Talking Heads: The book I read [1977] Talking Heads: No compassion [1977] Talking Heads: 1-2-3 Red light [1977] These are taken from the widely-owned FM recordings of the Talking Heads' December 3, 1977 show at the Old Waldorf Theater, in San Francisco.
Originally written by Al Green and Hi Records house guitarist Mabon Hodges in 1973. The track first appeared on Al Green Explores Your Mind (The Right Stuff). However, my personal favorite version of "Take Me to the River" was done in 1978 by the Talking Heads. "Take Me to the River" also became a top 40 hit for Talking Heads. It's been a long week. But for all the right reasons. It's time to kick back and enjoy the fruits of our labour-to spend time with people we love, to enjoy the space we have spent time and money and energy to create. For me thats gonna mean an awesome breakfast , some great music and spending time with my favourite birthday girl -doesn't really get much better than that methinks. Well unless you add a little bit of talking heads' 'slippery people' -into the mix-to get [...]

Dear Sir, I wanted to thank you so much for wearing that see-through crocheted black nipple-shirt while you were working out today. The fellas' and I were talking about in the locker room and agreed that there truly aren't enough people comfortable displaying nipple in public. You, sir, are a fashion pioneer. Why bother with things like cloth, comfort or sanitation when you can tell the world, here are my nipples, here me roar. I'm proud, I'm scantily attired and I'm ready to bench two sets of 45s on the bench press. Perhaps the only thing more impressive [...]
Today begins (continues?) the push to make LCD Soundsystem a top 40 band... if for only one week. Earlier this year, frontman James Murphy implored fans that if they planned on buying the album, please do so in the first week , to push them higher on the Billboard charts . Now folks who weren't sure they were going to buy the album have a chance to join in the fun as well, as you can hear it streaming for free (via AOL) and know first hand that it's a [...]

Of Montreal last night was insane. They said they'd put the money from the Outback ad to good use on tour and they weren't lying. I've never seen so many costume changes in one show. Before I go into the show I first need to mention that I frustratingly forgot my laptop from home so I'm writing this entry in my school's library. What an inconvenience. A week without my computer...this feels like a social experiment testing whether the computer is something I own and use at my will or if it really controls me. Back to the show. There [...]
Much as I would like to present my music chronologically (either forward or backward), enthusiasm does not follow the historian's cold logic. Violent Femmes! Woo hoo! I discovered them less than an hour ago . And no, they're not from the Noughties. They're from the Eighties! I used to think the late 70s and early 80s were reserved for Disco and crappy hair metal. Not so. We must scratch a little below the surface. Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun This song may sound familiar. [...]

Can an Oscar winner get a break? Last year Paul Haggis had finally made folks forget he was the creator of Walker, Texas Ranger by becoming first person in the history of the Academy Awards to write screenplays to back-to-back Best Picture Winners, for Crash and Million Dollar Baby . Now he's back in television (along with Crash co-writer Bobby Moresco) with the NBC mid-season replacement series The Black Donnellys , and after [...]

It's somewhat rare when you get music on Lost , and it usually ties something together, and last night's epsiode ( #3.10 "Tricia Tanaka Is Dead" ) is no different. The song that opens and closes the episode is Three Dog Night's "Shambala" , with the closing moving seamlessly into an orchestrated version performed by composer Michael Giacchino ( The Incredibles .) The song, itself, touches on one of the themes of the show, fate versus free will, as exhibited in the lyric "everyone is lucky, every one is [...]
Right-click to save! Psycho Killer - The Talking Heads, from Talking Heads:77 I'm late posting this one by a minute, but I figured that the original deserved a spot on the list. She's Crazy - Vaganza, from Vaganza I ran across this album working for a newspaper a few years ago, buried in a box of demo CDs that no one had ever listened to, and have since been dismayed to find nothing else from the band. This song is a little jazz, a little swing, and a lot [...]

In our series of Albums Previously Overlooked by me for a long time , today we feature Talking Heads' Speaking in Tongues. To me, Talking Heads used to end with Remain In Light, most probably because the monumental The Name Of This Band Is didn't feature anything from their later efforts. So I felt like Remain In Light was a pretty perfect swan song and never really cared for what came after that. In fact, though, the successor doesn't just consist of the band's probably biggest hit, "Burning Down the House", but instead delivers just the [...]

When listening to music there is always a feeling that I'm searching for. When the time comes to put the record on the turn table and drop the needle I may not completely know what that feeling is. But, eventually the artist will lead the way. When the sound comes through the groove and the swirling sonic soundscapes come pouring out of the speaker i'm at home with blissful noise. For me, their is nothing more thrilling than listening to a great debut album. Everything is new to you; the vocal runs, the chorus, the verse, the bridge. [...]

Day 12 in a crazy attempt to post 5 love songs every day till Valentines Day Sure divorce may be common place today, but back in the day relationships lasted forever. Our grandparents knew what real love is. Here are some classics to help you and your schmoopie (they said that back then didn't they?) stick together. Elvis Presley - I Can't Help Falling In Love With You [MP3] Van Morrison - Moondance (Live) [MP3] [...]

I thought I saw Lauren Bacall The last post for my driving theme and my last post for the next week because Mrs Vicar, the kids and I are off to Dorset for some r & r. For tracks numbers 9 and 10 we're back to the early eighties with a couple of fine contributions by The Clash and Talking Heads . The 'Combat Rock' album saw The Clash in a state of near collapse. Mick Jones [...]
I haven't updated in nearly week, want to know why? Because Verizon DSL is a giant pile of shit that can't get their heads out of their asses and fix a shitty connection. I planned a bigger post for today but I don't want to press my luck with uploading files tonight. Hopefully I'll have more this weekend. Argh. Music From The Movie, "Athens, GA - Inside/Out" The Squalls - Na, Na, Na, Na Flat Duo Jets - Crazy Hazy Kisses [...]

As I was walking down St. Marks Place last week on my way to an always-killer falafal at Mamoun's , I stumbled across what looked like a Playskool version of the old CBGB awnings on the North side of the street. Turns out, it's the new CBGB Boutique. Intrigued, I walked down the steps and into what looked like the Juniors section of Nordstrom at the Short Hills Mall. Under klieglight-bright lighting there were neatly hangered circular racks of dozens of styles of clothing, all of which bared the CBGB logo, little of which looked [...]

So lets just say, hypothetically speaking, a fictional student went to school at a large university with a huge library that allowed him (or her) to check out, I don't know, lets say five CDs at a time and listen to them while in the library. If this situation was actually possible, and it most certainly isn't, but if it was it would be feasible that the student who checked out those CDs wasn't actually listening to them while in the library, but was actually burning them onto his (or her) harddrive in mp3 format while getting some studying [...]
So, it's a new year, and we've pledged to keep things interesting for all of you who like to visit frequently (but mainly for me). We're trying to come up with new features that may happen more than once (or regularly, as some might say). This may be one of those—the idea being that, on the traditional "day of rest," the day that everyday is like, the day that's...um...here again, in tidy attire, will be the day to post songs that wouldn't necessarily be posted, and group them together in useless, arbitrary categories. Sounds like fun to me. [...]
