Artists have been recording cover songs for years, and putting them out as singles, or b-sides. However, the trend recently has been to put out an entire album of hits recorded by others. Rod Stewart sold millions of CDs using this formula, and now Phil Collins is hoping to follow in "Big Nose's" footsteps with his latest batch of Motown tunes titled, Going Back . Collins stays true to the arrangements and instrumentation of the original recordings, and he even coaxed some of the infamous Funk Brothers, including Bob Babbitt, Eddie Willis and Ray Monette, out of [...]
A familiar name in the history of R&B music is that of the Temptations, a singing group with many years of success and countless adoring fans. But what you might not know is the story of Jimmy Ruffin, who turned down a chance to sing in the group and instead recommended his little brother, but ended up forging a pretty good solo career of his own. The Ruffin brothers grew up in Mississippi as the sons of a minister, and even as children they sang in a gospel music group. By the early 1960s both Jimmy [...]
The third Covered In Soul compilation may draw from the most eclectic original material yet. So in the space of four songs we move from Grateful Dead favourite Casey Jones via The Beatles to a Barry Manilow song and a Roy Orbison song reinvented by Al Green. A couple of show tunes get the soul treatment. Sammy Davis Jr's wonderful I've Gotta Be Me is lovely in Vivian Reed's hands, while I would regard the Supremes and Temptations collaboration on The Impossible Dream more as a curiosity (hence its position as a postscript). The previous two mixes featured [...]

So I posed 3 questions to Fitz from Fitz & the Tantrums (whose new album Pickin' Up the Pieces is available on i-Tunes , their website & Amazon ) on Twitter today & here is the transcript from that interview: Me: The LA Times said you have a clearly derived style from bands like the Temptations. Today marks the 25 th anniversary of Love Aid, a sentence that makes me feel old. I wrote what I think is my definitive take on the day two years ago. I have nothing new to add, except for a few minor edits. But it's the 25 th anniversary of a big event I actually attended, so I will recycle that post and re-upload my Live Aid mix, ripped from DVD. The music was mostly terrible, the artists tended to be self-serving and [...]
Filed under: Spinner Interview It's often said that the Temptations did for soul music what the Beatles did for rock 'n' roll. From post-doo-wop ballads such as 'My Girl' and the psychedelic soul of 'Ball of Confusion' and 'Papa Was a Rollin' Stone' to an '80s collaboration with Rick James , these Hall of Famers span generations. The Temptations' most recent album, aptly titled 'Still Here,' is a prelude to the group's 50th anniversary celebration in 2011. Like [...]

Another great, gone.
Norman Whitfield, one of Motown's best in-house composers and producers, has died. Whitfield's name graces every third page of my Motown's Greatest Piano Book. He wrote most of the Temptations' songs after 1968 including "I'm Losing You," "Ball of Confusion," "Just My Imagination" and one of my personal favorites, "Message from a Black Man" and will probably go down in history for penning "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Good coverage at pitchfork, here .

In Memoriam May 2010
I realise that this is coming rather late in the month, and there has been the death of Marvin Isley in the interim. Anyway, the two big deaths in May were those of the stunning Lena Horne and heavy metal legend Ronnie James Dio. Another particularly notable death is that of country musician and songwriter Slim Bryant, who died at 101. He had one of his songs recorded by the legendary Jimmie Rodgers, who died in 1933, and played guitar on his 1932 song Mother Queen Of My Heart, and collaborated with the seminal fiddler Clayton McMichen. Siphiwo [...]
