Ted Leo is a busy guy. Now add interviewer to his list of credits. Doing a strong job for IFC, he talked with several celebs at SXSW. The list includes, Liz Phair, Billy Bob Thornton, J. Mascis, Emmylou Harris, and...
SXSW 2011 came and went - we have the portraits to prove it - but it doesn't mean those days in Austin aren't still spitting out worthwhile mementos... Like Fred Armisen before him , Ted Leo interviewed a bunch of folks while he was down in Austin. Unlike Armisen, he takes it fairly seriously, a seriousness pays off with some good insights about lazy journalism, etc. See how he does with Liz Phair, Michael Stipe, and J Mascis. It was for IFC. J Mascis at a BV Day Party during SXSW ( more by Chris Gersbeck ) "Midway through J Mascis ' set, the seasoned headliner invited Kurt Vile , opener and contributor to the former's most recent acoustic album, Several Shades of Why , to accompany on the song "Make it Right." As they shared the stage, a sense of mutual respect pervaded the room... ...From a seated position, [Mascis] occasionally glanced at a music stand holding a lyric book, but, most often, known guitar riffs took precedence over words. "I Guess I Planted" was an unfinished Woody Guthrie track that Wilco and Billy Bragg recorded as part of their Mermaid Avenue sessions. "Planted" is a decidedly pro-union song, one of a few in Guthrie's repertoire, so it makes sense that the oft-politically minded Ted Leo chose to re-record the Mermaid Avenue version of "I Guess I Planted" to show his support for the unions whose collective bargaining rights are the subject of debate in Wisconsin. The video above shows Leo doing his best basement YouTube version on acoustic guitar, and dude [...]

Photo by Philip Cosores Like John Darnielle before him , Ted Leo has recorded a union-supporting track in solidarity with the Wisconsin situation that is seeing collective bargaining stripped from the people of the state. Whatever side of the issue you fall on, we can all agree that this is re-sparking the folk tradition of protest songs. The track, a cover of the Mermaid Avenue cut, was performed both acoustically and electrically and below we have the electric MP3 and the acoustic video. Enjoy. [...]

Ted Leo & Michael Stipe @ IFC House during SXSW " Big Star 's third album, Third/Sister Lovers , has long been revered by artists and critics as one of the most influential albums ever produced. Written and recorded when the legendary 70s band was primarily a studio project consisting of Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens , the third album was never been performed in public with the original string and wind orchestrations. That changed in December 2010, when an all-star band unearthed the original scores, assembled an orchestra and performed Big [...]

photos by Timothy Griffin Evan Voytas Lady Lamb the Beekeeper "When you've got a demure woman on the microphone and she can go from a soulful refrain to a heightened howl in the matter of a minute, you know you're in the presence of someone special. I don't know if "special" quite cuts it when it comes to describing Aly Spaltro, aka Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, but she was the definition [...]

Another year, another SXSW Music survived. It's crazy, it's five days of no sleep and eating on the run. But then you see that new band that knocks your socks off, or start chatting with that established musician whose music you've always loved on the street as you race from one venue to another, and no matter how tired you are, you know you're coming back next year. Watch: Sharon Van Etten - "All I Can" (New Song) Sharon Van Etten's forthcoming Aaron Dessner- produced LP won't likely reach our ears until after her extensive year of touring wraps in September at the Hollywood Bowl alongside Neko Case and The National, but here's a gorgeous new tune while we wait: "All I Can," performed at an IFC-sponsored show last week at SXSW. You can watch another clip from this performance, as well as Ted Leo interviewing Van Etten, Doug Keith, and friends, here . (Via From Go [...]

photos by Amanda Hatfield ""I write from a painful place," [ Sharon Van Etten ] recently told SPIN of the inspiration behind her latest release, the seven-song EP Epic . You can say that again. At the Swan Dive venue, just past midnight, Etten played a mournful solo electric ditty, reminiscent early Cat Power, and while her lyrics were largely undistinguishable, the track's title unidentifiable, it didn't matter -- the song gushed emotional ache like blood from an open wound. Words [...]
To be a fly on the wall watching a conversation about music between Bob Geldof and Ted Leo is already exciting; then SXSW's Key Note Speaker Bobby G mentioned how he'd like to check out These United States play at SXSW! (It's around the 7 minute mark, but you should watch the whole thing). It's okay that he first calls them "Empire of the United States" or something. As their publicist, I still swelled with pride. Maybe this will spawn a glam collabo with Empire of the Sun . And if we're keeping tally here, which we're [...]
Planning a trip to New York City soon? You might want to wait. Come May 22nd, New York's Bowery Ballroom plans to throw what will undoubtedly be a night to remember (via Brooklyn Vegan ). In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Michael Azerrad 's Our Band Could Be Your Life , the venue will play host to a slew of bands, all covering acts discussed in the book. In other words, have you ever said to yourself, "Gee golly, Titus Andronicus reminds me of The Replacements"? Good, because they're covering them. But, [...]
