Tasseomancy put together a mix for FWBA and that's exciting for a lot of reasons. Mainly, because they are the first ladies to contribute to the series, and because their mix is fantastic. I've been listening to it all morning. I really want to keep the series going this year, it gives me the opportunity to put all these National Geographic scans to good use! The bigger ticket that night was Feist at Massey Hall but there seemed to be a full-house (if not a sold out one) for the homecoming show for Austra who'd been making waves and touring all year. It was a hectic Ottawa on December 3, 2011. I didn't get to see Austra but I did manage to catch two acts. The first act was Tasseomancy (formerly Ghost Bees ) Never seen them with a backing band. Incredible sense of deja vu (and depression at the reality of my age) at the Tasseomancy/Young Galaxy/Austra gig the other night. I mean, I was there the FIRST time that awesome Canadian new wave music made the rounds. LOVED it then. All the weirdo indie bands? The Spoons? Martha & The Muffins ("Echo Beach" era)? Tasseomancy began the night bejeweled in velvet, beads, silk, and plastic tribal bear masks. The masked bassist and of the two twin sisters (on classical guitar) played from folding chairs while the drummer from Austra tweaked knobs and buttons in the back. The style Immediately harkened the playful feminine mysticism of Bat for Lashes, Cocorosie, Cibelle, Stevie Nicks, and Lavender Diamond. After raising funds from Kickstarter, Tasseomancy released their 2nd album Ulalume in August and it's co-produced by Taylor and Simon Trottier from Timber Timbre.
