Filed under: News , Exclusive , The Hit List , Music Appreciation Brad Barket, Getty This week in music history is all about controversy, conflict and untimely death -- with a little something in the middle of the week to lighten the mood . It's a big week for Motown history, and on the other end of the spectrum we've got Korn and the Dixie Chicks dealing with [...]

The beautiful Tammi Terrell recorded this flawless version of the Stevie-penned "All I Do Is Think About You" for Motown in 1966. Tammi Terrell - All I Do Is Think About You
DJ B-MILK has just crafted one of my most favourite mash-up... ever? It's hard to argue when you can churn Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell into this gem. Check out his bio below and be sure download / "heart it" on hype machine when it gets going. * * * DJ B-Milk began spinning an eclectic blend of Hip Hop, House, RnB, Dancehall, Soca, Mashups, Ghetto Funk, and Techno in 2004 at college parties at Rutgers University in 2004 and shortly thereafter became one of Central Jersey’s most popular house party DJ’s. This is my favorite time of year. For a span of about five-seven years, I would migrate south to Austin for SXSW and that typically meant that it was time for March Madness. I've never filled out a bracket before, just sat on the sidelines while hearing about some 16th seed ruining somebody's bracket. I entered my first bracket challenge, and happy to report that I'm in second place. There's still tons of games to go, but not a bad first day. I really thought CSU was going to finish off Murray St, alas, I chose with [...]
The two most notable deaths in August happened on the same day: the 22nd. I've already paid tribute to Nick Ashford (HERE) ; on the same day that great songwriter passed away, Jerry Leiber died. I don't think it's necessary to go into detail about the Leiber & Stoller story other than to say that they had a crucial impact on the development of rock & roll. Leiber was the lyricist, and as such got Elvis Presley to sing the great line in Jailhouse Rock: "Number 47 said to number 3,'You're the cutest [...]

I was going to post another mix today, but when one of your favourite songwriters dies, priorities take over. And much as I love Jerry Leiber’s repository of great lyrics – he was he Cole Porter of rock & roll – my tribute is for Nickolas Ashford, who with his wife Valerie Simpson wrote, produced and recorded over their career of five decades some of the finest soul music. They deserve a lifetime achievement award alone for that string of wonderful songs they wrote and produced for Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell: Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing, [...]
One half of the celebrated songwriting duo Ashford and Simpson, Nick Ashford leaves behind a "solid" legacy.

Very sad to hear about the passing of Nick Ashford at the age of 70. The Ashford & Simpson (Valerie, his wife) writing partnership spawned a stupendous amount of popular hits for artists such as Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Chaka Khan & oodles more. From 1968 here's Marvin & Tammi doing 'You're All I Need To Get By'. RIP. Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell- You're All I Need To Get By

Yes, yes, we know. Stevie Wonder's catalog really doesn't need to be touched by anyone that's not named Stevie Wonder, though really, does that ever stop anyone's inner spirit from getting filled with joy every time they hear the familiar opening notes to any one of the musical geniuses' lengthy list of treasured classics at the karaoke bar, no matter how much the ballsy person behind the mic ends up being a disappointment? No. File this cover of Wonder's precious Hotter Than July album jam "All I Do" in the (paper-thin) [...]

I must confess that I find it hard to mourn the death of Amy Winehouse. Don’t think of me as a man possessed of a callous heart. Of course the death of a young, talented woman is a cause for sadness. But Ms Winehouse did not die in a tragic accident, as Otis Redding did, nor did a dread disease claim her, as it did Minnie Riperton. Amy Winehouse was a victim of her own excess; she lived a self-destructive lifestyle which first wounded her talent and then (as it appears) ended her life. My empathy is directed at her [...]

Few TV shows ever have so accurately observed the condition of the suburban teenager as The Wonder Years did. One may regard the series, which ran for six seasons (from January 1988 to May 1993), as an exercise in nostalgia. Coming into the middle of a revival that celebrated the 1960s and the beginning of the ’70s, it benefited from fortuitous timing, but as a story of growing up as told by an adult man, the timeframe made perfect sense. Some may accuse the show of [...]
It took two listens for this remix to sink in, but D.O.D managed to flick off a winner in an instant. Containing a most soulful and most remembered sample from Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell’s duet of ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,’ producer/DJ D.O.D unbelievably manages to mould a NO-cheesy winner which sounds even more impactful come 1 minute and 30 seconds in. Devilshly addictive enough to put a smile on all Cadbury's, Hershey and Côte d’Or chocolate-lover-fans faces, then D.O.D’s unsigned bootleg deserves all the love in the world that a [...]

Do you like music? Well this one is a call to action. A temporal mix that hopefully reads more timeless than momentary. A sort of "Music Now!" demand in line with the standout Frightened Rabbit track off their Sings The Greys debut. I always seem to end up with a bunch of late 60s tracks, and the ones on this mix seem to be especially central to the overall gesture. Almost as a challenge to myself after having an argument with a friend on the quality of 80s music, and realizing how few products of the [...]
