Legendary British group Talk Talk are being honored for their excellent career with a book this spring, entitled Spirit of Talk Talk. It's a collection of illustrations and written accounts from some prominent names that were influenced by Talk Talk, who are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. James Marsh, who illustrated many Talk Talk

Sunday was a day of rediscovery for me. It had been years since I listened to Doolittle , the 1989 breakthrough album by Pixies, in its entirety. So many that I'd nearly forgotten what a fantastic album it is. Then yesterday, on the way home from my morning run, my iPod shuffle landed on "Debaser," the opening track, and it all came flooding back to me. What was it about Doolittle that made it such a perfect album, so much so that when I started to listen to it for the first time in [...]
Self-titled albums are one thing. But when a band names one of its songs after itself - or, alternately, when a band names itself after one of its songs - it's a pretty big deal. The song itself comes off looking something like a mission statement, an encapsulation of everything that the band means. When Bad Company names a song "Bad Company," they want you to know that this song is what they're all about . Not too many bands have been brave enough to attempt this trick throughout history. For some reason, a lot of [...]
It is astounding that Laughing Stock was one of the first albums widely considered "post rock" for many reasons. First, Talk Talk was a New Wave band, and a fairly successful one at that. By their final album, the band (or what was left of it) abandoned that staple and moved to a more experimental sound. Spirit of Eden, the album preceding this one, abandoned all pop sensibility and led
Among the 62 albums I acquired in 2011 , many were old albums I'm only now catching up on. Some stuck with me better than others. Here are my (unranked) favorite new-to-me albums of the year. Harmonia: Musik von Harmonia and Cluster: Zuckerzeit 2011 was kind of a Clustery year for me. I acquired Zuckerzeit as well as an earlier Kluster album (terrible), two solo albums from Hans Joachim Roedelius (both not bad), and Harmonia's debut (Harmonia is Cluster + Neu's Michael Rother). Of them all, Musik von [...]

I've mentioned Talk Talk's final studio album before , but it has been a few years. Recorded in 1991, Laughing Stock and the previous album Spirit of Eden were a departures from the band's more pop efforts previously. These albums represented Talk Talk stretching their creative muscles by incorporating a less-synthesizer and more acoustic instrument approach, drawing from many music styles, but employing a very jazz-influenced approach. It's this overall ambiance and approach that confounded fans and caused a dramatic drop in sales. Much as albums from bands like Big Star and Velvet Underground [...]
Dan Barrett's music plays like a spectre in the night, most effective to the highly attentive and surveyors of the smallest details. It's something that exists and has its hand on your shoulder. Your reason for ignoring it has nothing to do with the light ethereal touch, but rather that it may trigger thoughts that [...]
"I saw my first armadillo on the road to Abilene, but it was on it's back, viscera spread across double-yellow lines." [Talk Talk - "The Rainbow" MP3] A man drove his wagon west through Abilene. Though the city was settled more than a century ago, he thought himself a pioneer—a trailblazer for this modern era. [...]

May got away from me in terms of writing for this blog, unfortunately. Too bad because I acquired a lot of albums I'd meant to write more about. Well, here's the rundown of everything I acquired this month, in the order I got it. In short: this was a month where a lot of past favorites put out new albums, most of which were pretty good but few of which surpassed previous efforts. Klaus Schulze: Dune Prior to this month I only had one other Schulze album, his first, Irrlicht . It's an [...]
Versatile singer-songwriter and Broadway composer Duncan Sheik releases 'Covers 80s' a collection of British synthpop tunes that he loved as a teenager.
The completely unknown Canopies will not remain elusive for long. That much is easy to predict when listening to "Rebels", a track that is bound to explode in the music blogosphere. On their name-your-price EP (download it here), the Milwaukee-based trio have incorporated their love for '80s synth-pop with recent indie-rock innovations, resulting in an [...]

Talk Talk: Inheritance Purchase A lot of albums have run through my head as I've considered this week's theme, but it was Geoviki's thoughts about the nostalgic appeal of some music that convinced me that I had to post something from Talk Talk's 1988 album, Spirit of Eden. What makes a great album might be a collection of great songs. But Geoviki is right that what makes a favorite album is a collection of great songs coupled with an album's role in [...]
At least one man - maybe scores of men - once said that music is not your friend in the immediate aftermath of a negative life-changing event. I don't know who said that (Thomas Hobbes? Kierkegaard? Sirhan Sirhan?) but he made a good point. Pretty much every song ever penned was done so to remind [...]
BT and TalkTalk have had their call for a judicial review of the Digital Economy Act rejected by the High Court . The ISPs have indicated they will appeal. -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch

A couple weeks back, I was poking around for info on the '80s cult movie Straight To Hell and most of what I found also mentioned another '80s cult movie - Repo Man - mentioned. (Alex Cox directed both movies) My friends and I knew of Repo Man in 1984 when it was released and became an instant cult movie and favorite with midnight crowds. We certainly didn't see it at the time, but, surprisingly, as we were living in Sticksville, we were aware of the movie. [...]

Talk Talk : Talk Talk [ purchase ] Talk Talk : Time It's Time [ purchase ] There's so much doublespeak in this post that I'll have you seeing double! Here is a pair of songs by the dual-named 80s synthpop group, Talk Talk. The first song is also called Talk Talk, which slots this band with the likes of Bad Company and Big Country – groups synonymously named with their first big hit. [...]
