A new product called Alert has been announced in the UK, which is a portable device that tests for airborne asbestos particles and gives results in real time. In most instances, testing a building's air for asbestos can be a long endeavor, which either means that individuals cannot remain in the building until results come back, or that individuals could be unknowingly exposed to asbestos fibers in the air. Fortunately, this incredible device will allow for fast results, allowing individuals to remove themselves from a potentially dangerous environment as soon as possible. Asbestos is a fibrous [...]

Not sure what's more impressive: that Yahoo has rescued and improved the beleaguered photo sharing site under Marissa Mayer or that it now comes with one TB of free storage space . Every other photo sharing site - Facebook/Instagram and Google, particularly - are now playing catch-up. For the first time in a long time, it feels like Flickr is ahead of the pack, invested in its own success, and innovating. That makes me want to resign-up for the service.
Mat Honan perfectly captures the good and bad of Google after spending four-hours live-blogging its I/O keynote.
Spending $1.1 billion for Tumblr seems like a coup for Yahoo. Tumblr gets its exit strategy without worrying about how to actually make money and Yahoo gets the youth street cred it was sorely lacking. The big question that is yet unanswered is whether Yahoo will muck this up like most of its acquisitions or can they treat Tumblr similar to how Facebook has treated Instagram? If it's more like the latter, then this will be a good thing for both. Time will tell.

"Internally the project was code-named Project Acela, a reference to the high-speed train between Boston and Washington. A team led by Albert Cheng, Ms. Sweeney’s executive vice president for digital media, was given a deadline of May 14, the date of the ABC upfront. While Apple devices came first, other phones and tablets will be supported in the coming months, Mr. Cheng said. Securing the necessary rights from programming providers was laborious, but ABC will be able to stream all of its stations’ local newscasts, syndicated talk shows like “Katie,” and national series like “Grey’s Anatomy.” The live-stream functionality comes [...]

Betaworks describes itself as "a company that builds companies," but really it's a start-up incubator and the most interesting media technology company at the moment. Lately, it has scooped up a bevvy of smaller companies. We know they are working on a Google Reader replacement . It bought the much-maligned Digg last year and gave the site a nice facelift, doing the impossible - it revived a dead corpse and made it better. Last month, the company bought a majority stake in Marco Arment's [...]

I was listening to Quadrophenia this morning and was struck that while it's running time exceeds that of a single CD it never feels overly long. Then I thought about recent albums from any number of bands that decided to employ every second of space afforded by a CD (or, even beyond into the digital realm that literally has no time imitations). Those, almost without fail, actually make you grow annoyed with the band as they overstay their welcome. In a day and age where every album seems to require a "deluxe edition" with another 15-30 minutes worth [...]
Reddit was one of Y Combinator's first successful start-ups back in 2005. Now, the site, which appropriately bills itself as the front page of the Internet, has become one of, if not, the most influential sites in the world because it's a community, but also "the crib sheet for weary bloggers who need to hit page-view quotas," as Simon Dumenco so aptly puts it. Basically, if you read it on Gawker or BuzzFeed, chances are it was on Reddit the day before. If you are watching a goofy video on the local news or [...]
A few things I learned from this article on Silicon Valley's start-up incubator Y Combinator : If you're over 32, don't even think about trying to be the head of a start-up. Investors are skeptical of any idea from older people, probably because they have the life experience to run their company how they want to and not how the investors would like. "Among the eight start-ups that graduated Y.C.’s first class, in the summer of 2005, were the social-news site Reddit, recently valued at [...]

Before Kanye West ever got his hands on "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger," hip-hop all-stars had made use of Daft Punk 's robotic sound. Dating back to 2005, Busta Rhymes found the duo's "Technologic" to sample for the lead single from his album The Big Bang. Produced by Swizz Beats, "Touch It" contains a snippet of the original's vocal, used as the chorus to support Busta's verses. Properly crediting Thomas and Guy-Man, "Touch It" is one of the few noteworthy Daft Punk samplings in hip-hop. You just finished reading Weekend Rewind: Busta Rhymes [...]
Last month Native Instruments released their first mobile Traktor DJ app for the iPad. After much success, the NA team has decided to release a version for the iPhone as well. With a revamped interface for the tiny screen, the app comes fully packed with features that are seen in its big brother such as crossfading, FX, EQ, and cue point abilities. You can even sync to your iTunes or Dropbox library to access songs and store content. Mobile and pocket DJs are becoming quite popular nowadays as DJing is becoming easily accessible in many creative ways. [...]
I've been testing a lot of Google Reader replacements ever since Google announced it was sun-setting the application . One thing is clear: Reader was damn good; it's a shame it didn't fit in Google's business plan; and, it will be missed greatly. All of the replacement services I tested suffer from one glaring deficiency - speed. Reader was instant when switching feeds, having them update, etc. There's a lag to most Reader replacement services that probably results from not having Google's infrastructure or engineering teams . Once you get over [...]
Paul Miller ends his one-year Internet sabbatical : I guess those first months felt so good because I felt the absence of the pressures of the internet. My freedom felt tangible. But when I stopped seeing my life in the context of "I don't use the internet," the offline existence became mundane, and the worst sides of myself began to emerge. I would stay at home for days at a time. My phone would die, and nobody could get ahold of me. At some point my parents would get fed up with wondering [...]
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings wrote an 11-page essay that lays out his vision for the future of streaming video. All Things D's Peter Kafka has summarized most of his assertions . There are a few big takeaways for me about where Netflix might be heading and where the future of the industry might be as well. Apps replace channels, is a common sentiment among many. The problem is people aren't cutting the cord and channels have no incentive to turn their business into an app. Maybe ESPN would if they [...]
