This new release from the American indie-pop band Telekinesis is quickly clawing it's musical way to the top of my summer playlist faves! Now just to clarify a bit, this "band" is another one of those "let's pretend to be a band even though the lead singer is the only one signed, because no one [...]
Tweet We'll be offering our Noise Pop picks over the next several days. Then, as the festival proceeds, our writers and photographers will be reporting back from a whole bunch of Noise Pop events. Looking forward to something in particular? Let us know in the comments. Cafe Du Nord hosts a mostly Merge Records showcase on Wednesday night (8pm, $15), with resurgent indie pop pioneers Versus [...]

Michael Benjamin Lerner broke up with his girlfriend. Then he bought a new bass. The presence of both is all over Telekinesis ' latest full-length 12 Desperate Straight Lines , a record jam-packed with prickly power pop songs with a soft center. The Seattle singer/songwriter/skin-basher takes the tried-and-true approach of making his songs sound like a clear spring day, while his lyrics call for torrential downpour. The tone is established in the record's first two lines: "We fell in love in the summer, by the springtime [...]

So much music to try to keep up with this week. I'm starting to remember why I stopped doing these posts.... Pick of the Week: Telekinesis : 12 Desperate Straight Lines (Merge) – With this record, Telekinesis should cross over to snag Death Cab For Cutie's audience. Produced by DCFC's Chris Walla, it's very well done breakup indie rock with a bit of punch. While I did like their first album, I'm surprised how much I [...]

My buddy Jon wrote in an email to me yesterday: "Hey Andy, did you see this yet? That's your ride too, right?" Sure enough, he linked to this great article from Michael Lerner on Aquarium Drunkard talking about his 1976 BMW 2002. Part of AD's Diversions column in which artists talk about a passion outside of music, I simply felt compelled to leave a comment. We've been hearing more about Lerner's new record under Telekenesis; it's the follow [...]

The sophomore effort by Telekinesis isn't bad. Not by a long shot. Each of the 12 tracks that make up the album is a quick nugget of melodic guitar riffs and driving drum beats. The problem comes along once it ends. Unfortunately, 12 Desperate Straight Lines is average and forgettable for the most part. The songs bleed together, all sharing tones, vocal stylings, and tempos that are far too similar to leave distinct impressions. The riffs are somewhat catchy at first but by the time you reach the end of the record, a lack of innovation [...]

(Diversions, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, catches up with our favorite artists as they wax on subjects other than recording and performing.) Those of you who have owned, or by proxy know someone who has owned a vintage automobile, are aware that it's not just a ride to get you from point A to [...]

American Songwriter When Jeff Mangum, prodigal godhead of that which is largely called indie, gave a rare performance in a Brooklyn loft last December , people freaked out. And reasonably so - the Neutral Milk Hotel -ier had been basically been retired and out of sight for nigh on twelve years, his band having dissolved post- In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and in the intervening years, his legend only grew. So the idea of him suddenly surfacing to play a show probably seemed like a once in a [...]
When Michael Lerner recorded the self-titled Telekinesis debut, it was full of travel imagery, of wishes to be with someone he was separated from and the listlessness of constantly wanting to be elsewhere. The follow-up, 12 Desperate Straight Lines, is wall-to-wall heartache, rumination on said heartache and, for good measure, a Paul Simon reference. No [...]

Everybody Taste recently chatted with Seattle musician Michael Benjamin Lerner, who under the nome de plume Telekinesis , released his second full-length album today—the dark and bass-heavy 12 Desperate Straight Lines . We chatted about recording with Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla, Lerner's preference for analog tape, his adoration of the band Flin Flon, and the album's excellent grimy and fuzzy bass guitar. I understand you wrote the majority of 12 Desperate Straight Lines during the winter in Berlin on a 9 to 5 routine. Why Germany? And why the schedule? [...]

O DNA do Asobi [...]

Tired of all the weird experimental indie music out today? Sick of the synth and the slowly panging pianos underneath lyrics veiled behind shadowy metaphors? Maybe you long for the days of fast-paced, upbeat indie rock with catchy hooks and simple melodies. Maybe you replay your old Matt & Kim or Strokes records with your trendy 2000s-era giant headphones and sigh. Well sigh no more (note: not Sigh No More )! Seattle-based indie rocker Michael Benjamin Lerner, better known as Telekinesis, has released his second record full of those infectious indie tunes you still hold dear. Lerner [...]

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Telekinesis consists primarily of Michael Benjamin Lerner, who won over your attention from his first and self titled album. On 12 Desperate Straight Lines , he looks to keep you in his clutches, locking you in a steady sea of indie rock that will surely create a lasting adoration for this man and his craft. Beginning with "You Turn Clear in the Sun," Telekinesis picks up right where thy left off: the crisp [...]
