Simultaneously soothing, danceable, and thrash-worthy, Talkdemonic tosses several genres into a blender and produces refreshing results.
Twin Sister is a dream pop / indie pop band hailing from the East Coast. Their sound is similar to that of Beach House, Real Estate, and I think possibly comparable to a more instrumental Metric. The band is fronted by Andrea Estella, who's vocals smoothly drone into the melodic pop sounds of Twin Sister. [...]
Music in need of a film. Talkdemonic's music has been refined since the duo's 2004 debut Mutiny Sunshine and more than ever it reminds me of film soundtrack music. Unfortunately, the term "cinematic" and the ubiquitous description of instrumental music as "a soundtrack for an imaginary film" are so overused that they have become almost as meaningless as the term "minimal". All this to say, despite its dynamic mixture of strings and electronics, since Ruins doesn't come with a film, it...

There is no scientific methodology to picking the best of album of 2011. Every year it does not seem like any good music is on the horizon then the music that matters start to tickle our ears. We go with the gut check versus a pedantic drivel as our motto around here. Sometime music is able to surprise you on first listen -sometimes second but if it does nothing after third pass we just move on along. Other times you respect a few words someone else says and you suddenly see the light. These are the various reasons we [...]

Talkdemonic hasn't played a Portland show since their excellent album Ruins came out earlier this year, but that's all about to change as we tick ever closer to 2012. The Portland duo of Kevin O'Connor and Lisa Molinaro is headlining a New Year's Eve blowout (that's Saturday, December 31, 2011, calendar whiz) alongside Deelay Ceelay, Brainstorm, and DJ Freaky Outty at the Mission Theater . Look how festive they are in the picture! You should go! Actually, you really should: We're giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky winner [...]

I've been in a Modest Mouse phase for much of the last week and I was perusing the Modest Mouse official website, I came across lead singer Isaac Brock 's music label called Glacial Pace Recordings . The site featured one of their artists, Talkdemonic , and this song called Revival from the band's latest album that came out in October. Revival is an instrumental song and it's a pretty song. It evokes a wintery image in my mind. I'm not usually a fan of instrumental songs, but I [...]

Having seen Modest Mouse on several occasions, and in various settings, I headed off to Stubbs this past Tuesday a little skeptical of what I'd see. Before I get onto that, let's skip ahead to talk about opener Talkdemonic. I can honestly say, in retrospect, that Talkdemonic was the best band at Stubbs last Tuesday. They don't have the traditional Portland sound, or at least the one we've come [...]

"I'm looking for something that'll...break through. You know?" James Woods' Max Renn yearns in David Cronenberg's 1983 cult classic Videodrome . Oh, how things have changed. In today's day and age, we've drowned in media. It's swallowed us. We're nothing but a bubble amidst one infinite, engulfing abyss. Intimidated? You should be. With each passing second, you're losing opportunities to take advantage of a culture that's moving ahead and at an exhausting rate. You could very well be alone...left behind...abandoned. Terrified yet? Yes? Well, that's more like it. -Michael Roffman President/Editor-in-Chief
In a June interview with his local weekly, the Willamette Week , Talkdemonic's Kevin O'Connor revealed, "I wrote two albums worth of songs in between Eyes at Half Mast and this one that I threw out because I thought they sounded too much like our last two albums." Thankfully, he didn't send his band to purgatory like another Kevin [Shields] did with My Bloody Valentine, but sometimes overthinking is overthinking. Give him credit. On Ruins , the Portland duo's fourth album and first for Isaac Brock's Glacial Pace label [...]

Date 11/811 & 11/9/11 Location Stubbs Doors 7pm Tickets SOLD OUT! I hope most of you were paying attention to sites that think more in the future and saw the recent announcement about the Modest Mouse shows at Stubbs in Austin. I got a chance to see Spencer Krug's final performance as Moonface in support of Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped on Sunday night at the Bowery Ballroom. As usual, as always, it was pretty much perfect. This was the third time I'd seen him in NY as Moonface (4th time overall) and the 12th time I've seen one of Spencer's bands live, which I thought was impressive until I met someone at the show who had seen him over 40 times. And I thought I was a stalker. I didn't stalk on Sunday though, [...]

Though it's great news that Ruins , the new album from Talkdemonic , is out this week, it's probably even better news for the band that they'll be out on tour later this month with the one and only Flaming Lips . But before the band win over Lips fans, you'll be able to catch them in New York when they perform at this year's CMJ Fest. One of the CMJ takes place at Pianos on October 21, and they'll be playing the next day too (at a venue TBA). Talkdemonic [...]

It's been a long time, but The Yellow Stereo is back in action! It also means that our staple feature, 'The Graboid' (Weekly/Daily/Whatever) also makes its triumphant return. This has always been my way to discover new music and while skimming through this week's releases, it quickly reminded me how useful doing this every week since 2006 has been for me. Hopefully, it has done the same for you. I haven't listened to many of these albums outside of Feist , DJ Shadow , and Zola Jesus , but have sampled enough to have a [...]

Talkdemonic - "Revival" The changing of the season and the beauty that it brings. The viola that ebbs and flows throughout the first half of this song moves with the ease and grace of a fall breeze through the golden brown tones of the tree leaves, guiding one leaf after another gently towards the earth below. When things settle down momentarily around three quarters of the way through, you can feel the invigorating chill of the winter air arriving into town. When the vibrant green of summer fades to the rich [...]
