Received an e-mail from Paul Haig the other day, and given that he's been so supportive of this blog in recent times, I think it's only fair and right that I share it with you:- It has been reported in place that the Cathode Ray is a new band formed that I've formed. This is definitely not the case. I've been very busy and wan't fully made aware at all of the developing situation. For reasons of factual accuracy and to save people a lot of wasted energy it is [...]
I have been listening to The Teardrop Explodes' Wilder a bunch lately. It is of course the remastered expanded version that includes the US mini LP Buff Vanilla. This 1981 album, the band's second, is a classic in my books. It is filled with Julian Cope's mad genius in full on psych pop mode. There are songs that deserved to be smash hits, with huge hooks and choruses. There are low key ambient

Bless my cotton sock I'm in the hottest blog section Well my blog rose a little in the stakes of hypem by getting to 2nd on the hottest blog list, for about a day, it's still currently dominated by, I must admit, awesome blog The Tape . I have to celebrate this, once I'm at the top, I'll be happy, but every step closer is something goood. Here's some celebratory music Happy Days Theme Tune Best theme tune ever? The Teardrop [...]

Let me preface by saying that I love White Lies. Ok, so you may have anticipated this won't be the most objective review ever but who cares it'll still be fair. I've been into this band ever since I saw them support Crystal Castles just a week after 'Unfinished Business' was released. I'd heard good things about them but nothing could've prepared me for the performance I saw - it was jaw dropping. Simple yet majestic, dark but ethereal, in much the same way as their debut, coming just 8 months later. But it feels so much longer because we [...]

mrandmrsmays Genre: Alternative / Indie / Punk From: Austin, Texas United States There are some things that just go together well. Eggs and bacon (vegetarian bacon that is!), peanut butter and jam (or jelly for the Devil's American readers), milk and biscuits (cookies for the Devil's American readers). One thing I never thought would go well together is The Cure and Riot Grrrl. [...]

So here I go again, drawing attention to some of the links listed on the right-hand side of this blog in the hope you'll pay them a visit every now and again - I'm sure you'll be entertained. This time round, I'm going to highlight a few things which are not music blogs per se....indeed some of them don't feature any mp3s at all. But they are all wonderful in their own way. Today is a re-letter day at TVV, as at some point the blog is going to receive hit number 200,000. From tracking some basic stats, I've learned that there are three main methods that that folk use to pop by and find out what's happening over here. Number One. They can pick up things via the site aggregators such as Hype Machine or Elbo who simply list the briefest of details of the latest

Those of you based in the UK will know that Liverpool is European Culture Capital this year and to celebrate this (whatever it actually is) I thought I'd stick up a quick little post in honour of our friends up North. I considered basing it around the city's most famous sons, but you can probably get all The Coral songs you like elsewhere. For some reason the late 70s and early 80s saw a Merseyside music scene born that, whilst not as commercially successful as the Merseybeat bands of the 60s, spawned many great bands in its own [...]
While visiting home on a winter break during college, I purchased The Teardrop Explodes ' Wilder on vinyl in a smelly New Jersey record store for a mere three dollars. I had no idea what it was, but it was from 1981, and looked goth enough to pique my interest. For the price of a bottle of hairspray it was worth the gimmick. I was pleasantly surprised to discover genius lyricist Julian Cope through this record. Echo amd The Bunnymen , The Smiths , and early Pink Floyd can [...]
I'm actually early posting this week's mix. Mostly because I'm doing an extra radio show tomorrow-9:30 PM EST at bsrlive.com if you care-and probably won't have time to do this then. The mix mostly sprung from the Stone Roses track because I was reading the chapter about them in the 33 1/3 anthology that came out last fall. Also on this mix: lots of other English men, an original version of a song made popular by the Lemonheads, a cheesy 80's saxophone, and what may be the single silliest song to have [...]
There's a Christmas song on here, but it's a really bleak one. In similarly-related news, if you're in the UK, perhaps you might want to buy the new Malcolm Middleton single today? It's really good, actually. If you like the music, you should use some of your hard-earned money to buy it. If you're in Rhode Island, maybe you might want to do that at Tom's Tracks, which is closing after 23 years on Thayer Street. The whole store's half off. 1. Tom Vek, Nothing But Green Lights [...]
One of the pivotal groups to emerge from the Liverpool neo-psychedelia community during the late '70s, the Teardrop Explodes was a showcase for Julian Cope, a notoriously eccentric figure whose unfashionable love of Krautrock and hallucinogenic drugs set him distinctly apart from the prevailing... At long last, some floral songs. Sorry for the extended absence. Without veering too much into the land of the personal blog ('cause I don't roll like that), I'll say that there's a serious illness in my family, which has kept me away physically and mentally. There won't be a super-sunny outcome, but at least for now, the situation is stable. So I will try to get back into the swing of semi-occasionally writing about music, new words, gnomes, and such, usually whilst adding songs and/or photos that are semi-related on at least some tangential basis to the topic(s) of [...]
