It's been three years since the world was last blessed with a Silver Jews album, but the wait is almost over! In June the reclusive band will be releasing Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea, but thanks to the powers of the internet most of us have had the priveledge of hearing this wonderful piece of music all week. Like everything Silver Jews have given us so far, Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea bring

Toronto - Wade wrote about Thao Nguyen about a month ago and we were both quite impressed with the album. So naturally, when Thao Nguyen and The Get Down Stay Down rolled around the dot on Monday, we had to go. It was weird, because neither of us had been able to find tickets for the show. I was under the impression that it was one of doors only shows. WRONG. Apparently, this was a Xiu Xiu show, and Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down was just the openers. BOOOoo. Of course, [...]

"Apparently, I sing like I'm drunk. Which, well... maybe I am." I've been listening to this for a few weeks now, and frankly, it's amazing. Thao Nguyen (with her band, the Get Down Stay Down) have made an album with guitars like scissors, drums like paper, and vocals like glue! Or like a big shiny cocktail with ice-cubes that you have to drink for a straw, and the ice is knocking of the glass in a weird rhythm while melting. And yes, the whole thing sounds a little drunk, but drunk with the weight [...]
After struggling through our Best Of 2007 posts, Joe and I decided to start a new feature. At the end of every month, we are going to recap some of the musical highlights of the month that was. Videos, albums, remixes... this will help you find anything that you may have missed. Plus it will really come in handy in December, when we have to go back through the year. Since February is already half over, let's get cracking... January was a great month for regional releases. There was not a huge quantity of them, but [...]
No, not you Joy Division, you sound as lovely as ever. During the last couple of weeks, where I sat in my appartment, studying ... erm, doing feeble attempts to study for my exams, I went through a heavy Joy Division phase. Surprisingly, listening to Joy Division enhances my willingness to keep on reading the same muck over and over again. Anyway, now I'm back home, no university, no classses,

Thao Nguyen is a female pop singer from Virginia, however, upon my first listen to her new CD, We Brave Bee Stings And All , I wasn't completey sure if it was a girl or a guy singing. She has an obviously high pitched voice, but there is a subtle hint of a guy hitting the high ranges. She is backed by her buddies The Get Down And Stay Down on this new release from Kill Rock Stars. Sometimes I like to try and predict what the music on a CD is going to [...]

Thao Nguyen has been making music for quite some time now, as the Virginian started plucking strings at the ripe age of 12. After various stints and attempts with relatively unknown bands, Nguyen has finally found her groove with her new band The Get Down Stay Down. Well, Nguyen and the band have just released their debut album We Brave Bee Stings and All , a folk-rock gem that seems well suited for those introspective, easy-like-Sunday mornings. Nguyen's gentle, petite vocals teeter on the edge of sounding cutesy and strained, but somehow she pulls it [...]

Next Tuesday, Kill Rock Stars will release We Brave Bee Stings and All , the runner up to the '05 debut Like The Linen from Thao Nguyen & The Get Down Stay Down . 23 year old, Virginian, Thao Nguyen is everywhere these days and you can get a million reviews about the new album, which by the way is totally awesome and I'll tell you why...actually let's first talk about Thao. Well one thing I wanted to mention...She's Vietnamese and for some reason that makes it extra cool, anyone know what I'm [...]

Bozidar Brazada - Idle Idol (2007) This week we don't flourish, we win. Our moments aren't enjoyed, they're catapulted. To our troubles, somersaults. To our pencils, sparklers. We don't laugh, we cannonball. Thao with the Get Down Stay Down - Swimming Pools (mp3) Thao with the Get Down [...]

As loose and hey look I am having an indie rock slumber party as Feist's The Reminder is, it never sounds too reckless. In that respect, Thao Nguyen sounds more like St. Vincent , or maybe former tour mate Laura Veirs after a few drinks. Which is not to say the album's sloppy - I'm sure the arrangements were meticulous - but it sure seems like Nguyen and her band are having a good time. Her widescreen production ranges from Broken Social Scene -like moments of controlled chaos (the colliding [...]

When I first heard Thao Nguyen I immediately wondered if I was listening to a new Cat Power song , but something told me I wasn't. The voice was there, but the chilled out bluesy feel was absent. It was replaced with jingle jangle guitars and an overwhelming sense of fun. It just takes a one listen to Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down's forthcoming album, We Brave Bee Stings and All , to fall in love with the band. The songs are fun and exciting and one can't help [...]

She is an insanely likable combination of Cat Power, Asobi Seksu, and the lead singers of Cloud Cult and Menomena. She's from Falls Church, VA, but her record is being released Kill Rocks Stars (Portland, OR) on January 29th. She is/they are Thao Nguyen & the Get Down Stay Down , members of which are from Richmond's The OK Bird and Murphy's Kids, to name a few. It's disarming, adorably fragile, bluesy indiefolk with the occasional blip of pop flavor, and it's really nice way to kick off 2008's new music features here at linesthroughlines. Stay tuned... [...]
