Birth of a Star from Tom Lowe on Vimeo . "This movie presents a visualization of the star-forming region known as S106. This unique three-dimensional view illustrates and emphasizes that many of the objects contained within astronomical images are not at the same distance, but, in fact, spread across light-years of space. The Hubble image is augmented with additional field-of-view from the Subaru Infrared Telescope. The stars and the lobes of glowing gas from the Hubble/Subaru two-dimensional image have been separated and sculpted using both scientific knowledge and artistic license to create [...]

Last year, around this time actually, we wrote about a USB Power Outlet from Fast Mac . Now, according to the New York Times there's another USB power outlet offering . This one comes from " Power2U " and will set back consumers $30. The outlets are UL-certified for use on a 15 amp 125 volt circuit. The company said the outlet was compatible with iPads, iPhones, iPods, Android tablets and phones, tablet computers, cellphones, game systems like Nintendo, Sony and PlayStation, Bluetooth headsets, digital cameras and GPS devices that charge through a standard USB [...]
Saw this on MTV earlier and it's so bad. Normally, we keep it positive about the musics, but this song and video are ridiculous. Will.i.am is like junk food for music. Think about all the reasons you wouldn't eat junk food then think about this song and how weak sauce it is. Will.i.am was working on a business deal with Universal Music Group and we heard he's a fairly opinionated dude. Not just like strong convictions, but opinionated in a pretentious way. Don't ask how we know that. Will.i.am shouldn't have to tell us how hard the beat [...]

I wasn't into the whole techno scene back in '05, but I sure as hell remember Daft Punk's "Technologic." I may not have appreciated it that much back when, but I loved the flow of the words. In Scary Toys remix of the "Tecnologic" classic, the bass buzzer goes nice with Daft Punks witty little one liners. Love the choice they made & the style they presented it. Scary Toys Members: Luciano Ferreira & Pedro Lintz Location: Belo Horizonte , Brazil Scary Toys on: [...]

Eric Fischer has been using available location data to map Twitter traffic of major cities . The results are a "beautiful cartographic representations of our information flow," writes Josh Weinland at Clusterflock . The image above is of New York and it's fascinating how much Twitter traffic in a major city resembles a nervous system or the map of an older population center driven by available waterways. Other metropolitan areas seem to clustter around major roads and transit ways, except for Chicago.

So, it has been a while since we dropped the first version of our simple iPhone theme: available free at the Cydia store (available on jailbroken devices). With the higher resolution of iPhones and iPads, the theme was long due for an update. It consists of a photo of a site model, Ashlee Nicole, as well as a handful of replacement system sounds to make your phone sound less like the exhausted default. The use of iDevice-especially iPhone-sounds is getting pretty rampant in various forms of entertainment, and don't you find it annoying to think maybe you just got a [...]

Electro producer Ftampa, the man who brought you the epic remix of Avicii's Levels , has apparently taken a couple of his close friends under his wing with the result being Scary Toys. As expected, the sound is still pretty similar to that of Ftampa's yet its got their own take on the up and coming Brazilian electro style. But not to mention it takes some huevos to remix Daft Punk. They leave just enough of the original track to take us back before breaking it down into some funky glitch filled bass! Turn it up and enjoy this [...]
Andy Baio just published his annual look at the piracy of Oscar-nominated movies . First, the good news: "A record 37 films were nominated this year, and the studios sent out screeners for all but four of them. But, so far, only eight of those 33 screeners have leaked online, a record low that continues the downward trend from last year." But, wait: "While screeners declined in popularity, 34 of the nominated films (92 percent) were leaked online by nomination day, with 25 of them available as high-quality DVD or Blu-ray rips. Only three [...]
If you're concerned about online privacy, take heed: you're certainly not the only one. Although there may be some comfort in numbers, that all falls by the wayside when someone gets a hold of your financial accounts. Online privacy is such a concern because it really is so important. The data that is stored on us online is enough fro someone to be able to assume our identity , steal our money and ruin our credit. Some people might tell you that you're just being paranoid; millions of people shop online safely every day. But, (on the [...]
Dan Seitz, over at Uproxx, offers media companies five easy steps to help curb piracy . Seitz' five steps are fairly obvious to anyone following the trend of technology/piracy/media consumption, which someone in the music/movie/publishing industry has already thought of them. That, however, begs the question of why has no one implemented a decent plan? Seitz argues media industries just need digitize everything as quickly as possible, move to a tiered pricing model, reject DRM or anything else restricting the use of digital content, and work with customers. Look, not to put too [...]

