Between finals, sorting out my upcoming graduation, holidays, and securing my own webspace (look for a move shortly!), it's been a quiet couple of months around here. But I'm back with a couple of lists to round out my contributions for 2007... even if we're in 2008 now. 5. Grizzly Bear - Friend I've been a bit slow to come around to these guys, but this EP of odds and ends is a remarkably strong follow-up to [...]

Sacramento-based noise rock outfit Tera Melos have been causing quite the commotion since their formation in 2004. The trio have been amongst the flock of noise/experimental acts of recent times that have effectively blended to limitless space of instrumental-based music with the organized chaos that can be jazz/funk, and of course, rock music. What immediately [...]

Man, this cold is kicking my butt. Right now I'm loopy on a cocktail of Sudafed, Airborne, and Halls. Being the trooper I am, though, I've dragged my laptop over to the couch and will post a couple of things for you good people. I think I'll make the "Music From My Mailbox" a semi-regular feature around here. Maybe every other Sunday, depending how much music I get. I appreciate those who send me tunes and I don't want anyone to think they're being ignored, but by the same token, my inbox isn't really being deluged with stuff. [...]
Have you ever sat awake at night wondering what Minus the Bear might sound like if they were on speed? Considering that the last Minus the Bear album "Planet of Ice" sounded like the band had been smoking boatloads of weed for an exotic journey into the psychedelic, we've seen what can happen when they go that direction. Now before you start asking too many questions, let me introduce you to Tera Melos, a band out of California that is taking that Minus the Bear math rock-type sound and turning it inside out. In fact, I'm pretty sure they're all [...]

Tera Melos is back again this year, now teaming up with Texas-based aggro-instrumental rockers By the End of Tonight for a split EP, Complex Full of Phantoms . These guys just can't be stopped, giving us even more schizophrenic insanity and lacing their crushingly complex math-riffage with sporadic vocals and a bit more dreamlike, ambient electronica this time around. We're so ready for another full-length, guys. But, until then... the EP comes out in early November on Temporary Residence. Listen: Download: [...]

Somehow it's been three weeks since my last post. It seems like every couple months my time just gets eaten up by something. Well, I'm back... and I plan to get into a groove before I start my Fall classes and just ride that groove until finals. Let's start with something that'll kick my brain into gear: Tera Melos , one of my favorite bands right now, put out their Drugs to the Dear Youth EP earlier this year in an extremely limited vinyl [...]

I had nearly forgotten about the Facing New York / Tera Melos tour that starts tonight in Texas. This may or may not have been caused by my severe disappointment that Tera Melos is dropping out a couple days early... a couple days before the show in San Diego. Either way, I recommend that anyone in the vicinity of a stop on this tour set aside the evening. Between the technical wizardry and pure ferocity of Tera Melos and the soaring pop-punk/prog (it works much better than you think it might) of Facing New York, you [...]

Tera Melos - (Is Good for What Ails You) (Springman 2007) Tera Melos - Drugs to the Dear Youth EP / Springman Roseville, California. Molly Ringwald? Jonathan Taylor Thomas? Summer Sanders? 18 boxcar explosions in a Southern Pacific railyard in 1973? No, I suppose these aren't the best of reasons to care about the Sacramento suburb. But it turns out that Springman's Tera Melos haven't given up the fight for Wikipedia notoriety (somewhere, Susan Peters is laughing - disambiguate that ). In fact, their latest instrumental EP [...]
