All it takes is one quick listen to Tall Firs' Too Old to Die Young, their second release for Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace, to hear how this Brooklyn electronic folk band have found the perfect home on the Sonic Youth guitarist's record label. The dueling guitars of Dave Miles and Aaron Mullan recall the quieter moments of Sonic Youth, or like-minded Nineties bands like Eric's Trip or Sebadoh , while their vocals share Moore's laid back, everyman style of delivery. These references are most evident on numbers like the lead track, "So Messed Up," where a delicately [...]

Lots of truly great albums to be had this week, with releases from the likes of Destroyer and DeVotchka - both of whom we've covered here extensively. One album in particular that I would really like to highlight is Volume One from She & Him - the very high-profile collaboration between M. Ward and actress Zooey Deschanel. I wasn't too keen on listening to this early on, until recently hearing a track on NPR one afternoon and becoming instantly hooked. I'm currently listening to the album right now, and it sounds surprisingly refreshing, as Zooey is more [...]

tall firs thurson moore band i arrived just in time for the start of tall firs . i really like this band and had very high expectations going in. it sort of started out a bit slow for me, with what seemed like a 10 minute opening song. it eventually picked up nicely and they finished out with 'woods', hands down their best song. tall firs - woods [...]
Monday: Ravens & Chimes + Spanish Prisoners @ Mercury Lounge 8pm $8 I've heard a ton of words of praise for Ravens and Chimes since October when they apparently wooed every blogger in New York during CMJ. Unfortunately I have yet to give the band much of my time other then the occassional listen to a tune when it hits my iPod on shuffle. Perhaps its time to see if the hype is merited or not.

Sunday. Is it time again already for a new mix tape? Ugh, alright. Hold on, let me get my glasses. [2 minute pause] Ah, much better. Before we get started, I figured I would reprint for you the mini top five (it's actually a top six, but who's counting!) that a lovely Swanfungus reader e-mailed me this weekend. I recently posed a rhetorical question on the topic of women, but since I actually received a legitimate response from one of you, I will reprint it for your reading pleasure. Here are the top five reasons girls like to [...]

How are you today? I'm fine, thanks. What did you do this morning? Oh, sounds pretty mundane...I, on the other hand, went ice-skating on a football field of cow shit. You think I'm kidding, but here's the proof. Eleven miles west of downtown Amarillo is Cadillac Ranch. I'm not sure what the significance of it is, but there are ten Cadillacs buried nose-first in the ground in the middle of a farm. Lucky for me, it rained last night. As I pulled up to entrance, two young guys from Massachusetts were laughing and scrubbing their shoes [...]

I spent quite a bit of time this past weekend going through my massive library of tunes, selecting cuts for the next episode of Michael Stanley Made Me Do It . One band that really caught my attention was Tall Firs, with their haunting psychedelic folk tune "Buddy/ Baby." It didn't really fit in with the rockin' vibe of the podcast I was putting together. The slow, brooding, and tortured soul thing couldn't hang with big riff rock and roll. However, once things slowed down, it showed itself to be a perfect fit for those [...]

January is normally a very slow time for the music industry, but so far 2007 has been an exception to that rule. With all the hoopla surrounding the new Arcade Fire, and a couple of really good shows here early in the year the slow trend appears to have been bucked for the time being. This week is a bit of an odd week, there are some terrific shows on certain days and absolutely nothing on other days. Here's my picks for the week!!! Monday: I was looking through several concert calendars and nothing [...]

Notes from a weekend: It was my bright idea to walk from This Recording Headquarters over to 104 and CPW for Gideon's birthday. First he let me win at Madden '07 which may be the most fun game to play since Blades of Steel . Though Brady went down in the second quarter with a broken arm, Matt Cassel stepped up to throw a mind-boggling 5 TDs and 3 INTs, including a late one to Ben Watson to seal the deal. I hate it, seriously and a lot, when I don't know whether or not [...]
