The inaugural First City Festival will take place August 24th and 25th at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California. The festival grounds are at same site as the famed Moterey Pop Festival in 1967. Today is supposed to be warm, maybe even hot. Yesterday Skip, my factotum, was here all day getting the backyard and deck ready for summer. Looks like the timing was perfect. The vegetable garden was weeded, its fence mended, candles hung in the trees, furniture uncovered and cleaned, Gracie's holes filled, including the one closest to China, backyard ornaments put into the ground and my favorite new addition set up from the heavy pine tree: two stars hung together with five tails extending from them all in white lights. The lovely video from Tennis is a Lynch-ian, color soaked performance piece. I never know if I'm a full-on fan of Tennis, but this video is charming as hell, in a perfectly weird way. Bonus link: a live version of "My Better Self" shot at The Earth House Collective for the possibly defunct Laundro Matinee . INK's 3rd annual Middle of the Map Music Fest has unveiled its lineup and its a doozey. Over 60 bands are playing this year's Middle of the Map festival. I was on the fence about this year's Snowball Music Festival. The lineup was spotty, with the heavy hitters being strong, but not strong enough to warrant a trip up to Winter Park. Today's last lineup announcement knocked it out of the park. Flying Lotus, Delta Spirit, Krewella, Japandroids, Polica and Tennis to name a few have been announced. I guess it's time to start looking for accommodations. The last two years have SOLD OUT, so my recommendation would probably to get your tickets ASAP. Patrick Watson - Adventures in Your Own Backyard - Patrick Watson is gaining steam with lush orchestrated indie-rock / folk songs that seem to float and quiver over this excellent album that was remarkably recorded in the singer's apartment. There are vast sounds coming from every angle, and Watson uses his voice to fog over these orchestrations creating a huge sound that will delight you from every angle.
