Clean George IV are a scottish band that, I must be honest, I don't know a huge amount about. However, they have so far issued one very good single, entitled 'First Blast Of The Trumpet Against The Monstrous Regiment Of Women.' This is not enocuraging wind instrument related misogyny, but is the title of John Knox's infamous pamphlet about women. As to the b-side, I don't know when the great Highland Crack epidemic was, though Scotland has had its problems with drugs like most countries in the majority and minority worlds. This is their [...]
What does it say about us as a society when twice as many Americans want to spend their holiday weekend lifelessly soaking up "Blades of Glory," or "Are We Done Yet" (Ice Cube? Family comedy?) instead of taking a chance on a creative venture like "Grindhouse?" If you are one of those who bemoans the continued staleness of the television and movie industries, this past week's box office shed a good deal of light on what captivates audiences. Unfortunately, it becomes harder to blame the suits when they're not the ones who pay to see these movies and [...]
Cracker don't get no respect. These guys are legend in my book, true godfathers of the alternative rock scene, and the show last night was only half-full at best. Given it was a Tuesday night, and given that this is Colorado Springs which is not exactly known for its swingin nightlife (that's why we have Denver, and Boulder) -- but they sounded fantastic, and gave it their all. Criminally underappreciated, they easily were better than over half the bands I've seen at the [...]

In the face of huge and incredibly wealthy companies suing one other over because of their fears of the internet, and all the terrible, terrible things it will bring, it might be a good idea to think about how far things have come since the days of Napster and Audiogalaxy. Once, bands and labels did as much as they could to prevent mp3s reaching the internet. Now, almost all labels are engaged with it, and it forms as much a part of their promotional and retail world as anything else - and that's before getting into the whole Web 2.0 [...]
This mix features an array of voices that have captured me. I am a believer in Valentine's Day. At last I have a romantic association with it: three years ago Husband proposed to me on V-Day. At least, that is how I choose to remember it. We were in the middle of a noisy restaurant, the order was taking a long time coming, and he said, "If we are planning to live together, don't you think we should get married?" His face was glowing, and he had kind of a sheepish but expectant look on his face, like, "Uh-oh, now it's out, and what is she [...]

I never intended to put together a 24 song, 77 minute power pop mix. It just happened. One night I found a reissue of Flippin Out, a mid-nineties power pop gem by the Boston band, Gigolo Aunts, on eMusic. Later that same night, I found myself buying the out-of-print three decade power pop compilation, Poptopia, that Rhino released in 1997 (for a considerable mark-up I must add). It didn't end there, as the next two weeks I was obsessively scouring the internet and tearing through my old cd rack in search of the best power pop music ever made. The [...]

I've been shoveling snow all afternoon and holy moley -- it is tough. Gratifying and good hard work, but I have an oozing blister on my thumb and I think my arms and legs may actually fall off. We're going out for (several) margaritas after my hours of no-joking slave labor, then over to some friends' house to ring in 2007. Last year I posted up a New Year's mix , and I was listening to it while assembling [...]

Well, it finally happened. I was finally subjected to my first live performance of the season of "Feliz Navidad," which ne'er fails to make me want to gouge my eardrums out with a knitting needle. I also was at a fancy office Christmas party on Friday night and the soul cover band kept throwing in trombone lines from Joy To The World and Sleigh Ride, etc etc etc. It brought to my attention the fact that this post is long overdue. I've got a pretty sizeable collection of " Christmas Music That Won't Drive [...]

Hey dudes, I'm new here to the site, and the guys have been kind enough to let me put together this year's holiday mix. I do love Christmas music; sorta fitting that it would comprise my first offering to you. I've tested it out, and she feels party worthy. Good for festive drives to the mall, or spicing up train rides to work. We tried to compile some new classics, without it sounding like

The last two weeks i have listening to at least a million songs about Christmas on the net. Here are the ten ones i like the most. Buck Owens - Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy The Raveonettes - The Christmas Song Belle and Sebastian - O Come, O Come, Emmanuel [...]
Ok this is really exciting and also very important...Its that time of year again for " Neiles Life Year End Lists " A list of top albums and songs of 2006...Why so early?? Because I did my list for 2005 around this time last year. Actually it was November 24 of last year that I did my favourite albums of 2005...I believe its the best time to do these lists. A) Cause there isn`t a lot of good albums that come out in December anyway, except for those BullShit albums that the major labels push on us [...]

A friend recently turned me on to two bands from the Rainbow Quartz label whose specialty is ye olde classic 60's power pop soundz. I'm a sucker for the best of this kind of stuff - particularly when it's as good as this. So check out The Sails and The Winnerys and when your done, I've got some (that's the operative word here) of my power-pop faves for your listening pleasure. ******************** [...]

(Teenage fanclub, Stockholm 8/7/05, photo by city kitty ) What you do to me... I know, I can't believe For some reason, songs just come to mind for some reason, sometimes. It's not possible to explain, or reason with the subconscious, better just to let them wash over and they'll pass. So it is with Teenage Fanclub's What You Do To Me this weekend. I was never really familiar with the band aside from what I'd hear on the radio, and this track on a compilation. [...]
