Don't worry, this podcast really isn't about football. I might have been tempted, but in all honesty, but I can't really think of all that many good songs about football and if I am being truthful with myself I can't imagine you lot really enjoying a podcast about football all that much. More to the point, I am back playing football myself now, after something like two years out with back problems. Two years really is a long time to miss out on something you love doing, and even more so when you're past your mid-thirties and every [...]

Ryan Thomas Schmale recently released his second album under the moniker That Ghost . Rosalind EP has a very dark tone compared to the more catchy bedroom lo-fi vibes that were present on Young Friday . Schmale looks to the past for his inspiration, whether it be cinema or pictures of historical figures. In his words: "Each haunting melody elicits ghosts past, fading memories, and memories that were never our own." This album, appropriately, is in honor of Rosalind, the woman featured in the album cover, and [...]

Got some nice ones on the new releases list this week. Here are a handful that popped up on our radar; A Place To Bury Strangers; Onwards To The Wall EP A Place To Bury Strangers; Onwards To The Wall Royal Baths; Better Luck Next Life Royal Baths; Faster, Harder Sharon Van Etten; Tramp [...]

This isn't super music related, except for the fact that I'll post three ghost-related tracks at the bottom of this intriguing nugget of visual creepiness. While in NYC, the girlfriend and I hopped on the subway over to Chelsea to check out the High Line on the west side. It's a gorgeous park, really, with plant-lined walkways above the street (on an old abandoned, elevated train track in the meat packing district). We absolutely loved the leisurely stroll we took that day. I snapped lots of photographs on the old iPhone that afternoon. I also [...]

At the age of 21 Santa Rosa's Ryan Thomas Schmale (aka That Ghost ) has already released five albums. His fifth album, Songs Out Here , was recently released by twosyllable records . Schmale's music is clearly influenced by sights and sound of Northern California, and the result is a sound that is wash out, dreamy, and a perfect summer listen. Portions of Songs Out Here were written on the grounds of acclaimed author Jack London's estate in Sonoma County. [...]
Back in February I posted on one of my favorite albums of the year so far, That Ghost's Songs Out Here. Today I have the privilege to premiere the video for the powerful "Won't I... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

Tweet One of those magical times of your life is when you are no longer a teenager. The moment you open your eyes on the morning of your 20th birthday and realise that from this day forward you are officially classified as an "adult". What did you do when that alarm clock went off? Did you lay there and contemplate life's mysteries? Did you go to the mall and spend all day hanging around your favourite shops? Did you think about releasing your 5th album? You [...]
That Ghost is the indie-rock project of San Francisco Bay musician Ryan Schmale. While That Ghost is a full, four-piece band when performing live, Schmale writes, records and plays all of the instruments when recording. New single "Tried To Like You"—off Schmale's fifth album (the majority of which was recorded in his bedroom), Songs Out [...]

To Like You The new album from That Ghost, Songs Out Here, released this week. This is the first I'm hearing single, To Like You and I'm kind of loving it. I am really digging the retro, lo-fi, reverby sound. To catch you and me up to speed, That Ghost is the project of 21-year-old frontman Ryan Thomas Schmale. The northern California native holes himself up in his bedroom with a few guitars and a recording box. The result is a poignant lofi recording that sounds extremely personal and very likable. You can catch [...]

Tweet Here's a look at four Bay Area bands and artists who all released new records this week. While he's well known as a studio wizard, what struck me most in recently seeing Papercuts perform was that Jason Quever can also write a hell of a pop song. His first album on Sub Pop is the brand new Fading Parade . Papercuts - "Do You Really Wanna Know" [...]
This week's Best New Releases is interesting in that there is no release from an A-list 'indie' artist, if you will, but instead an eclectic gaggle of mostly new and relatively unknown artists, like That Ghost, Davila 666, Papercuts, Dum Dum Girls, DeVotchka, Raised by Tigers, and many others. Perhaps the biggest new release is [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

After catching lead single "To Like You" a few months back, I was thrilled to hear That Ghost's second full length, hoping it would mostly consist of the sedated Peter Hayes vibe that "To Like You" offered. Released March 1st on twosyllable records, Songs Out Here isn't exactly what I was anticipating, but the hushed collection of faint folk tracks is an alluring set. Ryan Thomas Schmale, who's been cranking out That Ghost tunes since 2008, hasn't sounded this focused in his young but prodigious career. Highlights: "To [...]

Never let it be said that Ryan Thomas Schmale isn't a generous fellow. Not only has he given us two songs from his album, 'Songs Out Here', but he's also streaming the whole thing over at twosyllable records . From what we've heard so far it sounds a bit vintage 50s and 60s influenced pop with a lo-fi flavour. Like a under produced Jay Jay Pistolet, or a muffled She and Him, without the She. Listen to the tracks here: 'To Like You' ; 'Calls'
