For whatever reason, I hadn't seen sisters Romy and Sari Lightman since their Ghost Bees days. I enjoyed Ghost Bees quite a bit, but simply hadn't gotten around to seeing them again since their rebranding as Tasseomancy . Since then, the sisters have also performed as part of Austra alongside Katie Stelmanis, joining the large number of Toronto musicians (seemingly most of them) who are in more than one band. In their newer incarnation, Tasseomancy have broadened their sound considerably while still keeping the core of what made their sound so interesting to me in the first place. Moments into [...]

Yes indeed the 20th Anniversary Edition of the Halifax Pop Explosion is but a mere week away from starting, and as you can plainly see via the use of an exclamation mark in the title of this post, this is exciting news. If you're in Halifax and reading this, I have to assume you're already planning on attending some or all of the HPX festivities, but what of the folks coming from away? People do come from away for HPX, right (I'd ask for someone to tell us if they're coming to their first HPX [...]

Tasseomancy put together a mix for FWBA and that's exciting for a lot of reasons. Mainly, because they are the first ladies to contribute to the series, and because their mix is fantastic. I've been listening to it all morning. I really want to keep the series going this year, it gives me the opportunity to put all these National Geographic scans to good use! The ladies included tracks from Carly Simon and Kate Bush among others - it seemed to reflect their aesthetic perfectly: otherworldy, synth pop beats, and earthy folk harmonies. If you [...]

Austra: photo by Michael Ligon Kicking off a busier month of concert-going than usual for me these days was Toronto's Austra at the Phoenix Concert Theatre at the beginning of the month. The bigger ticket that night was Feist at Massey Hall but there seemed to be a full-house (if not a sold out one) for the homecoming show for Austra who'd been making waves and touring all year. Doing double-duty that night were twin sisters Sari and Romy Lightman aka Tasseomancy who to me were better known [...]

It was a hectic Ottawa on December 3, 2011. I didn't get to see Austra but I did manage to catch two acts. The first act was Tasseomancy (formerly Ghost Bees ) Never seen them with a backing band. Just say it wasn't dance music. Their set was very indie dark folk-noir music. Apparently they had sound difficulties during the set but manage to pull it off. Very [...]

Incredible sense of deja vu (and depression at the reality of my age) at the Tasseomancy/Young Galaxy/Austra gig the other night. I mean, I was there the FIRST time that awesome Canadian new wave music made the rounds. LOVED it then. All the weirdo indie bands? The Spoons? Martha & The Muffins ("Echo Beach" era)? "Images in Vogue? Moev? Blue Peter? Platinum Blonde? Chalk Circle? Loved. And okay, while the twins in Tasseomancy (Sari and Romy Lightman, who are also in Austra) sort of offer up the more modern/experimental Quiet Coco Rosie thing, Young Galaxy and [...]

Tasseomancy began the night bejeweled in velvet, beads, silk, and plastic tribal bear masks. The masked bassist and of the two twin sisters (on classical guitar) played from folding chairs while the drummer from Austra tweaked knobs and buttons in the back. The style Immediately harkened the playful feminine mysticism of Bat for Lashes, Cocorosie, Cibelle, Stevie Nicks, and Lavender Diamond. And though they risked losing people by singing like choir girls about contemplating snakes, golden flames, and drink, the packed room was transfixed... and remained so until the end. Grimes [...]

by teepoo I love this track. It features the creepy sounding Taylor Kirk from Timber Timbre with the sweet sounds of Tasseomancy . After raising funds from Kickstarter, Tasseomancy released their 2nd album Ulalume in August and it's co-produced by Taylor and Simon Trottier from Timber Timbre. If you didn't know Tasseomancy is also Austra's touring back-up singers. Trippy small world isn't it? Although this song is found on Tasseomancy's album, I find it a little bit Timber Timbre sounding as the girls [...]

