If Chicago outfit Bare Mutants is a Frankensteinian monster stitched together with various former members of other local indie rock acts, then lead singer and guitarist Jered Gummere (formerly of the Ponys) is Dr. Frankenstein himself, using his drawling vocals to tie together the band that caters to its disparate members' individual strengths—no more, no less. In "Without You," just dropped on the A-side of the band's debut 7" from HoZac Records, the slow, driving drumbeat, swelling, constant organ in the background, and distorted guitar mesh together, giving the track a [...]
Jangly rock supergroup Bare Mutants made their Coach House Sounds debut this week with a sweet set full of 60s pop-inspired rock'n'roll. Bare Mutants are not just a group that are super, but a band of well-known Chicago misfits containing former Ponys' frontman Jered Gummere on guitar and vocals, Mannequin Men's Seth Bohn on bass, Derek Nelson & the Musicians' Pete Falknor on drums, The 1900s' Jeanine O'Toole on vocals and percussion, and newcomer Leslie Deckard on organ. Check out the quintet messing around with CHS in the 16-minute clip below. You [...]

It's such a great weekend for festivals in Chicago. We've got Taste of Randolph occupying the West Loop with the salivating sounds of British rockers The Heavy and Swervedriver as well as local rockers JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound and The 1900s . Not to mention the three-day birthday bash going on at Saki featuring Great Society Mind Destroyers and much, much more. With so much rock happening there's really no need to wait. Let's get on with the show! [...]

1900s | photo by Chris Zakorchemny If there is one single thing we all look forward to every week, it's the weekend. It doesn't matter that it's going to rain or that there could probably be thunderstorms. This is the Midwest, damn it. We don't care what the weather's like, we do what we want. So it's our pleasure to bring to you those shows that light up every weekend no matter how fog-filled the sky is, no matter how snow-covered the ground is or how smoky your house may be (don't ask). One of the bands that was on a lot of people's lips this last week was Mazes , and now that I've done my research here, I'm a little bummed I missed the group. They're preparing for the release of their new album, A Thousand Heys , which will hit stores on April 11th. Giving the record a listen, it sounds a lot like Wavves , if you actually put the band in the studio to give the record a little production value, something I think is a good [...]
"Lions Fur" comes to us via Return of the Century , the recently-released second album from revamped Chicago sextet The 1900 's. Hovering around the art/pop junction of the sleak and swanky (from Fleetwood Mac to Belle and Sebastian) and the more direct indie alt/pop craft of the new millennium, The 1900's, despite their name, belong more to a particular mindset than specific time. "Lions Fur" is an infectious confection of a song, an unpredictable beat and bassline laying the foundation for chiming guitars, a snaking melody and some killer harmonies. [...]

Seeing how our staff has distinct tastes and opinions on music, it would be nearly impossible for us to determine a 10 Albums of 2010 list as a single entity without excessive bloodshed. Therefore over the past two weeks, we've been posting multiple Top 10 Albums of 2010 lists as determined by Loud Loop Press editors and contributors. Today, Loud Loop founder and editor-in-chief Richard Giraldi finally decides to get with the program and reveals his list for Top 10 Albums of 2010. 10. [...]
[ download ] [tweetmeme] As 2010 begins to wind down, music writers begin to turn their collective attention to year end lists and best of features, trying to make sense of twelve months' worth of new music and take stock of the cream of the crop. One record which deserves to be on everyone's "Best Albums" rankings-but which will likely get overlooked more often than not-is The 1900s Return of the Century , the latest (and greatest) collection of the Chicago band's winsome, 1970s inspired indie-pop released by Parasol Records . [...]
What do you think of when you hear the word "gentle"? The tenderness of a lover? The sensation of a cool breeze? The ballad of small ocean ripples cascading upon the side of a drifting schooner? Gentleness is a kind, nurturing word, and all too seldom these days do we really stop and absorb that sort of thing. Music has a way of reminding people that the senses are connected - we can set ourselves a course into love with She & Him, we can sweat to Hot Chip, we can sail on an Eric Clapton blues arrangement, [...]
Recently honored on the Chicago Tribune Top 2010 albums from Chicago indies list, vocalist Jeanine O'Toole of the 1900s checks in with her favorite musical memories from the past year.

Tyler Jon Tyler If there IS a reasons to trudge out in the frigid white stuff, it is indeed to see some great local live music. In this edition of Weekend Diversions, we talk Tyler Jon Tyler and The 1900s at the Empty Bottle , David Singer And The Sweet Science at The Hideout , In Tall Buildings at the The Whistler and much more. Let's get to it, shall we? [...]

Garage poppers Tyler Jon Tyler prove even minimalist rock has enough power to knock your socks off. The Chicago trio utilize short, jangly pop-rock tracks to get in and get out before the listener knows what hit them. Clocking in at 26:19, none of the 12 tracks on Tyler Jon Tyler are over three minutes long. Bouncy album opener "Tick Tock Tick" is the band's mission statement. Drummer Tom Cassling starts it off right with rumbling caveman-esque drum beats while a simple, slow and steady [...]

3 new bands that will get stuck in your head........

Late autumn is a time for wearing sweaters, drinking hot drinks, and snuggling up with someone you someone you love (or at least, someone you like more than a friend). What better way to kick off that process than listening to soothing, catchy, indie twee pop? The 1900's are just that kind of band. Hailing from Chicago, this once-septet/currently-quintet makes gently sweet and precious pop music that's drawn comparisons to Fleetwood Mac, Belle and Sebastian, Vampire Weekend, and early Velvet Underground. Over the course of their new sophomore record, Return of the Century, the 1900s [...]

As much as you try to stay on top of everything, some things just seem to slip by you without any notice. I'm sorry to say but The 1900s latest album Return of the Century, released Nov. 2nd , falls into that 'under the radar' category for me. Their new album certainly sounds different than their previous album Cold and Kind (a favorite record here at the WiAC office) but we all know that isn't always a bad thing. The new album feels slightly more...toned down. Return of [...]
