That Noise has been cultivating its radio-ready roar since 2007, with its principals, vocals Jawnee Burkes and guitarist Jay Skinner working around other projects while trying to tap into fans of bands like Nine Inch Nails and Muse. Their tense, densely layered alt-rock is neither as glossy nor dancefloor-ready as many bands who use synths and guitars as the brick and mortar in their wall of sound. But That Noise's new EP "Love Remains" — produced by Max Dingle (who has worked on records my the likes of White Lies, Glasvegas, Neon Neon and Goldfrapp) — does have a [...]

Last week I posted three cover songs by L.A. artists , and the wave continues: On his forthcoming "Covers" EP (due Oct. 6 on Vanguard), SoCal singer-songwriter Greg Laswell covers Kristin Hersh's "Your Ghost," the gorgeous spectre of a song that led off her "Hips and Makers" album some 15 long years ago. Now, I like Laswell and featured him in my Times column a couple years ago, but ... well, on the vast musical ocean of Buzz Bands, Ms. Hersh fairly walks on water. "Your Ghost" [...]
Jay & Jawnee birthed That Noise in the heart of Los Angeles in 2007. Originally Jay had started composing original songs under the name Appogee, which soon came to be known as Unconscious Ruckus. Kanpai Records soon picked up the album and released it Spring 2005. It was at this point Jay hooked up with Jawnee Burx. The duo played consistently throughout Southern California, at CMJ & SXSW as well as touring the rest of the US. Soon after, early demos of the new album caught the ear of producer Sylvia [...]
