It´s Wild Weekend #35, which means another delicious cocktail of cool tunes from all around the globe. Northern Ireland, Jamaica, Persia by way of the Motor City, Jerez de la Frontera... Just have another wild one. I know I will. After the demise of the Northern Ireland´s finest punkpoppers the Undertones, most of their personnel ended up in a fine band called That Petrol Emotion. One Steve Mack, an American who worked in a London pizza parlour at the time, was drafted as a singer. The triumphant Big Decision was arguably their [...]
Another excursion through the back pages of rock, pop and experimental music to unearth some under-appreciated artists and albums. A squeamish mix of the relentlessly obscure, the modestly under-listened and the arguably best left forgotten… That Petrol Emotion What came after shoegaze and before grunge and britpop? Um… a baggy void in the British indie scene quickly filled by dance cross-over acts into which many perfectly acceptable indie bands disappeared without trace? [...]
For much of the day on Sunday, Oxegen's main stages resemble the playlist from a local radio station - Calvin Harris, Lady Gaga, Paul Nutini, Katy Perry - so thank heavens for THE TINGS TINGS , the band who make sense of pop music in these challenging circumstances. Having suffered something of a nightmare at T In The Park the day before, the smooth running of their Irish experience has obviously lifted their spirits. Another of the bands to work their way through the festival ranks, last year The Ting Tings took many surprise with their storming Green Room [...]
Tonight, we're at the Rescue Rooms for a bit of a special occasion, the reunion tour of That Petrol Emotion. Guitarist Raymond Gorman posted on the band's forum the question 'What if you announced a tour after 15 years and nobody came?' A good point. My partner and I are ticket numbers four and five, which I suppose is better than when it was originally announced but then cancelled last year, when we were numbers one and two. Not that we're keen or anything. I know a couple of mates of ours who are going but it's a real possibility [...]
[A summary of my Thursday at the South by Southwest Music Festival, which, unfortunately, did not include any secret shows, one-offs or autograph sessions by the Stone Roses :] Highlights: Witnessing Grizzly Bear perform in a church, Iron Works Barbecue, finding out Britt Daniel was as enthused about That Petrol Emotion as I was; stopping to take a deep breath on 6th [photo] before it turned into a churning ocean of humanity, pizza plates and discarded, overdesigned flyers. Lowlights: Feeling as [...]
[A recap of my Wednesday at the South by Southwest Music Festival:] Highlights: That Petrol Emotion , the Drones , Yelle . Lowlights: Bands with their own energy drinks, "F*ck Y'All" T-shirts and caps, the dude who hit me up for a dollar for beer four different times. That Petrol Emotion , playing South by Southwest? That was my reaction upon hearing that one of my favorite Britpop bands from the late '80s/early '90s was playing a venue called the Dog & Duck Pub north of downtown Austin. My long California freeway commutes in the early 1990s were mitigated by my treasured cassette of the album "Chemicrazy," may that hunk of plastic rest in peace. And while I am not at SXSW to engage in nostalgia, the dinnertime set conflicted with nothing else, so why not? The five-piece, playing their first [...]
When it comes to St. Patrick's Day, I like to put together a mix that's not just relevant to the celebration, but something one can listen to all year long. On that note, here's this year's mix, music from Ireland's best Pop bands of the last quarter century. Hopefully, you'll enjoy it more than the hangover you're going to suffer through the following day. Them: Here Comes The Night ( wiki ) Thin Lizzy: Bad Reputation ( wiki ) The Undertones: [...]
ANDREW WEATHERALL DELIVERS 2 EXCLUSIVE DJ MIXES Andrew Weatherall gave us these two exclusive DJ mixes as a gift, k? There are for you only! We will throw the most insane party on February 12th in Berlin at Tresor Club - where it ALL started! to me this is important as Andrew's mix of guitar music and beats back then in the early 90ties created RAVE in Manchester. Who knows where we all would have been without his mixes for Primal Scream, Happy Mondays, That Petrol Emotion, Jah Wobble, James, The Grid, New [...]
When I finished this one I thought it was the weirdest, most disjointed yet with obscure synthpop, Northern Soul, reggae, '90s indie rock, new Fugiya & Miyagi and one of the weirdest records of the year. (Wild Beasts.) It's also got my first-ever attempt at ripping vinyl -- The Gist's "This is Love" -- which I've also included here as a separate download because I figured somebody might want it on it's own and it's never been released on CD (or digitally). But after walking around with it on headphones, I declare it a success. Hope you like it. We've [...]

That Petrol Emotion for the Academy
Veteran northern rockers That Petrol Emotion are set to play the Academy on December 6th. The band first came to prominence in the mid-1980s with the release of their debut album, Manic Pop Thrill . Further success followed with the critically-acclaimed Babble before the group disbanded in 1994 following the release of their fifth LP, Fireproof . Now, after their eagerly-anticipated comeback performance at this year's Oxegen festival, the Derry quintet have decided to hit the road once again. Tickets for the Academy date are available now from Ticketmaster outlets nationwide, priced at €25 including booking fee. [...]

That Petrol Emotion
In the annals of music, there are countless bands that in their heyday were criminally under-rated. Bands that did everything right who failed to bag the kind of acclaim they really deserved. The reasons for their under-championing are as broad as they are inexplicable: from being innovative or ahead of your time (Devo), falling between the stools of several genres (various '80s bands) or extricating yourself from what other bands around you was doing at the time (American Music Club). Some of this rationale applies to That Petrol Emotion , who sprang from the ashes of [...]
Top 5 comebacks
Oxegen week is finally upon us and to celebrate, State will be previewing the festival over the next five days. We'll be bringing your our pick of the bands on offer, interviews and a look back at the glory days of Oxegen's forerunner, Feile. To start off with here's our guide to those familiar names who are coming back to what they know this weekend.... 1. BLUR - Main Stage, Friday Until last Sunday, the idea of BLUR as one of Oxegen's headliners seemed quaint at best. However, such was the [...]

SxSW (Day 1)
Images: KaiserCartel @ ThreadgillsJessica Lea Mayfield @ The ParishPort O'Brien @ Buffalo BilliardsSo our first day has been and gone, and it was a bit of a blur to be honest. Once we had organised our travel to and from downtown, eaten, avoided the man walking round Sixth St naked from the waist down (apart from a fluffy pink bunny tail), and found our way to our first day party it was
