New Zealand pop pioneer (and beer-endorsement beneficiary ) Chris Knox had a stroke on Thursday and is in the hospital, although according to people close to him he's recovering quite well and no longer in pain (after some scary early reports). "He enjoyed his vegetable frittata this morning but I suffered the classic Knox withering look when I mentioned beer," Knox's friend Roy Martyn said in a statement on the blog that his family and friends have set up to update people on his condition, and to let those people who love his music leave messages of support. Sad news via Pitchfork , New Zealand lo-fi pioneer (inventor?) Chris Knox of the Tall Dwarfs is in the hospital with a stroke. Reportedly he may never walk again. This is really sad news for anybody but especially somebody of Chris's statue. I was fortunate enough to see the Tall Dwarfs play when they toured with the Olivia Tremor Control a few years back and they were really great live and came off as truly nice people. Say a prayer for him please. <strong >MP3 and videos after the jump... [...]

It was a sad start to the week for Kiwi music fans, as they learned that the man Trouser Press calls the " godfather of the New Zealand alternative-music scene " was hospitalized with a stroke last Thursday. Fifty-seven-year-old Chris Knox is said to be unable to speak. While many New Zealand news outlets are reporting that he may be wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life, an Otago Daily Times article suggests that Knox is "showing good signs" and these pronouncements "were [...]

Filed under: News Indie fans in both the U.S. and New Zealand were stunned to learn over the weekend that Kiwi legend Chris Knox suffered a stroke . The 57-year-old musician/songwriter/cartoonist is recovering at Auckland City Hospital. "We'd just like to say that Chris' partner Barbara Ward and his children John and Leisha are grateful for the support and love they've received, and at the moment everyone's focus is just on Chris and his recovery, and we just ask that people be respectful of that," a spokesman for the [...]

New Zealand, anyone? [mp3] Surf City / Dickshakers Union

so i attended a lecture this week by shakti maira about beauty, aesthetics, art and happiness. putting aside all the new age nonsense and 'isn't western culture bankrupt' talk that came with some of the already convinced new-age bores, the argument was an interesting one. not one that swayed me in anyway but a talking [...]
Hello, Mr. Harrison. Recently somebody made fun of somebody for using the word "Humpday." Some people can be so very cruel. Sigh. Remember when you wanted to add that classic indie song to your Myspace, but after a quick search discovered the artist was so old and unpopular with the kids those days that YOU had to create a fan page and then YOU had upload the songs your damn self just to link a single track back to your profile? New Zealand's the Clean totally needed one of those fan pages. Real bad. Clean guitarist David Kilgour seemed to agree, and eventually sent a request for ownership of the new fan "sight" (that's how David [...]
Tall Dwarfs "Nothing's Going To Happen (Wall of Dwarfs version)" - This is song is a small battle in the war against inertia, but it's a fight the singer doesn't really want to win. The words are a self-fulfilling prophecy, and even when he sounds like he's trapped, panicked, and flailing around, there's no sense that he'd ever try to break free of this monotonous situation. By the time the full band kicks in, it seems like a full-blown celebration of limitation and futility. It doesn't even matter what is not going to happen -- escape, success, [...]

Please Quiet Ourselves Genre: Indie / Pop From: Berkeley, California, United States Grammatically incorrect and shockingly youthful Berkeley collective, Please Quiet Ourselves, grew out of a soundtrack that Jojo Brandel created for a school film project. Experimenting with snatches of noise rock and pieces from the Black Orpheus soundtrack Brandel created 'Color Chart', a short pop [...]
I'm revisiting the idea of revisitation. Like many things I say I'm going to do on this site and then completely forget about, I had intended to periodically go back to artists that have previously gotten the retro treatment to acknowledge the fact that the You Tube library is ever expanding. There's no way to be comprehensive, so we can at least follow up. Well, I did it once anyway. Twice, now. Tall Dwarfs - "All My Hollowness to You" [...]

The thing with being an obsessive music type, is that the need for discovery is pretty insatiable and it leads you to alot of dead ends. Perceived influences half mentioned in magazines, name dropped by smug bassists in interviews, or suggested by all knowing Amazon purchase bots fill the heart with the hope of discovery. More often than not, after securing the object of interest through persistent E Bay auctioneering or eagle eyed crate diving, you're left empty. Something doesn't sound like it was described, or the influence is apparent but a subsequent artist built from a [...]
