If you read this blog (or indeed a handful of other Irish music blogs ) on a regular basis, you'll be aware of the burgeoning solo electronic producer talent that has cropped up in the last year or so. It's a lonely process most of the time, being a beatkid so a disparate group of these individuals have got together and format an alliance called Lightbox , based on their combined penchant for using visual-based music hardware like Kaoss Pads and Monomes. Its members: Bantum , [...]
All this week we've been bringing you our annual pick of new Irish musical talent, featuring the twenty acts that State feels will come to define 2012. From hip-hop and electronica to quiet acoustic sounds and loud guitars, we think it's our best list yet. Now you can enjoy the Faces of 2012 in sound and vision, with our download compilation and gorgeous digital magazine - including many shots taken exclusively for this feature by our wonderful photographic team and lovingly laid out by State designer Simon Roche. We hope it showcases not just the musical talent blooming out of [...]
Limerick producer Ronan Carroll makes brooding electronica under the moniker of Tenaka . Collaborating with Sacred Animals, Holy Roman Army, Sorcha Brennan, Daithi and Elaine Mai, his Ephemeral EP is an introspective collection of metronomic arrangements and live instrumentation with casting scope and ambition whetting our appetites for Tenaka's debut full length album in 2012. How did you get started making music? I was always passionate about music but never considered writing my own until I bought a guitar a few years back. What first started out as chord based tracks [...]

My Pilot, The P Affection, The Riot Tapes, Tenaka, and Youth Mass all pick their top five albums of 2011.
It's widely accepted that 2010 was a classic year for Irish bands, one that was always going to be difficult to reciprocate. Last year, the Point of Everything did a Best Songs of 2010 list that featured a measly six Irish bands. Looking back, so many more Irish bands deserved [Read more]

Le Galaxie are releasing a brand new EP of remixes today for free download. The Laserdisc Dawn EP features reworks of tracks from Le Galaxie's debut album
Limerick producer Ronan Carroll aka Tenaka has just released his second EP, the stunning 7-track, EPhemeral. The EP is a collaborative affair featuring Sacred Animals, Holy Roman Army, Sorcha Brennan, Daithi and Elaine Mai and was produced by Ian Maleney. It is a brooding blend of chillout electronica mixing deep and dreamy atmospherics with subtle, crisp and shuffled beats, not to mention the equally atmospheric vocals. It is quite different [...]

It's always interesting to watch the evolution of a producer particularly over the course of few years. Ronan Carroll aka Tenaka is one such case. A regular reader of this here blog, his tracks and remixes have appeared here before. His second EP entitled EPhemeral (available for your own price at Bandcamp or below) is a step up from that EP. Production has moved into a more nuanced and universal direction. First track 'Three' features a vocal sample that could fit beautifully into an electronic DJ set, 'Home' featuring Galway [...]

Tenaka - EPhemeral EPhemeral EP by Tenaka
Tenaka's second EP features a Who's Who of Irish musicians among its guest stars. Highly recommended.

Whuh-oh my x chromosome is all itchy and shit, which can only mean one thing - I'm going to write another list. A short and sweet one, though; just long enough to ease the symptoms of restless list syndrome. It will be a list of what I think are the best home-listening techno albums, albums which shine on headphones but which would work in clubs too. I've seen people list their favourite home-listening dance albums on Amazon, and they mostly seem to select glitchy, fiddly, Warp records-y stuff. I'm ruling all that out. My criterion is simple. You must be [...]
