Friday night I drove out from my home in northeast Portland to Happy Valley, Oregon for Pickathon 2009 . The drive only took about thirty minutes, but I felt a world away from the city as I pulled into the dirt parking lot of Pendarvis Farms. Directed by a friendly parking attendant, I schlepped my camping supplies onto the festival grounds. It was close to 10 pm and pitch black. From my left, I could hear the amplified music from the main stage. To my right were the woods containing the campgrounds. I hiked [...]

Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down covering Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind by The Lovin' Spoonful is from her split 7 with The Thermals. This sock puppet video for it was directed by Clyde Petersen and Forrest Baum. Previous: Thao Nguyen & The Get [...]

That's where you'll find all of my SXSW updates (i.e. where I'm at, what I'm seeing, how good/bad something is, etc), so either sign up to follow me or keep an eye on that box. Pictures will be posted the day after. Hooray for live blogging! Here's part one of my 10 Artists I Must See At SXSW. Enjoy. By the [...]

NEW SPINNERETTE TRACK Brody Dalle's newest incarnation Spinnerette have quietly released a new EP containing a remix of a track called "Sex Bomb", the real version of which will undoubtedly show up on their upcoming debut full-length. Chock full of the patented Brody-snarl and swimming in early-90s electro beats, the Adam Freeland remix swirls around growled lyrics that reek of raw sexuality. As usual with the ex-Distillers frontwoman, a dancey electro song quickly becomes an entirely different creature with her at the helm - can't wait to hear the real [...]

Ah sweet Friday rolls around again and I'm tired of the work week and ready to dig on in to inexpensive whiskey and a healthy dollop of live music. I'm sure you feel the same, so I'll get right to the goods: FRIDAY: KEXP Yuletide Benefit w/ Grand Archives, Shearwater, & Dutchess and The Duke @ Neumos I'm not going to be attending this show, as I'll be heading out on Saturday night to see Thao and crew. But, if you can't make it [...]

Remember that Noah's year-end list will be up on Sunday, my favorite records are next week and John Michael's selections are due the next weekend. Yeah for lists! Thursday, August 7, 2008 - Thao Nguyen And The Get Down Stay Down - Emo's (Inside) - Austin, TX - Aimee Bobruk Aimee opened the show with about a 30 minute set that I thought was pretty solid. Unfortunately, I had never heard of her before last night, so after a handful of quiet, slow strumming numbers it all started to just sound the same. The vocals were great though, and I certainly wouldn't mind [...]
THAO NGUYEN GETS DOWN IN AUSTIN Swinging in for a free in-store performance at End of an Ear Records a little over an hour later than expected, Thao Nguyen and her backing backing band the Get Down Stay Down nonetheless managed to tear through a set of bluesy indie rock that kept the audience rapt with attention throughout short set. With intricate guitar-picking skills that nonetheless seems to flow from her fingertips like raindrops, and a voice that recalls a mix between a Southern songstress croon and a [...]
Thursday, July 03, 2008 Originally, my plan was to treat this holiday weekend like any other, but after some thought I decided that I wouldn't mind take a little mini-break. You should do the same, but not before you check out my five favorite albums so far this year. Posting will probably resume Sunday. Enjoy. #5) Shearwater - Rook This slot was a hard one to make a decision for (hence the runner up list below), but after I [...]

Monday, April 7, 2008 - Thao Nguyen And The Get Down Stay Down - The Mohawk - Austin, TX - - Weird Weeds - Weird Weeds are a local act that I had been wanting to see for awhile, and they did not disappoint. I thought they were the perfect choice to open the rather diverse show, and I really enjoyed their intricate, yet bombastic sound in the midst of what [...]
Meet Thao Nguyen. According to her bio, Thao started playing the guitar when she was 12, and perfected her technique while working at the laundromat her mom ran while dreaming of Lilith Fair. While working towards a sociology/women's studies degree in Virginia, she met up with some of the people who would eventually form her upstart backing band, the Get Down Stay Down. And now they all travel across the country singing jaunty little ditties located near the intersection of bluegrass and twee pop. I think that just about covers it. As you can probably already tell, certain [...]
