As part of a gang of 11 bloggers last month, I spent 10 days in Thailand and India courtesy of Smirnoff's Nightlife Exchange Project checking out the nightlife, music and culture of the cities of Mumbai, Bangkok and Bangalore. The middle leg of my 10 day trip was four days in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. The city is home to about 14 million people and it feels like it too. There are people everywhere you look, everywhere you walk. Each street is teeming with bodies: hawking, walking, sleeping, hanging about, trying not [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Holy Hell "That's so crazy," DJ Z-Trip said backstage at Coachella as news of the volcanic ash affecting thousands of travelers worldwide reverberated louder than Them Crooked Vultures and Street Social Sweeper Club on the main stage Friday night. That may have been an understatement, but it's about the only statement that sums up the feeling among artists, fans and other music industry members backstage this weekend in the desert of Indio, CA. Cliff's recent post about Charanjit Singh reminded me of some other successful "east meets west" music. Released back in 1998, classically trained tabla player Talvin Singh 's debut album " O.K " seamlessly blended Indian/ eastern Asian melodies and rhythms with the western dance music styles of intelligent drum & bass and jungle. The opening track " Traveller " is an epic- sweeping bollywood strings (here played by the Madras Philharmonic Arkestra), rumbling sub bass, Indian flute (played by Rakesh Chaurasia ), tabla, raga, some drum & bass beats, and [...]

Since I'm a little shaken up after barely surviving a run-in with Jay Leno's chin last night, I'll get right to it... Talvin Singh Who he is: The master of the tabla and sometime tech support person for Time Warner Cable... get it? I know. I suck. What he sounds like: He was one of the founders of the whole Asian Underground movement in which traditional Indian sounds were mixed with [...]

Here's my ultimate music festival and it would be either on a remote island, or at Golden Gate Park in August. There are old and new, alive and dead, and everything in between, so I can only dream. Oh yeah, there would only be 500 people because that way I am less likely to be standing next to the drunk girl that keeps talking, the guy with his shirt off pointing his index finger randomly in the air, or the couple that just ate some chocolates and laughs at everything slow and dark. I am truly excited about [...]

Asian Underground tabla pro Talvin Singh will play Coachella 2010 this April. The 2010 instalment of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will see Singh part of a Sunday lineup that includes, among others, Gorillaz, Thom Yorke and Julian Casablancas (of The Strokes). The California festival (rated by our friends MTV Iggy as one of the top 10 music festivals you have to check out this year) will take place between April 16-18 at Indio. This year's lineup is, as always , pretty huge. Headliners include Jay-Z and Muse with able support [...]

JAY-Z! If you haven't heard [...]

The Ladakh Confluence came to an end on Monday, August 31. We followed the festival right from its announcement to it's conclusion , and thanks to Sharin Bhatti , have these gorgeous pics from the hills to share. The Ladakh Confluence: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 (was largely rained out) Ladakhi Monks Gyomo Nakamura blessing the Confluence and declaring it open on day one. [...]

Many would have called it a catastrophe. Others would probably say amiable heresy. Tenacious D could write a ska song about it. But The Ladakh Confluence 2009 seemed to ride above all evil, all hiccups (major and minor both) and well, the scenic splendour of the arid wasteland in the Trans Himalayas provded the perfect backdrop for the four day music festival. In its maiden year, the extended line-up unfolded over the four days in the very ambitious venue of the highest plateau in the world - Leh. Considering the fact that over 60 artists traveled [...]

The Ladakh Confluence kicked off on Friday, August 28 against the scenic backdrop of the Himalayas. Sharin Bhatti brings us this report from Day 1. Indiecision will have daily updates from Ladakh through the course of the event! Da y one at most new festivals read hiccups. And more so when it's a confluence at the highest plateau in the world. The Ladakh Confluence popped its cherry on Friday, August 28. Things that were supposed to go off to a flying start were temporarily halted by [...]

The countdown to The Ladakh Confluence has begun as work-weary city folks plan eagerly to head to the mountains for a four day vacay away from the suits, the ties, the traffic and the trauma of the cosmopolitan. The confluence takes place between August 28-31 and the scenic surroundings of the Ladakh mountains will play host to a four day "eco-adventure and percussion festival". According to the organisers The Ladakh Confluence brings together musicians, artists, green living experts and lovely folks like you from all over the globe for one heck of [...]

Because I'm lazy, let me quote from the wikipedia article : " Asian Underground is a term associated with various British Asian musicians (mostly Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan) who blend elements of western underground dance music and the traditional music of their home countries. The first well-known mention was the compilation album Anokha - Soundz of the Asian Underground released in 1997 and masterminded by Talvin Singh. It is not a strict musical genre per se, since the specific sounds can vary wildly (from Cornershops' Britpop to Panjabi MCs' jungle). Most of these artists [...]

Boo! Scare ya? Didn't think so. Anyhoo, it's October 31, so it must be time for the obligatory (somewhat) Halloween-related song selection... So I got up this morning and turned the TV on to some special about the true origins of Dracula on The History Channel, and found my Halloween inspiration. Turns out Vikram the Vampire is Dracula's Hindu cousin, and he works at the 7-11 on Centinela and Venice. Ba-dump-bump! Seriously, though, it is an actual story, and the full text of it [...]
