With SXSW just winding down and the hometown folk all but headed home, we're ready for more concerts and a new festival in Boise Idaho. It's the inaugural year of the Treefort Music Fest which runs from Thursday March 21 - Sunday March 24; featuring music from National, Local, and Regional acts. Some great bands like Pickwick, Animal Collective, Built To Spill, The Walkmen, Rose Windows , and countless others. Here in Seattle, we start with the week off with a great show on Monday night with Django Django and Night Moves at [...]

Mariachi el Bronx perform at the Paramount on Tuesday / photo by Brittney Bollay With everyone descending on Austin this week for SXSW, that usually leaves things a bit bare in the cupboard. Luckily there are still some good choices for the folks staying at home. Things start with The James Hunter Six  at Triple Door on Monday night. Tuesday night, there's a great show at the Paramount Theatre with Flogging Molly, Mariachi El Bronx , and Donots and then we have Star Anna, Jason Dodson & Kevin Barrans, and Erin [...]

Walla Walla, Washington is known for its onions and wines, not so much for all girl punk bands. Come to think of it I don't know of any all boy punk bands from there either. Being stuck in the southeast corner of the state subsisting on onions and wine can do funny things to a person. To prove it Chastity Belt have moved to Seattle with tall tales of dudes with ponytails, alien abductions, giant vaginas, big pick-up trucks and sleeping with the dead. Their latest EP called Dude is three short sharp [...]

Now that the Fall Fundraising Drive is over here at the station (thanks to everyone who donated), Rocktober marches on with another great week of shows ahead. On Tuesday, everyone's favorite Gossip plays at Showbox at the Market, and on Wednesday night Das Racist plays there too. Thursday night, Admiral Fallow is at Tractor Tavern. Friday is definitely the busiest night out with a ton of great choices, including the third annual Reykjavik Calling , a free show presented by KEXP with Icelandic artists Apparat Organ Quartet , Sudden Weather Change , [...]
Sigur Rós plays on Wednesday at Paramount As we recover from a beautiful (and hot!) weekend in Seattle, we have a whole crop of new and amazing shows to share with you this week. We start off slowly with some great small club shows at the Tractor with Phosphorescent and Mimicking Birds, and at the Sunset with  Southeast Engine and Danielle Henry . Tuesday night, we recommend a great show at Neptune Theatre with Sharon Van Etten, Tennis, and Lemolo . [...]

I tried to wrap my cat in a tortilla for an accompanying picture to this post but that didn't happen. Something about being wrapped up brings out the claws in those wiley bastards. So I went to the next best thing, a picture of my chihuahua (which is generally looked at as being almost as Mexican as a tortilla) and my cat. TacocaT is a Seattle post punk band that describe themselves as "Go-Go's meets the Monkees. Kurt meets Courtney." They have a little rock and roll, feminist sci-fi and pet of the day running [...]

by Bill Pearis DOWNLOAD : Tacocat - Spring Break-Up (MP3) Seattle's palindromic indie rockers TacocaT are visiting the East Coast for a quick tour with Philadelphia's Slutever that hits NYC tonight (7/5) at Death by Audio with Mannequin Pussy playing as well. The bands will be back in the city on July 14 at Shea Stadium [...]
The folks over at PhilaMOCA have put together a mini-fest of epic proportions to welcome Alabama grunge surf rockers Nightmare Boyzzz. The line-up is fully stocked with local favorites including the pumped-up punks of Bandname, girl power-duo Slutever, and the garage-rock stylings of The Shakes and The Eeries. Also on the bill is Seattle's pop-punk ... Continue reading ’

When I program the annual Big Gay Podcast, spotlighting KEXP artists who are members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, I have a couple of goals in the mind. The first is to connect music lovers with a bunch of artists and songs worthy of special consideration. And the second is to do right my teenage self. When I started making mix tapes in high school, there's no way I could've assembled a compilation along the same lines the Big Gay Podcast. Maybe, with a lot of leeway, I could've filled one side of a 90-minute [...]

Wussy perform in the Northwest for the first time ever! / photo from SXSW by Jim Bennett There's something for just about anyone this week and a ton of great local choices. On Monday night, things get awfully loud at the Crocodile with A Place To Bury Strangers, This Will Destroy You, and Dusted, while some of our favorite Canadian's - Japandroids hit the stage at Neumo's. Tuesday night, Posse, Big Eyes, and Battle Stations play a Free show at Chop Suey, Lemonade [...]
Do you know what's better mood music than a spitting pop punk song about getting over a stupid boy when you yourself are currently in the throws of getting over a stupid boy? I'll tell you: Nothing. By this point, I'm over the boy (did that just get way deep?), but Spring Break-Upremains a go-to pick-me-up. It's written by TacocaT, who not only have a totally awesome name but they're also
Everyone loves a good palindrome.

A couple of years back, we stumbled across something called A Reference Of Female-Fronted Punk Rock — a wonderful, exhaustive compilation of old school female-fronted punk bands from 1979-1989. (You can find it here if you're interested.) But as much as we love all the bands featured, we got to thinking recently: well, what about their contemporary counterparts? We've been amusing ourselves putting together a selection, and with the new Screaming Females record, Ugly , out this week, it seems a good time to break out some of our favorites. Suggestions [...]

The new Hunx album Hairdresser Blues has been circulating about the blogosphere for a minute now and to say the least, it's a another solid entry in this prolific glam-punk's output. Gritty and raw, and sassy and full of sneer, the album hits on similar themes with the same reserve of talent the hairdresser-turned-rock-and-ro ll-star brings [...]

Stuarto and I talked a lot just before my show began and in the minutes after it started about the radio station he's been building at his house. He's dubbing it 1020Radio, and you can check out the (right now) super minimalist site he's running over at 1020Radio.net . You can also find it on Facebook . It's been a long time coming; the station is nearing completion and just about to hit the Internets. All goes well, and time permitting, [...]

Facebook / tacocat.bandcamp.com/ Seattle's TacocaT are a new find for me but released an album as far back as 2009, I've not found much about it so I'll ignore that for now and concentrate on their latest release, a new 7" four track EP which came out this week via Hardly Art entitled 'Take Me to Your Dealer' and its lead track "Spring Break-Up"... The title sums track better than the following words do, a bitter-sweet number that packs plenty of spunky, energetic bite into its two minute [...]
