As you've probably read, My Chemical Romance announced earlier this week that they were going their separate ways, and this morning singer Gerard Way published a lengthy missive explaining the reasons behind the split, along with a whole bunch of other stuff about coffee, birds, talking amplifiers, and acting on stage. As far as these kinds of statements go, it's really pretty great — honest, funny, and heartfelt — and it got us thinking about some of the more notable breakup announcements of our time. Some of these are funny, some of them gloriously [...]

Ex- Test Icicles man, Sam Mehran is to release his first (and last) album under the Outer Limit Recordings alias. Mehran started using the moniker shortly after the dance-punk outfit's demise but, despite tracks floating online, there were never any proper releases. Now, however, the American-born musician will release a retrospective of sorts in the form of Singles, Demos and Rarities (2007-2010) on 15 April via Weird World. The collection will come out as a double LP, tallying at 24 songs in [...]
As the producers of Solange’s EP and Vampire Weekend’s album, respectively, Dev Hynes and Ariel Rechtshaid have built up their names to be nearly as big as our cover stars, mainly while working behind the ... read more

In celebration of its rich history of remixes, Domino Records is releasing a label-spanning compilation entitled Motion Sickness on December 3rd (the title's taken from the opening track of Hot Chip's latest, In Our Heads ). The 20-track effort features previously-released remixes of songs from Animal Collective , The Kills , Franz Ferdinand , Stephen Malkmus , Four Tet , Austra , Twin Sister , and more by remixing gurus Justice , Jon Hopkins , DFA , Joy Orbison , Matthew [...]

I don't know why it popped into my head the other day, but once it did I found it lodged there and pretty much immovable. I'm talking about 'Galaxy Of The Lost' by Lightspeed Champion . The song is a good few years old, and I haven't heard it in ages, so I'm not sure what triggered it. It got me me thinking to how much different stuff Dev Hynes has been involved in over the years, and how varied each of those guises are. He started out life as the guitar player in [...]

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Dev Hynes changes names like most of us change pants, you know, once or twice a week. First there was Test Icicles , then Lightspeed Champion , and now Blood Orange . While names may come and go, Dev will always be the same, and Coastal Groove , his new record, finds him sort of running in place, albeit a more 80s influenced place. When "Forget It" hits your speakers, those familiars won't find too [...]

Tweet This post is a "QuickPick". QuickPicks are my attempt at getting all of the music that's sent to me that I like (or just music I like but have no words for because it's so awesome), out into the dubya dots. Any time I get sent music that I like I "star" it in Gmail and then go back and listen to it a day later. If it's still as good as it was a day before [...]

Tweet Buy the album from Amazon - Vinyl / CD This album pisses different hues of excellence. True story. With an album titled "Coastal Grooves" you might be forgiven for thinking that it's a breezy Summer jam of an album, and in many ways it is, but where bands title albums like that based on the sound they're trying to convey, Blood Orange is making [...]

Devonté Hynes, formerly of Test Icicles and Lightspeed Champion, is one of the busiest modern producers around. Having penned works for Florence & The Machine, Basement Jaxx, Solange Knowles, Theophilus London and a grammy award winning Chemical Brothers track, you would be hard pressed to find a producer with the ability shapeshift sounds as well as he does, while maintaining his own identity. With this in mind, Hynes latest project, Blood Orange , continues to be a prime example of a songwriter who is comfortable and honest with themselves. [...]

New Artists, Fav Tracks Devonté Hynes is hardly a new artist as he has been in the music industry for several years either recording as Test Icicles or Lightspeed Champion or writing and producing for other artists. His new project Blood Orange is propelling him further into the spotlight with its unabashed 802s influence accented [...]
He's a sucka for kick a** monikers. Mostly known for his work under Lightspeed Champion or perhaps birth name Devonté Hynes - where he wrote and produced on Theophilus London 's Lover's Holiday EP, - our British quirky friend releases the visuals to the first single under Blood Orange, titled "Dinner." The video is nothing less than greatness, supporting the track's 80s' felt synths with jean jackets, fly hairstyles and basketball. The video was directed by Alan Del Rio Ortiz, and the track was recorded and produced by [...]

Tweet Admittedly I'm not the biggest Tom Vek fan on the planet, mainly because I've only been listening to him for a handful of months, but the first time I did listen to his album I could hear why he's so revered. I could hear him single-handedly paving the way for bands like Friendly Fires, Test Icicles, and even future albums from Bloc Party and Minus The Bear, but he only ever released one album, 20052s "We Have Sound". There weren't even any singles or [...]
Test Icicles – Circle, Square, Triangle I’m not entirely sure as to how this song has lasted so long in my library. That’s a lie, I know exactly why; it’s because there’s melody. A rather elegant melody stretched over an undoubted blanket of chaos. It’s merry, there’s charm, and you can sense the fun. Each instrument is allowed the freedom to chase their own twists and beats and destiny and what shouldn’t form to become one surely does. It’s less poison, more the medicine that goes down with some sugar [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Years ago, Dev Hynes had it all as a member of Test Icicles . The English press fawned over him and his mates, and yet it didn't last. Still, he has maintained his role in the spotlight by pushing forward with Lightspeed Champion . His second album under the moniker, Life Is Sweet! Nice to Meet You, carries him in a slightly different direction than his first outing, albeit one that exhibits Dev taking more musical risks. [...]
Yesterday, a lot of good blogs headed over to Blogger to express their love of music only to find that Blogger had deleted their work. From Poptarts Suck Toasted (a 5 year old site) to I Rock Cleveland to Liquid Music, and a quite a few more, just *POOF* gone. Fortunately for a couple of them, they had backed-up their work, others, like Poptarts, had to go to their Google Reader and start copying & pasting from their RSS feed history into an undesigned wordpress they quickly set up on their own servers. Now, I'm no idiot (well, [...]

1 meine alben des jahres die damaligen top 5 meiner persönlichen indiestreber-jahrescharts 2008 : 1. late of the pier - [...]
