I'm in the middle of a very heated Wii Sports Tennis tournament, waiting to learn the identity of my opponent. My Mii, named Ev. Ev., will be battling either Eat Me Out or Baby Eat for the...uh...championship. Of something. I haven't lost a single game in my two preliminary matches, so I'm pretty sure I'm the favorite to win. I think the current Vegas line on Ev. Ev. vs. Baby Eat is -220, and the line on Ev. Ev. vs. Eat Me Out is -150. After this paragraph, I'll tell you who won... I bet Baby Eat 3-1. [...]

Not your average Tarentel record, but then again Tarentel isn't really your average band to begin with. The band landed on Temp Res and fit squarely in with the kind of epic rock that tied that stable together in the late nineties but since then they've moved to try on bits of ambience, glacial soundtracks, heavier beats and bits of noise. This limited release for Digitalis, ostensibly would fall closer to the latter two. Assembled from pieces of live performances across Italy and Switzerland, the album removes the band from any associations with slow swells and epic tones. Rattling on [...]

RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. This week's theme is sleeplessness, because I have not been sleeping well the past three nights. Stress at work and stress at home, plus Nicci's being away for the week, has really taken its toll on me. So, [...]

Photo credit: Jelle Baars Over the last couple of years I seem to have grown a much stronger affection for public transportation. I'm not a daily commuter - I can go to work and university by bicycle - but regularly travelling back and forth by train between my hometown and Amsterdam for concerts has convinced me that the social elements of it by far outweigh the advantages of travelling by car. Sure it might be more comfortable and easy to sit behind the wheel yourself and be the captain of your own ship, but [...]

It appears to me that there have been a lot of music posts lately. For those of you who visit this page every day in the hopes of finding a new story detailing how my life has become a downward-spiral complete with embarrassing intoxicated photographs, I guess I have to issue you an apology. Things here at Swan Fungus headquarters have been remarkably quiet lately. In fact, I blame you , valued reader. If even one of you had stepped forward all those times I requested contributing writers through the years, maybe we would have some other insecure whipping [...]

The heat wave continues. I spent all afternoon in the Glendale Barnes and Noble reading various texts to pass the time. The few times I stepped outside I could instantly feel the sun scorching my skin. My car's thermometer measured the air temperature at 108 degrees. I thought that was a little high, but the owner of the market around the corner from my apartment said the one in his store reached 105. I think it's supposed to continue like this for another day or two. I need to find something else to do tomorrow to occupy my mind. If [...]

I don't usually like these phrases, in fact, I hate them, but if you like Trans Am , you could enjoy Tarentel . The We Move Through Weather album is pretty stripped-down work with some ambient floating and even droning going on. Here are two tracks from it and you can also download a live version of A Cloud No Bigger That a Man's Hand (along with a bunch of other live versions) from their site . Download Tarentel - Bump Fast, Cut Up Through Windows (192 kbps, 6,15 mb) [...]

For me it is frustrating that Tarentel isn't better known. Unfairly lumped into the "post rock" genre, the band is fighting a stigma associated with the title. The band's earlier releases, while good, did not help the bands cause. After a line up change the group released We Move Through the Weather and everyone should have taken notice. The band ditched their guitar centered sound and brought in drummer Jim Redd(also plays in Sonna.) His drums take center stage as the band creates droning soundscapes around it. While this may not sound like much, the end result is [...]

One of the albums I've been coming back to these nights is Rameses III 's Matanuska on Music Fellowship . After listening to music for some time during the day, I don't want to hear any beats at night before sleep. However most of the drony/ambient music is either dark and noisy or too new age. There enters Rameses III with a bright & blissful ambience over accoustic guitars/strings. The title track "Matanuska" has a dense middle eastern atmosphere over trilling strings with guitar gestures here and there while the closer "Queen's road cemetery" [...]
