Ted Leo / photo by David Greenwald In addition to LA Font's show at Bordello tomorrow, a few more worth your while this week: The Radio Dept. plays a sold-out gig at the El Rey, its first ever in L.A., on Wednesday; '80s acolytes MINKS join Generationals, Black Apples and Shadow Shadow Shade on Thursday at the Satellite; and Ted Leo plays a free, solo session at the Mondrian SkyBar on Saturday. More dates, as always, on the ongoing show calendar ; look for my pre-show interview with the [...]

When the Pixies toured through Seattle a few years ago, it was astounding how many of their fans had grown up and had little rock and roll miniatures. The evidence was running around in black-clad, angst-loving circles late into the night. Not so for fans of [...]

Ted Leo has been in the game for awhile, but I have not been up on his post-punk madness. He throws in a little bit of every genre that includes a guitar, but on his 6th album he drives towards a mature, major-melody alternative rock. The result? A blunt and direct sound that isn't changing lives, but catchy enough to be one of my most listened to songs of the month. The Mighty Sparrow - Ted Leo

SD favorites Pinback will perform their first two albums in their entirety at the Casbah. Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

[Chart toppers Superchunk live at Royale, Boston, MA. 9/21/2010. Photo by Michael Piantigini. More here .] Here it is, New Year's Eve, and I'm finally turning in my year-end list. TO MYSELF! As you may have read , El Jefe Jay Breitling will be on hiatus for a few months tending to undercover work for his secret, non-blogging identity and I'll be attempting keep up with the entire universe of music (or at least some subset thereof) for the duration. I appreciate Jay's trust that I won't turn this into some weirdo NFL coach-spouse [...]

It's that time of year again. The time where you look at all the great music released in the past 365 days and narrow it down to the best 10. I listed the Top 10 albums that made some great listening experiences. No Richmond-based artists are on here. That will be coming in another post. TED LEO & THE PHARMACISTS - THE BRUTALIST BRICKS Ted Leo's newest album was a surprise for me since I haven't really enjoyed the last few releases, but The Brutalist Bricks brings back what makes Ted [...]

Well, the year is over -- didn't see that coming. If there's one thing I can say about 2010, it's that it was the best and most productive year Mixtape Muse has had since it was born back in 2006. I'd like to thank all the artists, bands, and readers who helped make this year so awesome and successful. I would have never thought Mixtape Muse could have accomplished so much in a year. So, thank you all. Now, my choices for the top albums of 2010. Oh, the year-end list. It's just a troublesome thing. Are we [...]

Seeing how our staff has distinct tastes and opinions on music, it would be nearly impossible for us to determine a 10 Albums of 2010 list as a single entity without excessive bloodshed. Therefore in the next two weeks, we'll be posting multiple Top 10 Albums of 2010 lists as determined by Loud Loop Press editors and contributors. Today, Associate Editor Audrey Leon takes us to school with her list for Top 10 Albums of 2010. 10. Spoon - Transference [...]
Matt's favorite records include Superchunk and Screaming Females. Check it out!
Dustin's favorite records from 2010 include Nobunny, So Cow and more.

Brett Dean is our resident photographer here at Mixtape Muse. Although he hasn't had any work featured on the site since joining the team a few months ago, I can assure you that you'll be seeing some of his live photography work in 2011. He asked me to post his choices, which you can scope after the jump. Please note that all the blurbs accompanying each selection were written by Brett, not me. Maybe we can get him to write a few pieces for the site, too, down the road. [...]

End of the year list time. My favorite time of year. Yes, there are plenty of the usual suspects, but I'm pushing 40 and that's what we old people do...hang onto the past. So with further ado, Song 20 - 11 of my top 20 tracks of 2010. Enjoy. fig 1. Lissie 20. Lissie - Bad Romance [...]
20. BEST COAST | Crazy For You [Mexican Summer] The subject matter on Best Coast's first album is largely limited to boys and the occasional shout-out to beloved pet cats and weed. In a radical departure from her earlier work with Pocahaunted, frontwoman Bethany Cosentino takes this restricted thematic palette and runs with it. Crazy [...]

Wow. It's been a while since I dropped my last mixtape. It's seems like forever ago that we were saying goodbye to Summer , since now all I can think about are my freezing cold toesies. Enter the All Things Go Workout Mixtape Disc 2; here to get rid of your post-Thanksgiving pudge and complement the first edition which you hopefully have been pumping since June. This second installment was crafted back in July, but I've been so busy with the new site and school and whatnot that I never got around to posting it. No more [...]

Guess it's a week to talk about comebacks from the world of hip-hop, as Lauryn Hill has announced a ten-date Northeast tour that will kick off at the Higher Ground in Burlington, VT on December 18. The semi-reclusive Hill, who is rumored to be working on the long-awaited follow up to her seminal debut The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill , emerged this past summer to play a handful of shows as part of the Rock The Bells tour to favorable reviews. Hill will focus [...]

I've long considered myself a fan of Ted Leo and whatever band he happens to bring around, but it's really only with his latest album The Brutalist Bricks that I've actually realized just how much I like Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. I loved Shake The Sheets from 2004 and liked 2007's Living With The Living but found it a bit too sprawling and overlong. The Brutalist Bricks is anything but; it's tighter, more focused, and noticeably shorter than Living... . It's an album [...]

Terminal 5 might be the most hated venue in all of Manhattan, but it does manage to draw some pretty great bills and Monday was no exception. Music's most unappreciated man delivered a blistering opening set, while Canadian super rockers The New Pornographers followed with a glamorous hour and 45 minute performance. So, yeah, by night's end, who really cares if we're watching in what is otherwise a glorified warehouse across the street from a Lexus dealership? Really, Ted Leo is music's most unappreciated man. His 15-year-plus discography is filled with one punk pop gem after [...]
