I've never been a huge digidub fan. I guess I've never really been a huge dub fan to begin with so that kind of precluded the possibility of getting into digidub. Dub always seems too preoccupied with a kind of stoner melancholia, and digidub sounded too piercingly cheap for me. I certainly haven't sampled enough to stamp the whole genre, but from what I've heard...well lets say maybe I haven't heard enough. The UK based Tapes ' newest 12" called Hissing Theatricals has changed my attitude somewhat. Part of it is that [...]

Some more fantastic tracks this week. A lot of good stuff coming out of Neon Gold these days and I'm still stumbling on some brilliant quirky French bands. This was supposed to be posted this coming Sunday but I'm away so its an early one. Hope you enjoy it. Grab it mixed here . Fresh French band Jolie Cherie ease us in with their track Barcelona . Rhythmic beaty electro-pop is their nature and quirky vocals a staple of their songs. Certainly ones to watch. Their track Star recently featured on the [...]
Alles Creative Commons Musik :) [...]

As you well know from my last post about the geographical influence of my iPod, Berlin is my favourite city in Europe by the same margin that Usain Bolt wins all his races. So this time I'll try and keep it a little lighter than the juggernaut of a post that precipitated from my last pilgrimage to the womb of techno. So I am going to try and keep it really brief:-Thursday: Weekend Club - Chris

Internationally-exhibiting conceptual artist Alyce Santoro has come up with a way to transform the jumbly mess of tape that resides in old cassette tapes into beautiful and durable fabric! Called Sonic Fabric , Ms. Santoro's invention has been spun into shimmery dresses, sparkly umbrellas and sleek ties. And Sonic Fabric isn't just lovely to look at – it makes music too if you run a tape head over it! The Sonic Fabric collection is available at Supermarket . [via Inhabitat ]
Since there's no way of saying their name incorrectly, DD/MM/YYYY are giving all of their fans no way of saying no to seeing their live show this fall, with a month or so of dates all around the US and...

This time last year, I was a fixture in Whelans most weekends; checking out whatever trendsetters crossed the Atlantic with more than an 8.0 from Pitchfork and the Foggy Notions seal of approval. In September 2009, however, things are sadly different. This state of affairs exists on account of me being under house arrest until I submit my monster thesis which is currently 50,000 words and counting. From a live music perspective then, this blog is limited to what I can cover. In other words, as much as I would like to see Dinosaur [...]

by cheryl santa maria From his slick production and catchy lyrics to his pounding bass and supersonic beats, RQM is proving to be an intuitive emcee with an ability to create music that is nothing short of bliss. The up-and-coming artist seems to be everywhere nowadays - he's performed alongside heavyweights like Missy Elliot and M.I.A., he continually pops up on various mix tapes and podcasts and he appears on the intro teaser for Maryanne Hobb's BBC1 show. His latest single, Barely Evil, [...]

Lefse Badass Compilation [zip] Our buddies over at Lefse Records have generously offered up a Free digital compilation for your listening pleasure. They're calling it Fall/Winter 2009. As I'm reluctant to give over to cold gusts and gray skies, I'd rather think of it as a badass collection of songs that will continue to deliver sun-drenched summery goodness all the way through spring and beyond. Focused generally on digital brilliance plus some singer/songwriter fun, the collection includes one of my favorite Neon Indian tracks, Should Have Taken [...]

45 Nano Cases are made from reclaimed cassette tapes, gutted, routered and rebuilt to fit your 4th generation iPod nano. Wicked.
The events which transpired on Saturday were incredibly important to our development as a FMLY. All involved pushed to the limit and certainly over the edge, those who attended were fantastic and respectful guests, and the sounds that were shared thread so deeply into our understanding of community rhythm it is RIDIC! Endless thank yous go out to RipLee, 'REALLY, very', Philip Seymour Hoffman, Best Coast, Haim, [Post-foetus], DJDT, Pizza!, Evan Voytas, Busdriver, Voxtrot, and RJD2 - without your contributions towards our shared experiences the energy created Saturday could not have been accomplished. DFA did us all a favour and committed 'Death Tunnel' to vinyl. This track have been recorded onto analog tape hence the hiss, but that only adds to the mystique and atmosphere of the vibe, which attempts to channel the live and intuitive spirits of Ron Hardy or Adonis' box jamming Chicago sessions with the fiercely linear constructions of Unit Moebius' freak-gang acid house. Gavin Russom largely made his own specialised circuit setup for the recordings, and with a little help from the 707 drumbox he's made an authentically raw tribute to the original box bangers. Big tip! [...]

Two excellent purveyors of tape-hiss and ethereal pop. Ducktails have been getting a fair bit of exposure from blogs like GorillaVsBear and the like, with comparisons that they're a tropical version of Wavves . Ducktails sound like something being broadcast from the middle of a distant heatwave on a far away island. MP3: Ducktails - Backyard Gary War is 60's pop rock sent through [...]
