In an effort to prepare for this year's Treasure Island Music Festival, I've decided to spend some of the week getting to know, and hear the scheduled artists. Thao with The Get Down Stay Down For Thao Nguyen, the adorable 23-year-old Virginia-bred cheeky songwriter, things have come a long way since her 2006 appearance on the KRS compilation, The Sound the Hare Heard. Last year, Thao gave us her sophmore release We Brave Bee Stings and All, a perky, twee guitar and vox-filled album. She and [...]
In my honest opinion, Treasure Island Music Festival is the best music festival I have ever attended. The line-up this year was filled with the best of who's-who in the indie music world without it compromising reputation by booking a radio-friendly act in order to boost ticket sales. Besides, both dates were sold out and for good reason. So let's go over Day One first; first off, not the best day. Not a bad day by any means though. Bay Area's own The Limousines kicked off the festival at a perfectly upbeat and energetic [...]

It's only been until this summer that I finally got acquainted with Thao and the Get Down Stay Down 's incredible alt rock, when, completely by chance, I stumbled across their myspace . Boy, was I missing out! There's something really special about the band, it's almost like they have this sort of aura around them, something that I can't quite put my finger on - maybe it's their catchy pop hooks or, just as well, the band's perfect use of anthem choruses, but, whatever the case may be, they're doing something right. Thao's latest album, " Know [...]

Hey, if you've been watching the RSS feed, you know I just did some serious housekeeping with the Drake's Takes , and now, for a brief moment, I'm back up to date (we'll see how long that lasts). This week, Drake spotlights the new one from The Flaming Lips , but if you've been reading bumpershine closely over the last couple of months, you know that last week I was most excited about the US Release of Fanfarlo 's brilliant debut "Reservoir". -ed. We're rapidly approaching the point of no return for releases [...]

Thao with the Get Down Stay Down - Know Better Learn Faster Release Date: October 13, 2009 Label: Kill Rock Stars 9.0 HANK ALTOGETHER: On Thao's 2008 LP, We Brave Bee Stings and All , there was invincibility. Even the title track's suggested this: "we brave bee stings and all / we don't dive we cannonball." Thao's ferociousness, her untireability, the refusing to [...]

Back at eating/sf , Kasey has prepared her review of the various vendors who helped make our wedding perfect for us. Here at Musical Pairings, I'm kinda taking today's post in a slightly different direction. I'm sharing Musical Pairings @ eating/sf's October Mix. Nonetheless, before we get to the mix, I did want to mention the DJ who absolutely rocked it at our wedding: DJ Crimson . We gave him a partial playlist of music that we liked and he filled in the gaps. He figured out which tracks would work and which [...]

[This weekend's concert calendar is more crowded than the 405 on a Friday afternoon. Superstars, stars, shoulda-been-stars, rising stars, fading stars — this weekend has it all. Today we're joining thousands of other thoughtful blogs to shed light on the serious issue of climate change, the focus of this year's Blog Action Day . The aim of the day, held each year on October 15, is to draw attention and incite discussion on one global issue. The climate-and how we're altering it-needs some serious attention. Oxfam America talked to Thao Nguyen of Thao with the Get Down Stay Down on the issue, and we've also interviewed hundreds of musicians about the political and social issues surrounding climate change and the green [...]

Thirteen is a healthy quantity of tracks in a music world that under-emphasizes the LP in general. Whenever I pick up an album I first take a look at its length. Typically, a 13-track album is bound to be laced with plenty of filler. Several tracks will rise to the top while others are skip-worthy. Perhaps its the inundation of our culture with the need for speedy access of information that the process of digesting a lengthy album in its entirety becomes laborious. We process information so quickly now that the music genre is experiencing what the literature arena has [...]
