We're admittedly a little late to collating last month's best pictorial work, but hey, we've been busy with a number of festivals this month. Still, it's hard to forget May; between early summer tours and a trip to The Gorge, there wasn't a second to spare. That's why we just had to yank the spotlight back some. Don't get too nostalgic - most of these acts are still on the road! Event: M83 at Chicago's Riviera Theatre (5/4) Photographer: Heather Kaplan [...]

How many men can say they've played in front of tens of thousands of people while standing in front of a giant inflatable cock'n'balls that have been painted to look like a fiery bird of prey? Jack Black and Kyle Gass can. That's just how Tenacious D roll when it comes to the Main Stage at Download Festival 2012. [Show as slideshow] [...]

Leave it to Jack Black and Kyle Gass to have provided the best stage prop of Sasquatch! 2012. In honor of their recent album “Rize of the Fenix,” and a symbol of the duo’s return to musical comedy rising back up from the ashes, a gigantic phoenix was positioned at center stage. But we all could see the use of a phoenix (particularly its neck and body) was really just an exceptionally clever way to place what looked like an enormous cock and balls in the middle of their performance. [...]
For years, Jack Black and Kyle Gass have sailed through their career on a comedic wave of foot-stomping, energetic and deliciously self-loving, anthemic rock n’ roll. Since announcing that a new album was in the works in 2008, they've kept us waiting and for a while it looked like it wasn’t going to happen. Had a herd of pigs flown through the sky to, low and behold, a sudden growth of maturity in the band? An epiphany perhaps? But, no fear of that, ever-serving, Tenacious D are back, and back with a bang. Rize [...]

Be warned: I may use the term "Show of the Day" more than once. You're now more prepared for the final day's review of Sasquatch. I shall now get right to the music. The Sheepdogs opened the day with a bang. "Show of the Day"! Didn't think it would come that early did you? Well, here's why they're contenders for that title: They rocked so hard at noon on the final day of a four day music festival that people started randomly log-rolling down the gorge conjuring images of [...]

Beck performed with a famous 'Jack' at this weekend's Sasquatch! Music Festival, but it wasn't the one he just recorded a single with. Rather, Mr. Hansen's encore featured Jack Black and Kyle Gass, AKA Tenacious D , who aided in performances of “Mutherfuker” and “E-Pro”. If you search my iTunes account for "Jack Black," you'll find results in two separate areas: comedy films like School of Rock, and hidden in the music of a band known as Tenacious D. Their music has the distinction of being the only band on my entire iPod listed with the genre I call "comedy [...]

Despite debuting with his first Number One on the Top Albums chart with 77,000 copies, Adam Lambert 's album " Trespassing " is the lowest debut amount this year. It is the smallest sales total for a number one album since August 2011 when Adele's " 21 " sold 76,000 copies. It does however, replace fellow American Idol graduate Carrie Underwood , who falls to #3. Old School Metallic-Comedy act, Tenacious D 's " Rize Of The Fenix " debuts at #5 with 44,000 units sold. Adam Lambert 's Trespassing has sailed to the #1 position on the Billboard Top 200 in its first week, marking the American Idol alum's first chart-topping LP. (Previous offering For Your Entertainment peaked at #3 in 2009.) This gives the "Never Close Our Eyes" crooner the distinction of being the first openly-gay singer to top the main album chart in the US, according to the Village Voice 's math , with a single-artist title. Another interesting tidbit: this marks the first [...]
