounds like teamwork looked more like a magical coincidence. Let's begin with [...]

The Mars Volta finally made their triumphant return to Atlanta last Wednesday. While the shortness of their set was a disappointment to many, they packed those two hours full of their most rocking stuff. I'm a big fan of all the spacey jams, but both times I've seen them before this were chalked full of it, so I was glad I got to see more of a "crowd pleaser" sort of set. They opened with nearly a 30 minute version of "Goliath". Also, thanks to Clint pinning it down to a Ghostface Killah song, I finally figured [...]

and saw this man, right 'chere: How fitting for Tom Waits to open up his 2006 Orphans tour in a converted Baptist church in Downtown Atlanta. The Tabernacle, as it is called, holds 2,500 and has towering 100' ceilings, 2 balconies, and plenty of floor space. Lining up at 2:30 for an 8:00 show sounded like a fine idea, which paid handsome dividends. I was front and center, behind a single solitary person. The crowd didn't "rush" the stage which was a real blessing-- I thought it would get really compact once Tom [...]