Frank Yang Much of Dan Mangan's appeal comes from his everyman-ness - and his beard, if you ask certain friends of mine - so when he was playing the back rooms of bars, as at The Rivoli in October 2009 or The Horseshoe in April 2010 , it felt perfectly natural. Those shows also felt utterly jam-packed - because they were - making it unlikely that the club circuit would be able to serve his ever-growing audience for very long. And so when he played Trinity-St. Paul's in his last proper [...]

Halloween new music special part two: These pages have been full of Tasseomancy in recent months. Not only did we give a fair bit of love to their recently released album, Ulalume , but we’ve also been posting tracks like Soft Feet and Healthy Hands (will mourn you) . Well bloody done us. If you liked that lot then check out their All Hallow’s Eve mixtape below, which features some scary screaming along with songs from Yoko Ono, Nirvana and Leonard Cohen.

Indie folk duo Tasseomancy are a little bit of everything, drawing from the likes of Bjork, mythology, and war drums. Today they released a Halloween mixtape of their favorite eerie tracks, displaying even more influences with mostly female vocals and a whole lot of haunting soundscapes. Check out the Halloween mixtape here: For more Tasseomancy, check out the video for 'Black Milk', filmed at a pool in Reykjavik, [...]

It has been a busy year for Tasseomancy ’s Lightman sisters but as if touring the world with Austra and releasing their own debut album wasn’t enough, the duo have revealed a new song ‘Black Milk.’ Below you can check out a live recording of the new track courtesy of our very own Sébastien Dehesdin who caught up with the pair in Iceland earlier this month. The girls have also put together a special Halloween themed mixtape featuring Leonard Cohen and Broadcast which you can stream below. [...]

Frank Yang It seems a bit counter-intuitive to travel all the way to Iceland to see a bunch of Canadian bands, but then there's also something to be said about the sense of camaraderie one gets from hanging out with one's countrymen in such a foreign setting. So after finally getting to sample some of Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur's famous wares - those are hot dogs, by the by - and a bit of souvenir shopping, Saturday afternoon was largely spent at the Hressingarskálinn cafe where Canadian Blast had pitched a tent to showcase [...]

Tasseomancy is a continuation of what was a bare bones neo-folk duo. Formerly known as Ghost Bees, Canadian twins Sari and Romy Lightman have found a heavier, more ambient sound, ripe with dreamy, dissonant vocals, influenced by eastern song, drone music, phonography and myth. As touring members of the electronic outfit, Austra, they return to their ancestral side with their second full-length album, Ulalume , co-produced and accompanied by Taylor Kirk and Simon Trottier of Timber Timbre, out now on Turf Records. Tasseomancy have expanded its scope to move beyond [...]

Tasseomancy are twins from Toronto. Alliteration. they used to go by the name Ghost Bees, and currently they also sing and perform in Katie Stelmanis' band Austra. The band is described as neo-folk, with a heavier, ambient sound, ripe with dreamy dissonant vocals, influenced by Eastern song, drone music, phonography and myth. The record, Ulalume feels aged and medieval, with stinging organ sounds and acoustic guitars under perfectly blended vocal harmonies that will spook you. The track, "The Darkness in Things" features guest vocals from Timber Timbre, a tender lullaby that strays from his more sinister songs. There [...]

Frank Yang If you have a look over the last couple weeks of posts, you may notice that I've been to a number of shows lately; certainly the busiest stretch in some months. So when I say that to get me out of the house for a late Sunday night show on the other side of town would require something pretty dang special, I mean it. Fortunately or unfortunately, I'm not sure which, The Shop at Parts & Labour was hosting just that. I'd have probably gone if it was just Veronica Falls [...]

Not so long ago we posted a wonderful track from Tasseomancy, called ‘Soft Feet’ . Now we’ve got a remix for you for which we can only say one thing: bassline! It’s by Heidi Mortenson, while the original version of the song is taken from the band’s album ‘Ulalume’ , which we rather liked.
