L.A.'s On Off On (Andrew Verner) may have only been making electronic music for the past few years and remixing for only a fraction of that time, but shows us that he's got quite the ear for busting out a good remix or two, as demonstrated here with his remixes of Digitalism (A Missingtoof Exclusive), Tears For Fears , and Stardust (for those of you that don't know, was the one-time musical collaborative effort consisting of producers Thomas Bangalter ( Daft Punk ), Alan Braxe , and Benjamin Diamond ).. First off, I love Los Angeles. LOVE IT. Amoeba Records and those in-store performances? Pure gold. Rich musical history. Great weather. Okay, so my knowledge of L.A. is relegated to a couple quick conversations about the music scene, a weekend-long bender and hands-down one of the best record stores in the country, but suffice to say it has made quite the impression on me. One thing I can concede to from keeping an ear to the underground is that there's nothing short of a deluge's worth of "personal agenda" floating around out [...]

Today it's one for the ladies. Get another track off the Scarlett Johansson album before it's deleted. Ivy "Digging Your Scene" (Blow Monkeys Cover) Leaky Chipmunk "Our Secret" (Beat Happening Cover) Clare & The Reasons "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" (Tears For Fears Cover) The Last Town Chorus "Do You Really Wanna To Hurt Me" (Culture Club Cover) Scarlett Johansson "I Wish I Was In New Orleans" [...]
When the British duo Tears For Fears emerged from the UK in 1983, they garnered considerable critical attention with their fusion of art school sensibilities, synth-driven angst, and ambitious lyrical themes. It shouldn't have been too surprising as Roland Orzabel and Curt Smith had taken their name from a form of psychotherapy. It didn't translate into mainstream success, though (at least not in the States). Although their debut The Hurting did produce a couple minor hits with Change and Pale Shelter , the songs didn't crack the Top 40 and were more embraced [...]

This was prompted by the rather wonderful new M83 track 'Kim & Jessie' which was obviously directly inspired by all things adolescent and 1980s. There's been a bit of a non-ironic 80s revival going on lately with stuff like Neon Neon par example. Before that we had Donnie Darko and its distinctive soundtrack which is referenced on the Saturdays=Youth cover art along with The Breakfast Club . Whether your cheese of choice is Rico Mambo , ' Live to Win ', ' We Built this City ', [...]

Okay, we haven't had an update in a few days, which usually makes Kip nervous. And when The Chief is nervous, I get nervous. As I have nothing particularly thrilling to write about at the moment, I'm just going to do a little news roundup. News: Private collector places over 3,000,000 records & 300,000 CD's up for sale. Starting bid is $3 million. [ The Daily Swarm ] Perhaps inspired by Daft Punk & Kanye, Klaxons are set to back [...]

Those among you who follow the comics internet must have heard that Steve Gerber, legendary comics writer and the creator of Howard the Duck passed away last Sunday at the age of 60. Instead of rehashing what other internet comics commentators have covered (and will cover) with more detail and eloquence (Mike Sterling has a nice rundown of the man's contributions ), I figured I'd pay my respects by spotlighting a story of his that made a strong impression on a young Andrew and illustrates Gerber's particular talents. The Guardians of the Galaxy were Marvel's answer to [...]
"Monday Monday, can't trust that day. Every other day of the week is fine, yeah, but whenever Monday comes (but whenever Monday comes) you can find me cryin' all of the time." - The Mamas & the Papas Here is EAR FARM's cure: some nicely arranged, melancholic yet upbeat, New Wave music to mend those Monday blues. Or wash away those blue Mondays, as it were. Click below to download and listen to EAR FARM's New Wave Cure For A Serious Case Of The Mondays Mix. [...]
The Colt.45s Let's Have An Accident (Filthy Little Angels) The long awaited, well by this Devil anyway, debut album by The Colt.45s is finally released and it was well worth waiting for. Painfully honest lyrics that chronicle life in and around their Durham base skate over a DIY punky clatter evoking the spirit of 1977 with a world weary edge. From the bleak and sinister 'I Love [...]
I cannot tell a lie; this is not my favorite Mayer tune. Having said that though, I gotta say that the sentiment behind it just knocks me out. I'm long on two things...legs and words. Ironically my Grandfather happens to be a man of very few of the latter. He's been very sick for a very long time and as we near the twilight of his time here with us in the physical world I've been helping
In an alternative world yesterday's announcement would have run something along the lines of the following: "Huge pirate music site legitimised and integrated in new BFI distribution network." "Users encouraged to keep torrents open to distribute obscure content for credit and first listens to new work." "24-year-old man from Middlesbrough given 'Extremely lucrative' position as new music distribution method administrator reporting to Shawn Fanning, head of IFPI." I'm not an artist, merely someone that likes music to the point where I like to share it with anyone that is willing to listen. [...]

(photos from exploring more abandoned buildings, more here ) It's always strange how time seems to stand still when you are wandering around inside an abandoned building, regardless if it's day or night . ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ MP3: This seems somewhat appropriate for this post, in a weird way. • Tears For Fears - Pharaohs A band's place in myspace .
Awhile back I was asked to contribute to the fourth installment of the Song/Context/Result feature that runs over at the always excellent music blog Music Is Art . The gist of the whole thing was explained as, "Tell me about a moment, a song, and what it meant to you." Here's mine: Song: Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World Songs From The Big Chair Context: It's the summer of 1985. I'm only [...]
Okay, this post is kind of random and odd. And unless you are die-hard BH Surfers fan or Tears For Fears fanatic it's probably not your thing. School's a mother, so I didn't have time to finish up some big finds I scored last weekend. You'll see them soon. Butthole Surfers The Hurdy Gurdy Man (Jim Melly Re-Mix) I don't think I ever have to do acid now, this song has to be the equivalent. I never knew this was a cover until about a year ago, how sad is [...]
David Bowie turns 60 today. Terry Gross had a nice snippet of an interview with the ageless rocker on Fresh Air which reminded us for some reason of this scene from the BBC show, Extras (Season 2 begins airing on HBO this Sunday). Fat waste of space, indeed. Listen to Ashes to [...]

Why am I starting out the new year by posting something from last year? Well, I've gotten so many requests to repost these tracks that I figured I'd give you kids what you've been asking for. Actually, I just might run through some of my other old posts and see which ones people were saddest/angriest that I took down and put those back up, too. We'll see how I'm feeling. I have a real weakness for 80s movies and one of my favorites is [...]
Reissues are some of the best things out there. While the things aren't released by the boatload, the few albums which are reissued usually come packaged with some stellar bonus material. Besides the perks of the supplemental materials, it's nice to be reminded of an album or a particular artist that you haven't listened to in a while. Hopefully 2007 will see as many great reissues that 2006 saw. The Head on the Door is definitely my favorite Cure album, if only because it's so different from the others released in this period.
