Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm, the two halves of the Brooklyn duo Tanlines, don't come from studio-pop. Cohen first came to our attention as the leader of Professor Murder, a clattering and scrappy dance-punk band who figured out, like Liquid Liquid and Radio 4 before them, that postpunk sounds really good when it has a whole shit-ton of percussion; I seem to remember Cohen spending a lot of time blowing a whistle at their live shows. Emm, meanwhile, has roots that go even deeper into the underground; he was a member of the math-addled post-rock bands Don Caballero and Storm [...]

Either we listen to too much music, or there are lots of recognizable artists on this week's short list of new music releases. Okay, perhaps it's just both cases here. We listen to a ridiculous amount of music. This week you could flip a coin to see what we're the most excited for. There are some older names here, but some rising stars as well. Let's just kick it all off with Tanlines who's Mixed Emotions has been buzzing for the past few weeks leading up to today. We're pretty sure you'll like this [...]
I had no 'Mixed Emotions' about this album, just pure happiness. Read more »
Tanlines Mixed Emotions out on 3.20 MP3 | CD | Vinyl | Stream B Mixed Emotions is one of the most vivid break-up albums in recent memory. It actually feels like going through a breakup; it feels, at times, gleefully absurd, but at others, irritating, moody and incomprehensible. Is that a good thing? Depends on how sadistic/masochistic you're feeling when you put the record on. Continue reading: [...]

Fresh from wowing both crowds and critics alike in Austin over the past few days, Tanlines carry forward their SXSW momentum with the release of debut LP Mixed Emotions this week. The New York duo blend electronic pop with dashes of world music - think LCD Soundsystem via Vampire Weekend - and finally feel ready to unleash their full-length record on the rest of us, having first appeared on the scene back in 2010. We caught up with Jesse Cohen for a chat about the album, [...]
The Newark Star-Ledger profiles author Philip Roth. "I find writing is largely an ordeal I have to face every day," he says. "It's a strange occupation. You are on your own. There is no rule book, no casebook. Nothing. … I guess that's what I wanted." Morning Edition profiles the band Tanlines. The duo uses many elements of electronic dance music, but often repurposes them in a poppier context. As an example, Cohen [...]

Tanlines' simple bass-lines and chanted rhythmic choruses leave us a little cold. Their music is a nice fit – major melodies, minimal backing and not overbearing in any way. But it fails to stir us. Maybe it's merely that there's nothing much to offend here. There also the faintest whiff of Christian rock – lovely young men who are helpful and who carry the bags back from the car when mom returns with the shopping. And who can't fail to hear the influence of ska punk in the singing style – there are a lot of "yay-oh" type choruses that [...]

Brooklyn duo Tanlines have flown under many music lovers' radar since their formation in 2009. Granted, the group has only produced a 6-song EP ( Settings , in 2010) and a healthy amount of remixes, but most of their previous works are quite accessible, featuring incredibly upbeat and boisterous beats and samples. Mixed Emotions will be released next week (March 20, via True Panther), and it's difficult for me to imagine the duo not getting a lot of attention moving forward. [...]

Tanlines' debut record Mixed Emotions couldn't have come at a better time of the year. I've been mostly listening to this record whilst out and about, and with the recent sunny spells and teases of Spring in the air, I can safely say 'Mixed Emotions' is undoubtedly the soundtrack to those breezy pre-summer evenings and post-twelve degrees celsius afternoons. Since 2008, the duo – Eric Emm (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Jesse Cohen (drums, keyboards, bass) – have released a wide variety of dance singles across labels such as Young Turks and Kitsuné, but [...]
