As Tamaryn withdraws into their creative lair to dream up new worlds and new sounds, their last performance in SF left fans hoping for their swift return to the stage.

Have a fabulous Friday: ► Those kids that played the Echoplex last weekend? Yeah, the Rolling Stones ? They kick off their "50 and Counting Tour" tonight at Staples Center. ► Brooklyn duo Javelin and Helado Negro team up at the year's final First Fridays event at the Natural History Museum . ► Built to Spill does the first of two nights at the Troubadour with a new lineup — drummer Steve Gere and bassist Jason Albertini have replaced Scott Plouf and Brett Nelson, respectively, joining singer-guitarist Doug Martsch and [...]
Catch Tamaryn on May 4th at the Chapel in San Francisco before they vanish into their hazy wonderland for the rest of the year.

Hope everyone had a super Record Store Day… sadly this RSD release passed me by whilst crate digging. Producer Jorge Elbrecht (of Violens ) collaborated with Tamaryn for a cover of Turning Shrines 1985 tune ‘1/4 Circle Black’ - reissued on vinyl by Mexican Summer ! Jorge Elbrecht Feat. Tamaryn - '1/4 Circle Black' [...]

One of the more under-the-radar offerings at Record Store Day tomorrow will be a reissue of the Face Of Another , a 1985 EP from Turning Shrines, a side project led by Psychic TV member Fred Giannelli. The reissue will also come with a bonus 73, and it's got Violens frontman Jorge Elbrecht, also a former member of the conceptual synthpop project Lansing-Dreiden, covering Turning Shrines' " 1/4 Circle Black ," with California narco-folkie Tamaryn adding vocals. Got all that? No? Well, the song is a prettily trippy balm for a chaotic afternoon, and you can hear it below. [...]

theantimachinemachine : artwork by moi It’s never a good idea to miss a Tamaryn show.

photos by Amanda Hatfield San Francisco's gothy shoegaze queen Tamaryn just got back from a European tour and was nice enough to stop in NYC before heading home to play a show last night (2/21) at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Joining her were friends Azar Swan (who played a Tamaryn afterparty last year) and Milagres . Did you make it to this show? Both Tamaryn and Milagres say this was their last NYC show [...]

Mixtape: Fourteen Songs about Love for Valentine's Day (Podcast #300) In case you've managed to avoid this news until now, February 14th is Valentine's Day, the greeting card industry holiday that can compel even the least romantic to confront the topic of love. Over the past few years, plenty of our favorite indie rockers have explored the excitement and complications of love in terrific songs. Here, we've collected fourteen tracks about love's many facets, including the swooning romanticism of Real Estate , Cass McCombs , and [...]
Rather late to the game on this one, better late than never though. Released last year, Tender New Signs, is the second album from Tamaryn, the San Francisco based duo of New Zealand singer Tamaryn and guitarist Rex John Shelverton. Tender New Signs seeps out slowly over nine tracks, effortlessly combining the hazy vocals of Tamaryn and soothing tranquil atmospherics into wave after wave [...]
You'll hardly be surprised to know that this isn’t Tamaryn's first foray here. Given our vintage and insatiable appetite for regurgitating the scene that celebrated itself Tamaryn are a near perfect fit. And a contemporary one too, having turned out a note perfect album called 'Tender New Signs' just last year which contained this opus 'Heavenly Bodies'. Despite the kaleidoscope of sound Tamaryn are a mere duo, based in San Francisco and comprised of the eponymous New Zealand singer and guitarist Rex John Shelverton. Their sound fills the air to breaking point and by default results in those dreamy horizon [...]

Tamaryn have managed to hit that sweet spot on Tender New Signs, creating an album sounding unique, and still 100% shoegaze. 6362_06_the_garden.mp3 [...]

With a sound that has been compared to the likes of Grimes (the go-to-girl for convenient comparisons du jour ) and Dirty Projectors (ditto) the abstract sound collages by Empress Of (aka Lorely Rodriguez) is bound to confuse listeners, as much as it does the maker herself! In a musical climate in which everything is filtered and ground down into a palatable, ready-made meal, a little bit of confusion is a welcome relief! Originally from Los Angeles, but now calling Brooklyn home, Rodriguez [...]

Out of all the amazing records that came out this year, we found Laurel Halo's Quarantine to be the most exciting (and can't help but feel sorry for the people who have a problem with those vocals). Julia Holter misses the number one spot second year in a row, but I don't think she'd mind since we both loved Quarantine . Speaking of which, another cool thing about 2012 is that we got to hang with a couple of our favorite acts . Anyway, there were a lot of cool records we enjoyed but just hadn't spent [...]
