Frank Yang Understatement? This has been a very fucked weekend in Toronto . From the moment it was announced late last year that downtown Toronto would host the G20 summit of world leaders this last weekend in June, it has been an inevitability that things would turn out this way - an overwhelming police presence on city streets to greet masses of protesters and demonstrators who acted as camouflage for small groups of so-called anarchists set on turning things violent and wreaking mayhem - all while the world leaders met behind massive fences, oblivious to [...]

We really try to keep things hyperlocal to Chicago here on LoudLoopPress.com , but occasionally there are cool happenings two and a half hours south of our fair city. Champaign-Urbana's Pygmalion Music Festival returns for it's sixth year this September 22 - 25 and offers a pretty wicked lineup. Just a little more than a week ago, the festival announced the additions of indie stalwarts Built To Spill , punk elder statesman Ted Leo and the Pharmacists , indie power rockers Surfer Blood , Canadian psych outfit Holy Fuck [...]

Frank Yang NXNE has quite thoroughly kicked my ass, so you'll forgive me if this week's selection falls under the category of quick and easy. But hopefully still satisfactory. And why wouldn't it be? There are few better go-to guys for covers than Ted Leo , who seemingly hasn't met a song from any genre that he's not prepared to take a swing at if it's a good tune. And there are few bands who've wrote more good/great songs that have been - and deserve to be - covered ad infinitum than [...]

This clip has been up for a while, but we just stumbled upon it after the recommendation of a friend. In short, it is a positively stellar version of Tears For Fears' classic "Everybody Wants To Rule The World", covered by the amazing Ted Leo . The song is unquestionably delivered in Leo's signature style, but in this case that's a very good thing, and it isn't hurting things one bit that the song is killer as well. The track is part of an ongoing project by the Onion AV [...]

West coast music festival #3 to announce its 2010 lineup today is the Portland, Oregon based Musicfest NW . The four-day extravaganza, set to take place from September 9-12, is sort of Bumbershoot (in terms of its lineup) meets South by Southwest (in terms of its set up). In all, 160 bands will play 17 clubs across downtown Portland during the four days. The Decemberists and Spoon will headline this year's festivities with performances at the historic Pioneer Courthouse Square on September 11th and 12th, respectively. Other heavyweights set to perform include Okkervil River, Major [...]

We previously announced that this year's Siren Festival down in Coney Island will feature acts like Matt & Kim, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Surfer Blood, and Harlem . Yesterday, the five new acts that were announced included Earl Greyhound, Cymbals Eat Guitars, The Night Marchers, Screaming Females and Wye Oak . The festival itself will take place on July 17th for the wonderful price of FREE. Come out, enjoy the sun, enjoy the music ... have a Nathan's hot dog Coney Island style. -Mangtooth [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Jimmy Cliff was on NPR while I was driving home today (audio here ). There was a connection to the Chris Coke thing, but I think Jimmy was there principally to remind NPR listeners that he's got a new record dropping and a brief US tour on the horizon. And to remind Marco Werman that he (Jimmy) is the truth. All told, it was nice to hear some reggae during my afternoon rush hour news fix. Among the obvious Harder [...]

MP3: Screaming Females - "Arm Over Arm" Screaming Females have been on the road for the better part of 2010 touring with Ted Leo and headlining their own shows as well. The next batch of tour dates from the guitar shredding act continue suit with some scheduled with Mr. Leo and his Pharmacists and some have them headlining. The full list of dates is after the jump. Screaming Females tour dates: Dates marked * w/ Ted Leo and the Pharmacists [...]

Hey ironic mustaches! Can you focus on the music and less on your retro brown pants? I dig the tats but those will get saggy in due time. I dig openness but most of you will get conservative soon too but what will last is your attention to music and your legacy. Not going to directly slag your scene but this year yet again The Oldsters are kicking music's punkless-asses all over Fulton Street like a sober pathetic drunk. It should be an all out knife fight with the jukebook but it mostly sounds like a tuneless teen [...]
Ted Leo & The Pharmacists have been confirmed to play this year's Siren Festival . The band will play the 10th annual festival which is set to take place July 17 at Coney Island in Brooklyn. Surfer Blood and Matt And Kim are also set to play the bash. For more information go to Siren.villagevoice.com .

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists' latest full-length (and first for Matador) turns back from the relative sprawl of 2007's eclectic Living with the Living and finds the rocker playing to his strengths: melody-minded post-punk dispatches blasted fast and loud. "The Mighty Sparrow" kicks things off with Leo's reliable power-chord heat, but the album never cools down - the catchiest hooks come early ("Ativan Eyes," "Even Heroes Have to Die") but the brisk collection bristles with inspiration from front to back. Ted Leo - "The Mighty Sparrow": mp3 Ted [...]

"In all fairness, it's better than another "crystal" or "wolf" band…" - Ted Leo (via @TedLeo ) Ted Leo tweeted this over the weekend, and I've been laughing about it since. ------- I've been sitting on two amazing covers that Ted performed back in October at the Matador/ True Panther 2009 CMJ party at the Suffolk...it's not too often you get to see a Melvins cover and a Stiff Little Fingers cover in the [...]

The Village Voice just announced the initial lineup for the 10th Annual (free!) Siren Music Festival . It kicks off at noon on July 17, and it sounds like our fond memories of the past will be replicated once again. The list thus forth includes Matt & Kim, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Surfer Blood, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart and Harlem. Wait a minute... we like all of those bands. A lot. There are few things more adorable in this world than the thought of Matt and Kim serenading one another as the sun sets on Coney [...]
As has been the case in recent years, the Siren Music Festival will provide New York City with an indie friendly alternative to Chicago's Pitchfork Music Festival . Presented by the Village Voice, the July 17th event takes places the same weekend as P4k Fest and features a number of rising indie acts, including Matt & Kim, Surfer Blood, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Harlem. Oh, and did we mention it's free? And that it takes place at an amusement park, aka Coney Island? Sweetness. Additional acts [...]