The Unity Home Theater platform ($999, due mid-2012) simplifies installation and operation, reduces the equipment footprint and does so in an aesthetically appealing and affordable design. It solves current integration issues that consumers typically encounter with home theaters such as confusing cable nests, scattered components, complex installation requirements and multiple remotes. Todd Beauchamp, president of parent company In2Technologies started the company after heading one of Apple's Audio Labs where he worked on iPhone development and other devices. The all-in-one home [...]
1. Jalopnik argues compellingly that the " check engine light " in cars "keeps car owners in the dark about the condition of their vehicle, and ensures they stay dependent and subordinate to car dealers and mechanics." 2. Is cooking an art? Or are there fundamental mathematical principles underlying great cooking ? 3. Amazon is considering spinning off their Instant streaming video service (currently free with a $79 Amazon Prime subscription) into a standalone service to better compete with Netflix. (This could be a good move, but it would [...]

Last month, YouTube underwent a redesign with a focus on the social elements of subscriptions and playlists. But really, not much changed. Vimeo, on the other hand, has focused its redesign on the experience of watching videos . Vimeo's new video pages are optimized for viewing with a 960×540 video player at the top and related info — comments, likes, tags, etc. — hidden below the fold. For viewers who want to navigate other related videos, Vimeo has added a tab for "More Videos" that unveils related videos along the top of the page. By [...]
Boxee has just updated their media player device (I love their Windows media player even if I find it ultimately superfluous) to offer the ability to stream live television . The downside is you'll have to buy a $50 dongle to plug into the device and a set of digital rabbit ears ($15) to get broadcast channels. Still, this is a nice step for those looking to cut the cable cord. What would be nice is to see Boxee put all of these offerings into one device. Just build a nice box that has an antenna, [...]

This is a demonstration video showcasing Scott Garner's interactive still life project . It involves a motion-senstive frame that feeds realtime tilt data to a 3D scene.
Twitter bought Summify and shut down the service immediately until it can be integrated. Andy Baio suggests trying Percolate , which is very similar. Summify is essentially a next-generation news delivery platform. Here's why this acquisition by Twitter matters : What Summify does is essentially stand in front of your firehose, collect the drops of water that are news-related, and then fill up a nice, tidy cup for you containing only (or mostly) news. You can tell Summify you want a tall, a grande, or a venti and the platform [...]

I have heard rumblings that there is a MASSIVE LAW that is being talked about in some sort of branch of the government that is trying to make websites and blogs and the majority of the content on the internet COMPLETELY ILLEGAL. I was reading up about SOPA, trying to exactly who it would impact. Here are the hard facts on SOPA, how it works, and how your life will be forever changed in the SOPA world. ALL MUSIC BLOGS WOULD BE BREAKING THE LAW Did u know that 100% of music [...]
It doesn't appear to be connected to yesterday's SOPA protests , but this is pretty significant anyway : The Federal Bureau of Investigation moved against a group of suspected online pirates Thursday, targeting the popular file-sharing website megaupload.com a day after Washington lawmakers were besieged by complaints about legislation designed to crack down on the online sharing of pirated copies of music, movies and other material, people familiar with the matter said. Investigators said there was no connection between arrests in their two-year investigation and the political firestorm that erupted this [...]
