THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Titus Andronicus w/ Carnivores Sunday, April 24 The Earl - 488 Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta 30316 Admission $10 / Purchase Tickets I just want to take a minute to appreciate the fact that Atlanta has become a regular stop for New Jersey rockers and committed road warriors, Titus Andronicus . And with all the critical success behind last year's magnificent sophomore effort, the Monitor , I keep expecting the group to take their raucous live show [...]

I am now into my third month of putting together these ATL Releases to Listen For posts and the thing that has impressed me the most so far is how many new releases fly under my radar. Each month it seems there are several local records that I never see coming and that I fail to mention until they're already out. March was a great example of this as we got some terrific — and, in most cases, far too unheralded — releases from the likes of Soft Powers whose new album, Outlandish Scandals , [...]
The modern music scene is a tough one to grasp. There is a myriad of digital outlets today to suggest what you should be listening to. You no longer have to rely on your friends, your most trustworthy music advocates to suggest new bands. Blogs are an endless resource where you don't have to look hard to find a free song to sample each day. From the blogs, to commercials to ringtones we are constantly bombarded by fragmented bits of music. Somewhere along the way the line turned hazy between an appropriate way [...]

Deus Ex Machina presents Pistolero, Tendaberry and Today the Moon Tomorrow the Sun at the Earl tonight

-I get the feeling that most conversations with Gavin Degraw inevitably lead back to the topic of his pocketknife . -If anyone knows when or if The Fruit Bats are headed to L.A., please email me. I would love to see them live. They were most recently in Chicago and Iowa City playing to sold out shows . -There's a band out there called Mexican Institute of Sound . They are nowhere near as serious as their name would imply, [...]

I just got word yesterday that Am I Still Illmatic, the debut album from Atlanta's Tendaberry , is due out next month. The news prompted me to sit down this evening and track out their stellar performance from last year's PopFest. The set contains many originals that will appear on the upcoming disc, along with an interesting selection of covers. Day three of Popfest provided a variety of great bands to see - a few that fulfilled expectations and a few that completely blew me away. Overall, I consider this day to be my favourite out of the four-day event, as later in the night there were a set of three bands, back-to-back-to-back (no, not homeruns!) that absolutely killed. So much so, that i'll be giving each of these their own posts. As we headed back to Little Kings once again, we were a few hours late trying to get some blog [...]
